WKLU Oldies Dies Tomorrow

At 7:00 this morning I heard from Jeff Pigeon that WKLU Oldies will cease to exist on Tuesday. For those of us who enjoyed the music and the positive chatter the station and their personalities will be missed. Whether or not another Indianapolis area station will change to the oldies format is a moot point. I realize from reading the Indiana board that not evry person liked the owner or the format. Some people prefer a religious format over the oldies. Some people/advertisers feel that oldies listeners are too old to fit in their demographics. I for one will go back to listening to my records/tapes/cd's, mp3's and so forth to get my oldies fix. I also have satellite radio in my new car so I can listen to any generation from the 40's through the 90's and today. However, it's not really the same as local live radio. I would like to thank the on air professionals who made the station, at least to me, enjoyable.

Let me see if I can find a proper dirge.

The Bee Gees - Stayin' Alive

That work?

My hats off to the crew...it was good radio that I enjoyed. I've never met Russ Oasis, but the fact that he crafted and/or nurtured a station of this caliber gets him credit in my eyes.

There will be a tribute program Tuesday afternoon at 2:00. The new owners will allow the WKLU on air staff to have a professional send-off.

and then they will drop kick their a$$e$ through the goal post of life. :(

sooner or later someone will pick up the format in Indy, there are a number of stations with duplicate formats, that THIS would be an improvement on their present situation. WARNING! but it has to be done on a station with a good signal, it has to be done with PERSONALITY & FUN, and it has to be there for more than 2 or 3 years. (is anybody HOME over there at "The Track?)

Not surprising. EMF Broadcasting is truly a class act.

WKLU's "format" under Bruce Quinn was, bar none and hands down, my favorite ever on any station anywhere -- even at first when it was, charitably, extremely loose. I liked it because you never, ever knew what would happen next.

I missed Kool 101.9 sorely after Russ bought the station five years ago. But the new WKLU-101.9-1-0-1-point-9 was more in line with my musical tastes than anybody else on the dial, so I kept listening. And I missed that format when it was gone, though not sorely. And while the music on Oldies 101.9 wasn't always a fit for me, I listened anyway because it was about the most fun available on the radio in Indy.

101.9 has been the default choice for me for about 10 years now, but after this afternoon, I'll be "radio homeless." :-(

ps. I sure wish the station's Web site were still up so I could listen today from my office.

I think it's gone ... I just hit the listen live link and heard them shout "Thank You" and the "Thats all Folks" Porky Pig outro. The stream is silent now.

A hats off to the staff for keeping a professional spin on the demise of WKLU...As for the new owner EMF....They already began their brain washing of any listeners who stayed with the dead carrier of about 10 minutes....Religion was the government back in the 1800's. It was never ment to generate a profit or any monies for profit such as EMF, World Church of Tomorrow,Billy Grahm and others who make a field day out of people too dumb to think for themselves...I know personally how the airstaff of WKLU felt when the station was sold...Emf bought the station I worked for...It wasnot fun...At least the air staff had time to prepare a tribute..I didnot...

Did anyone record the last few hours? I started the recording around 8:30AM & left for the day. For some reason, it stopped 6.5 hours in, so I didn't get what I wanted. I was in the building & actually saw the final 10 minutes "live". Everyone was in good spirits...the whole WKLU team were pro's right to the end. Wonder who'll be the next to pick up the format?

And, of course, we invite oldies lovers to check out our internet stations: Radio Bop - "Your Never-Ending Nonstop Sock Hop!" playing the Top 40 from 1955-1965 [RadioBop.com]; Radio Bop 60s - "Boss Radio Is Back!" with classic Drake formatics and the entire Billboard Top 30 from 1960-1969 [RadioBop60s.com]; and ROOTSofROCK.US - "The Music Elvis Grew Up With!" with the Country, R&B and Pop hits from the years 1944-1954.

The 50s/60s terrestrial stations are long gone and now even the 60s/70s are disappearing...sad it is...but we plan to be around for a long time...

"Oldies" on 107.9 anyone? My prediction is baseless, other than the fact that the new Market Manager was the last GM at KLU, and prior to this was the Station Manager at Susquehanna's WGLD while it was successful. Makes you go "hhhmmm..." [at least it makes me go hhmmm....]
