WKRP on DVD...bad news.

Guys? What retail outlet can I walk into and buy WKRP on DVD?

I don't think any retail stores are carrying it yet, Chris. I think the mail-order houses like Amazon.com and the like are all that's carrying it yet.

The reviewer that did the blog about the changes and everything has the 1st season DVD, how he got a copy of it, I have no idea. But it'll be 3 weeks or so(around the time the DVD comes out to the general public) before you get it in the mail if you pre-ordered it from Amazon.com or stores like Best Buy and Circuit City.

Reviewers generally get advance copies of DVDs for review, so they could have time to do a write-up about it before the public gets their copies. Sometimes, there are changes between the copies the reviewer got and the actual copy that hits the stands. That said, there may be a chance that what the regular conumer gets may be at least a little different than what the reviewer got.

Well, I personally could not care two cents about the music. It was a SITCOM, not a music video, and I am very glad it is out!

I agree with your sentiments. Although music was heavily incorporated into the show and I will miss some of it, I'm just glad its available, which I think 99% of the population is missing the point. If WKRP had been set at a TV station, there would be zero complaints.

Just when you thought the show couldn't be butchered any more badly than the last syndie (TV Land) run:

I half agree with that. Yes it was a sitcom. However, since much of the humor centered around the jocks and the music they played, it's still relevant. I would hope that the music, if it is NOT the original music in the show at least fits the era and the storyline. If Johnny Fever is playing "Never Tear Us Apart" by INXS (which came out five years after the show was cancelled) during his shift, when he's supposed to be stuck in the 60's, that's going to look amateurish. Same goes if Venus is playing anything by Anita Baker, or if anything is played that's made after 1981.

There's plenty of 'lesser' hits by lesser artists from the era that have to be financially within reach that would have fit the format just fine.

I have the pilot on VHS and would like to find Turkeys Away on VHS as well, but haven't been able to. In an earlier thread I asked if it was available on VHS but got no response. So I assume it doesn't exist.

Turkeys Away was indeed available on VHS (MTM official release), along with the Pilot. With most (if not all) of the music is intact (it may be the syndicated cut, though). Came out around 1991. Keep a close eye on eBay, it comes up very rarely. It was only released the one time officially.

As for the DVD, I would have been happy if at least some of the "key" songs were retained (i.e. "Queen Of The Forest" by Ted Nugent in the Pilot, and "Hot Blooded" when Les dons his "Mr. Macho" hairpiece). But no such luck here.

For those of us who worked in the biz, that reasoning is a landful of rubbish. Rock n roll has its eras, and helps define the pop culture of our times.
It was a radio station for Gods sake...a radio station that played the hits of the day.

Authenticity. Thats the one reason I walked away from "American Dreams" during the first episode...using music that hadnt even been recorded at the episodes timeline. Even "cold case" will show dates and use music that wasnt even out at the time.

As much as I would like to see those shows again, I won't go near it with "generic tunes" that replace the Real Rock and Roll.....

OK...here's my review of the WKRP in Cincinnati 1st season DVD set...my wife bought it for me yesterday (at "Walley World").

Overall, I was satisfied with the set. Yes, some scenes involving music were dramatically edited down, but here's the tradeoff...the episode itself was longer to compensate for the edit. There was additional scene footage in the DVD version that had been cut from the televised series (the syndicated re-runs by Victory Television) to allow time for commercial breaks.

So...it's less music, more Nessman. :D I think it's worth the money.

Never buy anything from secondary sellers, most of them are bootleg copies of VHS tapes this goes not only from e-Bay but also from Amazon.

I found DVD copies of the original episodes online and my wife ordered them for me for Christmas but it was a horror story. The seller was offshore and it took forever for them to get here. When they did get here the quality was terrible, like an old VHS copy and the DVDs were burned on a computer. I reported them as scammers because they had tons of other complaints as well and they never answered their phone or emails. I can't even find the seller anymore so they must have crawled back to where they came from.

At least I got 'em and they have the original music.

OK. Here's what I need:

The latest best-quality copies of "WKRP in Cincinnati" WITHOUT any music trax.
All the original scripts - including notations of original songs played.
An iPod.
Any donation to help me remix the programs for the public good and pay my legal fees.

Somebody's GONNA do it. Why not me?

Any help on this???

Without any music -- original or replacement? Good luck finding them -- if there were any musicless WKRP masters in existence, they would've used that as a source of the DVD set and not the original broadcast version.

First they cancel this great show prematurely, then they made the reruns unwatchable with these shenanigans. I hope whoever is responsible gets giant, pus-filled anal warts that HURT REAL BAD!

I checked out this 3-year old revived thread hoping its something worthwhile and I read this??

Little overboard, eh?

Oh, there's a long list of people who should get those. Reality producers and oil execs would be in the top 5. The ones who ruined KRP are toward the bottom if it's any consolation ;). Those responsible for keeping shows like Facts of Life, Who's the Boss & One Day at a Time around twice as long are a little higher.
