WKCE now on 98.3 in Maryville

Why would you think that? Since you mentioned it, I took a look at the playlist of WFAT on their website and it does look a lot like what WKCE plays: '50s, '60s, and an old country song here and there.

Edit: After listing online to both stations, the same songs are being played, with different IDs and liners but same voice guy.

Do we have common ownership here or the same hobbyist programming both? Why in the world would you run that unrecognizable classic Country in Massachusets of all places? I can understand the thinking in Knoxville (even if I disagree with it).
 
I heard the 97.1 translator in Campbell County (on I-75) today. It was strong and clear from the Caryville exit into Knoxville. Surely it is not on the Seymour tower, as someone guessed. Must be on a taller tower, or mountaintop, to reach out like it does. That would explain how it interfered with 98.3 in Sweetwater when it was on that frequency. The tower location must have caused it to overpower WMTY. Anyway, it sounds good now, even if the format is unusual.

Could this be the beginning of a "Mid-Century" format? I know, no money. AFAIK WKCE has one current advertiser and has had only one other for the past couple of months. Other than the occasional Blues song, I have come to like their music mix though and heard some oldies that I haven't heard since MOR stations went off the air.
 
I hate to hear that you have only heard two advertisers and only one currently. That does not sound good.

On the other hand, I have seen some AM stations, especially in southern states going for about $10,000 to $30,000. Typically that included a transmitter site in decent condition (usually leased and lease rates were really cheap). My point is somebody can buy such a station and not need a bunch of cash every month to run the station. I've never seen such a station mooing loudly as a cash cow. There's a couple of such stations I know of that have no commercials normally and make all their money selling time on Sundays and maybe a Saturday program or two.
 
Yes, the old 1230 AM there had the calls and Harry Morgan later moved the calls to Knoxville when the Harriman Station went dark. If I'm not mistaken, Ken Crosswaith originally had the calls in Harriman, I believe they had something to do with his initials.
