WKHL (Kool 96.7) is now THE COAST!

It was reported on another reputable radio board that Kool 96.7 an oldies station out of Stamford, is now running totally jockless with a format change. The change happened at 10PM tonight (March 29th) and is now known as "The Coast"

Upon tuning in as the change happened 20 minutes ago from this posting, the station is now known as "96.7 - The Coast" and appears to be adult contemporary in format. I heard Madonna "Get Into The Groove" followed by Earth Wind & Fire's "Brick House" and Sheryl Crow's "All I Wanna Do"....now they are playing Kool & The Gang's "Celebration".

How well does WEBE-FM 107.9 ("WE-BE 108") come in for that part of Fairfield County? Kinda sounds like them.<P ID="signature">______________

Sounds very AC to me after just having it on for a half an hour. But this might have some affect on sister station Star 99.9 which is AC but they don't sound that much the same as Coast's music mix is much different. Just a couple songs that they both do play such as the song they just played, Hero by Enrique Iglesias. The format sounds good.

WEBE does well there IIRC. I do like this new format, and since they do live together with Star, I don't anticipate the yawn factor from new AC music. Hopefully we'll hear more Madonna / Eagles / Bee Gees / Journey / Chicago / B-52's than Enrique Inglesias.

Yep, an AC/female version of Jack. Favorable comparisons with that disaster at 101.1 in the City aside, was this a wise move by Cox?

So, soccer moms in Fairfield County have Star, WEBE108 and now The Coast to call their own. After all, there's A LOT of overlap. What about males - or a demo mix?

What dull and uninspired programming...

Women between 25 and 54 are by far the most desired demographic in advertising.

As a result, more and more stations have changed formats to position themselves to get a piece of the large pie of revenue from advertisers looking to reach soccer moms.

That's why so many stations chase women between 25 and 54 and more stations are doing so. That's the demographic where the money is.

I understand that, but now 3 stations in the Fairfield County local market are going after the exact same group: Star, WEBE and "Coast". From a listener's perspective, it does nothing to diversify the choices on the dial. From an owner's perspective, you run the risk of cannabalizing co-owned Star.

And, this music mix includes nothing that isn't already available in the area. Look for ratings to drop, as they did with CBS-FM. The reason (in this case): slicing the same pie into too-thin pieces.

The problwm is that Star is boring and very currents based. Coast, so far, sounds like the proper evolution of Oldies with many hits from the 70's and some 60's thrown in that Star doesn't touch.
