WKRC transmitter trouble?

They need to have the transmitter checked, because when I did listen again early this morning, they were not on their night power. They are also much louder in modulation than WLW is and that has been that way for a long time.

I remember in 1962-63-64 being able to pick up WKRC regularly in south-central Kentucky during the day. It was heard best on an electric radio and away from florescent ights and other interence-type devices. At that time, the station used towers atop the Hotel Alms at Victory Parkway and Taft Road.

There are so many things that can keep an AM plant off the air or impared it's amazing any of the biggies stay on as much as they do. Pattern change requires contactors and relay logic to control them. There's coils and caps and other items involved. LOTS to go wrong, especially with power. The sad thing is all this mess takes tons of land and mulitple towers many times to make a pattern, so the management types never would think about a aux site for most AMs, even in large markets back in the day. Advance that to 2012 and there's no way in hell... High-powered directional AM is like hanging on to a tiger by the tail. When the SOB gets loose you're in for one hell of a ride!

The other factor these days working against AM engineering is lack of experience in many cases. Older engineers that knew AM are retiring out or dieing out and not nearly enough information is being transferred on to the younger guys. AM is almost a black art anymore. Even at the consultant level the options are getting slimmer by the day.

I was in the building in Cold Spring,KY in 1975 when that site was activated...sounded like someone removed a pillow from the radio speaker...remarkably better sounding than the Hotel Alms site--which I never did see.

The lack of attention that CC is giving to the AM band and the lack of maintenance is sad as it would've never happened when Jacor and Randy Michaels were in charge. It's too bad CC lets 55krc sound like garbage. They are no longer just a radio company now. Might as well move the entire AM band over to IHeartRadio.

They sound like they are on their normal night pattern. What are you hearing?

The station was totally off when I tried to hear "Simply Money" and was off and on every few minutes during Dave Ramsey and Mark Levin. After 11pm, everything was back to normal, but this went on for close to 5 hours.

Well, when I listened after 11PM last night they sounded like they were on normal night power and then later they were on their daytime power instead. They have had problems like this in the past so whatever is cause keeps happening every so often.

I was listening to Simply Money Thursday 6-7pm. I noticed a lot of weird noises like popping and hickup-ing type noises.

Seemed like it lasted about 30 seconds then ended then happened again after about 5 minutes, repeatedly.

So, its contributing to the whole "death of AM" deal? Kind of a self fulfilling prophecy?

I don't ever want to hear any criticisms of 1160's signal, anymore.
At least the bust a butt to keep it sounding good.

Actually, the new radials have improved your critical hours performance where I live, between Batavia and Amelia. I've been meaning to post that comment for a while now. Nighttime, is still unlistenable, however.

Thanks!! I like it when someone doesn't just arbitrarily trashes WQRT because its not Clear Channel and, i welcome the criticism.
We are waiting to hear what is going to happen with the WYLL Daytime pattern. That will make the Critical hours even better.
The hitch in my giddyup is the nighttime which was supposed to reduce skywave to WQRT by 20 or 30 percent. It didn't happen. So..... we just continue to apply some pressure.....

I have noticed the improvement in the daytime signal which will help you in the summer months. I also like the reverb on the station's processing.

In the meantime,WKRC is still running with daytime power after sunset.

The reverb is supposed to help with PPM. Good, robust modulation with high average peaks, will help with critical hours.
How odd on KRC. Do you guys listen for a pattern switch that isn't happening? How late in to the evening do they go without
making the change?

They haven't switched pattern/power at all since last Thursday when stereolane mentioned pops and cracks along with the transmitter dropping carrier all together. Normally they drop power switch pattern at sunset.
