WJTN Jamestown schedule change

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I bleieve this means there are now three "oldies" stations in the Jamestown market. WKSN, WDOE, and WRRN. Though I don't know if WRRN counts as a "Jamestown" station. Their signal can certainly be heard up there just fine."

Jake. WDOE is the newstalk station owned by the Radio Group in Dunkirk, NY. And who is WRRN? I can't find them in radiostationworld.

"Sadly, I'm guessing all three of the above stations are running satellite feeds most, if not all day. Can someone tell me which station is carrying which oldies feed? I'm just curious."

WDOE is now owned by the Finger Lakes News Network. When I drove through there over Memorial Day weekend they were still doing an Oldies format. Has that changed? Has WDOE got a new format?

So I'm curious, does anyone know why exactly the Hall Closet show was cancelled on WJTN? I like Ed Schultz, and I know he had been a nightly fixture over on WKSN, but was he popular enough to be moved to the mothership?

Okay folks, here's the real reason why Ray Hall's show on WJTN was cancelled by Media One Group (and I apologize for the long delay):

As I had referenced earlier on this thread, there was a regular caller to that show, "Michael," who was kicked off the air for making defamatory remarks about two community leaders -- Chautauqua County Sheriff Joe Gerace and Post-Journal Editor Cristie Herbst. Ray's only condition for allowing him back on the air was to apologize to those two people on the air. He never did.

In May of last year, Ray broke a story about the Jamestown Police Department paying $90,000 to settle a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by a city councilwoman. That story included Ray quoting from a legal document -- which contained the F- and C-words. Unfortunately, those words were not censored. A couple of weeks later, "Michael" made a threat to local management and the Media One corporate office. He threatened to file a complaint with the FCC about Ray's use of profane language if he wasn't let back on the air without condition. This threat led Media One to cancel the Hall Closet, effective June 20, 2008.

Many people I've talked to in the Jamestown area believe the cancellation of Ray Hall's show was a big conspiracy involving city government, city police, and the BPU, all of whom had reason to despise Ray. But the fact is that there is no conspiracy. Media One management probably decided to cancel the show because that would be in their best interest to maintain WJTN's license.

But what really disturbs me is that a former caller to the Hall Closet would resort to committing blackmail -- a federal crime -- because he was pissed off about not being allowed back on the air unless he apologized to the people he libeled. By the way, I also found out this guy's information. Strangely enough, his real name is John Smith (weird, huh?), and he lives at 285 Hazeltine Avenue in Jamestown.

Talk radio in small town USA. Ray Hall should have known better than to use the "f" and "c" words on the air. It's inexcusable. As to the caller who was banned, a total shmuck. He had a leg to stand on until he used the threat "unless I'm allowed back on the air." He gets the talk radio death penalty: banned for life. Actually, the more cruel thing to do would be allow him to call, put him on, let him ramble, give him his 38 seconds of fame, remain silent. Ivariably, these types of serial callers ask "Are you there? Am I on?" because they expect the host and listeners to hang on their every word they say. Feh! Ignore him and let him make a total ass of himself. If it was Shredd and Ragan taking the guy's call, they'd probably play farts and toilet flushing sound effects under him, hang up and move on. And Media One? Just keepin' their assets covered and doing what they have to do to hold onto the license... although it would have been interesting had they brought the nutjob caller's talk show extortion threats to the attention of the FCC. Not that the FCC would have cared.

You're right, the FCC doesn't care about extortion threats. That's not under their jurisdiction. Blackmail/extortion would be a matter for the FBI.

Having worked at WKSN from 1979-1981 as a young pup, experienced a little sadness last week while in Jamestown on business. Ventured over to Front St. to see an empty lot where the once mighty Trend Broadcast Center once stood. For a 19-20 year old kid in radio back in 79 in that building was about as professional in radio as it got vs. some of the broom closet studio and tiny stations I had worked in out of high school.

I had heard in recent years the building was a mess with roof problems etc. after WKSN/WHUG moved to Orchard Rd to join WJTN/SE-93.

Nonetheless, RIP Trend Broadcast Center.
