WKNO groundbreaking

Yesterday WKNO broke ground on what will become their new digital TV & radio studios. It is located on land donated by Harrah's Entertainment on Goodlett Farms Pkwy.

There has been some activity at the future WKNO site.

Looks like this week they have started work on clearing the site of trees.

Is WKNO moving both the TV and FM signals to a new tower?

No complaints here....I live right under the current stick and can get WKNO FM out of my TV speakers when it’s turned on.

What other signals are currently on the WKNO tower. I know KIX 106 is, is WXMX?

Would anyone might know what signals are on the small tower beside the KNO tower? Their lights have been out for weeks....

Of course, the WKNO facility has two towers, side by side -- a ~1000' tower, and one about half the height. I have climbed both, a little of the way up -- very easy to climb. I have even walked across the ice bridge, running antenna wire for ham radio Field Day (which scared me way more that climbing the towers).

On top of the lower tower is WKNO-FM. There is also some VHF utility stuff, a couple of ham radio repeaters, and the like.

The higher tower has quite a bit on it. FMs, from the bottom up:

WQOX
WKIM
WRVR
WXMX
WGKX

Also, there is the channel 10 transmitter, and the DTV on channel 29. After transition in February, there will be DTV on 10 & 29 from that tower.

There is also some VHF/UHF stuff, as well as a TV service meant for cell phones, which is a fairly large transmitter. I am told that the big tower is max-ed out. No more major antennas can be added.

Also, if you're ever near the towers, look for a wire running between the two towers at ~150'. That's a big HF wire antenna the engineer uses for ham radio. It works AWESOME.

I'd read where that WKNO is going to stay on channel 29 after the transition and that there will be a new digital TV station on channel 10. What is the new station on 10 going to be?

Whatever WKNO wants it to be. They control the license.

It would already be on the air, if it were not for the fact that the analog CP was for channel 56, which has to go down in February. So, they are sitting on the CP 'til transition day.

WKNO & WKNO HD on one channel
Then several SD streams (including the current sub) on the other signal.

I've wondered why the Library and City Schools haven't tried to get on a sub channel yet. I remember the Library was also trying to get the ch56 allocation.
