WKLU GM LEAVING

It appears to me that a General Manager postion is a titular one at this station. Bart is one of the best if not thee best radio sales person in Indy. One of the good guys, with an uncanny amount of integrity, rare for today's biz culture. My bet, he will do just fine.

Integrity and Oasis stations don't really go hand in hand... Well actually, not at all.

And the fact that he IS one of the good guys is what makes me think it really was for the best for his sake.

Again, 'good guys' and Oasis stations, not so much. The less of a soul you have, the better.

Why do these companies including radio stations continually hire old school or dinosaurs with outdated philosophies and ideas and expect different or better results? Why is anybody surprised by their failure.

Mirror reflection of ownership.

Define: "Old School..." or, "dinosaurs with outdated philosophies", please? For Radio, Newspapers, Yellow Pages - even local TV and cable - the changes in the business landscape have been seismic and tranformative. Is "Old School" something that actually worked 3 years ago? 2 years ago? Old dogs are having to learn new tricks....and, young dogs can make more money in other industries.

Look at the big local categories; Automotive - the giants still spend...Wood, Skillman, Mohr - less money and not as deep, lots of others on the sidelines. Financial/Banking - come on! What would you do to create new spending categories out of thin air ? Hard to reinvent your business when there were certain categories you would "always" be able to depend upon....those assumptions have crumbled.

One mid-level TV rep recently told me that 5 of her clients have folded in the past 12 months...she's $120k short on her budget. Another relayed that a major carguy was going to "pass" on him this year....to the tune of $136k. How do you knock on enough doors, send out enough emails and ask for enough referrals to close an attrition gap like that? It is not because they are "old school."

I was one of them for over 20 years...likely a dinosaur... and I do not envy any of them. Good sales people CAN make a difference...but, the earth has truly shifted under their feet.

yeah, we need young hip ideas like radio one

ooops anyone got change for a nickle so I buy two shares

hey young turk.....what dont you go out there and ply your brilliance and make A DIFFERENCE

Dear words2you,
I would not classify jennifer Skjodt as "old school dinosaur!" In fact, she's a very attractive late 30's - early 40's lady, and while Susquehanna was the only company she ever knew, that particular company was [in hindsight] leaps and bounds ahead of most any other broadcaster I'm familiar with, both operational and how their people were treated.
I don't know if this is a long-term "marraige" between her and Russ; in fact I would bet against it. That said she has a lot to offer this station, much more than they've done so far as an "oldies" station. Russ will probably not be smart enough to simply leave her alone for a couple three years [radioho, did you note here I said something negative about Russ?!] because that doesn't seem to be the way he manages his employees - should he somehow figure out she's the real deal and leave her alone, she could put this thing on the map in a big way.

It was not my intention to attack any single person. My point was validated, business as usual and standard operating procedures from even a few years ago are archaic. However you look at it, things are never going to be the same again.

Using a sales example, if a sales person normally sold at a one-to-three ratio, or for every three demos one will be a sale. It's now is one-to-six, yes this is a hard pill to swallow. It means triple the rejection, double the work and if it normally took 50 hours it may take 80, and having skin made of leather. Frankly, that kind of work ethic and initiative is so rare today that many companies will fold because of that alone. If you think its tough today, wait till next year, hyper-inflation and double digit unemployment are on the way. Yes, the World is shifting under our feet and yes I do know what to do and how to cope. The benefit of what is happening today is the strong will survive and the weak will go elsewhere.

Certain principles will always endure, companies have gotten twisted around, focusing on bottom line over customers. That is backward, if it weren't so tragic it would be comical.
My point is companies continue to put into positions people who have all been cut from the same mold. Having a great deal of experience today may even be a liability, and can even work against you. It may be time as Peter Drucker pointed out to smash the system and start all over. The definition of insanity, continue to do the same things over and over and expect different results

Impressive. And the rest of your post was right on as well. It won't last.

Re: words2you: Thank you for the clarification of your "dinosaur" comment. If Jennifer is a dinosaur...that is one smokin' hot T-Rex! The staff at WKLU is so lucky to have her. She's energetic, highly principled, programming-friendly and she could sell you the gravel out of your own driveway. I worked with her for over ten years and can't think of anyone who has a bad word to say about her. That's practically unheard of in this business.
