WKLU Flips to Oldies

Wow! Folks are STILL doing the "I know it's you!" type postings? That's what chased me off of here many months ago.

Personally, I feel if you are trying to "out" someone on here and identify them by name, your post should immediately be deleted since it has no relevance to the topic (unless it's a "Here's Where You Go to Try and Out Someone" thread).
It also jeopardizes the credibility of the site and it's ability to maintain and guarantee your anonymity.

Always was lame. Still lame. :-\

By the way, I LOVE the new TV commercials for 101.9. At least their putting it out there in a semi-compelling way, right?
Financially, oldies is always a solid idea, isn't it? You can immediately go to all the car dealers, funeral homes and supermarkets and tout your station as the only one that caters to a certain demo that the others don't.
Love or hate hearing "Pretty Woman" every other day, it's a quick revenue-generator. :)

Right. That's why the void was there for Russ to slip his Oldies format in. No one wanted to hassle with all that revenue from playing an Oldies format, they didn't think their salespeople could handle it, so they all just stayed away.

But RUSS was the only one to see all that car dealer, funeral home and supermarket(?) money there for the taking. They don't even have to have a sales staff with this (new?) oldies format, the line of car dealers is already forming outside the WKLU offices as they try to throw their money at Russ and reserve their ad time.

That's why Russ is the Radio King in Indy (still just the Bumper Sticker King in Fort Wayne, but give him time!)

The guys at the Lafayette cluster on McCarty Lane could sure learn a lot from Russ. Has
he thought about buying stations here?

Lafayette has already had a taste of Bruce The Radio Pirate. Russ Oasis The Radio Rebel

would be refreshing. I'd love to see it. He should buy some stations here!

I love Oldies 101.9. Great Audio and well presented!

It doesn't take a mental super giant to realize there was an Oldies void in this city. Say what you want about Russ, he is not stupid. He is a strong business man. He will pull a 3 share with little problem and make money doing it.

I'm just surprised he gave up on the format so easily. For 2 years I was told how people would listen to personalities and live jocks over a computer. Then once they over take him he flips the format. I think the lesson that should be learned from WKLU is that people want personality radio. WKLU's highest ratings were when they had two mega personalities (Ritz and Baker) dominating their afternoon and night shifts. They were over a 5 at one point. Fire them, and the ratings fall. If you can't or won't give listeners people that are compelling to listen to, then don't give them anything at all. Put it on auto and let it roll.

As they show their expensive jocks the door, keep kissing up and you may be asked back Kendall!

I think the lesson learned is people were 'curious' what kind of 'personality' radio WKLU was bragging about. When they tuned in and gave him up to a 5, the listeners realized it was the same re-tread tunes, with the same, bland, boring liners and NO personality allowed to be conveyed by the jocks. You either need STRONG personalities, or you might as well hit the auto-play.

What was your highest rating at the time Kendall? I'm sure there had to be SOMEBODY listening during that 2a-6a shift!

Supermarkets: Marsh, Pay Less, Kroger, Meijer, etc. Was that like calling a refridgerator and "ice box"? Sorry!

What killed 101.9?
Bad leadership (G.M. but ultimately Ownership)
Bad sales results (G.M. and Ownership)
All the testosterone left the format (PD and since Ownership kept his fingers in it, his fault too)
Talent pool got watered down (PD, GM, and Ownership)
They lost their attitude and ballsy approach to radio in Central Indiana (same as above)

What's funny is they started by going after Q and JJK is the one that drove the nails.

Oh, and about OLDIES being a solid idea "financially"... :D HA! :D That's a good one! A solid knee slapper (to fit the format)!

This format is merely a prelude to two things:
1. A SOLD sign out front.
2. A Big Format flip (Oldies eases the blow... not as many pissed of listeners or complaint calls)

Actually, I was listening to 101.9 today, and there was music, and DJs, and commercials, and traffic, and weather... I don't think it is dead, yet. And as for the "For Sale" sign out front, how long have people been saying that in here? I think it's still under the same ownership, don't you?

Yes, your right except for one thing.... I'm right, the others were premature. LOL.
But really I think the format flip to be more likely.... When an oldies flips there is less collateral damage than from most other formats.

I listened for a few days and then gave up. They are playing the same songs as the old station just fewer of them. Still the same Gerry Raferty, Ace, and so on. A few new ones thrown in. But very few real oldies. If you are going to be oldies then be oldies. Play the Drifters, Bill Haley, Big Bopper etc. That is what us true oldies fans want. If you arent going to do that just admit you werent creative enough to come up with anything other than changing the format name.
