Behind the curve. It was first mentioned just days after the station flipped to Jack.

If there is news in this statement, it may be the hint that
the original `JMK personalities will not be heard until
both the webstream and the HD Sub-Carrier are both in
operation. That delays the return of Brown, Winston and
Biondi until the end of July?

WJMK oldies jocks

boy, good luck hearing them- all the HD talk is great but it will take years and years and YEARS for enough people to have the receivers to make any real difference.

Almost makes you wonder if INF. kept all these jocks under
contract just so they couldn`t jump to a new "oldies"
station if anyone makes the move? As of today, it`s now
one month since Winston and Biondi have been on-the-air.

Who would do oldies on a city grade stick? I don't see CC making any changes to their stations, especially when they have FM 4 stations in the top 10, and if Kiss FM gets dropped, they're more likely to try something other than oldies, and I don't see their oldies station on the AM to be tweaked anytime soon, should CC decide to keep it the way it is now. Bonneville isn't going to try it since The Drive is doing well for them, and the Drive may pick up some of the oldies listeners since it's the closest thing to oldies and gain a few points in the ratings. WTMX is also doing well for them, and bills the most for the cluster, so that's out of the question. WILV is doing well for now, but with format flips common on that station, who knows, but Bonneville may have found something that'll work for once, especially with WLIT sounding more like a Hot AC station trying to compete with sister station WTMX. I also don't see ABC taking over the oldies format. I just don't see any city grade station picking up the format. If it does become available again in the Chicago market, it'll be on a weak suburban stick, and for now, I don't see the Nine-FM trimulcast picking it up.

As Robert Feder told us on June 7th, Oldies 104.3 was the
#11 station in the 12+ Arbitrons with a cumulative weekly
audience of 722, 200. Oldies was also among this market`s
15 highest billing stations, with revenue in excess of
16.5 Million dollars.

Here`s my three scenarios for possible Oldies in the next
six months.

#1--WCKG, after 01/06. Concurrent with the departure of
Howard Stern from terrestrial radio, Oldies 105.9
premieres. What makes this theory so compelling is the
fact that Infinity has retained the entire Oldies
airstaff, ostensibly for a simulcast and HD Radio
broadcast that will be a fraction of that cherished
722,200 figure for weekly audience.

#2--9-FM trimulcast. After valiantly trying to fight
off the major-market 104.3 JACK-FM, 9-FM throws in
the towel and Harvey Wells decides to go full-tilt
oldies. We already know NewsWeb Radio Group has the
oldies library to pull it off from the interim
programming that was implemented on AM850 while
waiting for Air America Radio to begin.

#3--ABC Radio division sells out and the 94.7
frequency becomes available to a new conglomerate.
The current stance of WZZN as "America`s hardest
rock station" seems to shedding more listeners
every month and perhaps oldies will be seen as a
liferaft. I rate this one as option #3 because it`s
the least likely to occur, but it`s also not
impossible.

In the final analysis, dave73 may be right and
oldies may never return to the FM dial in
Chicago, but there are still a few options
left, far-fetched as they may seem.

Correction to option #1, it should read:
"ostensibly for a webstream and HD Radio
broadcast that will be a fraction of that
cherished 722,200 figure for weekly
audience.."

Yes I have mentioned that elsewhere, you are right. Longer they keep them, the momentum drops for another Chicago signal to take the format on. They are securing no one does it so their stream and HD@ will have better chances (yeah right).

But, these jocks also had good contracts negotiated unlike their NYC counterparts. SCENARIO: INF will eventually buy out the contracts or if the jocks really want to get out bad, at a reduced price.
______________

Re: WJMK oldies jocks

Dave,

Let me make it simple on you.

If 100.3 had not flipped so near to today, they would be Oldies in a heartbeat, especially if they could secure the WJMK airstaff. WHY? Cross selling them with WDRV would lock up a big portion of the upper 25-54 demo and allow them to share listeners.

WZZN is also prime for a flip, that is, if ABC changes mood again on their format, as when the wind shifts so does their direction.
______________
