WKLU Flips to Oldies

Was just informed by WKLU employees that the station will flip to Oldies at midnight. Several WKLU Jocks are headed out the door.

WKLU finally becomes irrelevant! Way to KILL a format with great potential Russ!

At least you can no longer call YOURSELF a 'player' in Indy's radio market.

(FOR THE RECORD: The 'ho's prediction of changes to OLDIES for WKLU - was RIGHT ON! (have to credit my Ft Wayne source on that one).
The prediction of complete sale of the station is still out there - not over yet.)

Another STRONG example of why if the gov't is going to decide whom can own a license, then it should be the same as running for local office - you should have to LIVE here to own a radio station. That's the only way to hold owners accountable for 'stealing' community radio stations to head for the big city and advertisers. Radio is not like other businesses where anyone with the knowledge can compete, therefore, if you're going to regulate it, it SHOULD be looking out for local communities FIRST - greedy owners second.

How long have they been doing continuous Top 10 lists? They kick off each hour at about 15 after, so the TOHID is late, or the web stream is on tape delay lol. The portable zoo list was dorky.

They already had Oldies on HD2...shouldn't be much of an effort to pot up HD2 on the main channel...

Well, it just happened. "The Greatest Hits of the 60's and 70's, Oldies 101.9." It was pretty weird; they aired a promo to send your top-10 to Crystal and then immediately flipped. "Midnight Confession" is the first song.

Any word on what jocks were staying, going, and/or relocating to Fort Wayne?

Also, can anyone confirm Danno as the new Program Director? If so, and he does switch to an alternative rock format to compete with X103 like some on here are guessing, I'd say BRING IT ON!

I really think some competition to X103 (maybe with more 90's rock thrown in?) could breathe some life into this.

Of course, that's just my opinion. ;D

What a damn shame. They played the closest thing to "my" music and they were reasonably fun to listen to.

OMG!! What a sad day in radio history! I've been a faithful and dedicated listener to WKLU for almost 10 years. My favorite station in the Indy area. I know one of the jocks, he's been a great friend for a long time. This is truly a sad day for me. Where am I gonna go for great music now? "Big Daddy" Russ has really disappointed me this time! Sure hope my buddy isn't one of them to be headed out the door, though. Here it is just before Christmas, what a hell of a time to get the axe. :( :(

Ughhh ... I am reasonable disappointed by this change.

Russ - you and I have spoken a few times (from your hot line) I don't think this format will improve anything. This is likely to be too crusty for the narrow demo (44-57) you are (were) looking for a couple years back. I just don't get why you couldn't have stayed with the 30-50 set that allowed for more 80s and 90s. Moving the library backward rather than forward is a mistake in this nobody's opinion.

Also, in my opinion I think that taking out X/Z/Q with a WEBN type format with 3 stops an hour would have been the better thing to do.

Good luck in any case,
-Jon (a former KLU listener)

Oldies is still a good sales format. Plus, it's a great PPM format - doing very well as the audience actually gets younger with electronic measurement.

While Indy is still a few years away from electronic measurement, this is still a decent long term play for Russ.

Seems to me people on here who are upset are thinking with their personal tastes in mind, rather than sound business thinking.

Their audio is fantastic for an oldies station. Rumor has it they just hired Jeff Goode from Cumulus as Chief Engineer. Jeff was the engineer for the number one station in town for the last 10 years. Jeff has one of the best ears in town. He had unbelievable audio on the oldies station when they were doing that on North Shadeland. It took him about 2 hours to make this thing sound great. The cuts almost sound like they've been digitally remastered. Good stereo seperation and super clean! The DJ mic cuts thru the music too. The audio was only so-so when it was classic rock. Don't know what thy're running over there. Seemed to change about every three days....

Brickyard400 - I mean LIBBY or RUSS - don't be SO OBVIOUS. Thought you would have learned your lesson to let the station speak for itself. You are OLDIES now - take your backseat quietly please. Let the MUSIC do the talking.

Who ELSE would know it took '2 hours to make this thing sound great'???? At least don't be so obvious.

Please, this time - LET THE MUSIC DO THE TALKING!

I have to put my 2 cents worth in .

I was a listener of wklu from day one , or so, in 1999 when the star had an article on its underground sound. I loved it from the start.

when I read in nuvo that it was sold ,I knew it would be the end of a great era.

when I heard wklu on the first day of russ taking over, the sound was so inferior to when quinn ran it.

unforuntaly the rest of the stations were not worth listening to so in spite of what I felt about it I stil listened to it.I heard wklu get better and at least occasionally play some of the album tracks(called deep cuts)the old wklu played.

now it is an hits of the 60`s and 70`s oldie station. another russ oasis letdown.

I thought they would at least re-image with a new voice guy/gal and maybe new calls, too.

Sounds like the same station.

This was a good move. There were 4 stations in Indy that played some hybrid of Classic Rock. It is stunning to me that nobody jumped on Oldies before this. It always ranks well in the ratings. It always bills well when done right. I still don't know why Emmis dumped WKLR and why Susquehana dropped Gold.......both bad moves in hindsight. If I were WKLU.... I would change the calls though....completely re-brand the station.

I am looking forward to hearing more Looking Glass, Lobo, Dave Loggins, Gilbert O'Sullivan and Every Mother's Son on Indy airwaves soon.
