WKRP on WGN last night

What the f**K? They replaced the music with some crappy 80s sounding rock music? How come they didn't edit out "you're haivng my baby" or Pink Floyd (guess it wouldn't have made sense, but neither does the other edits)? Anyone have any full original episodes? If there's a DVD box set and it's like this, forget buying it. I'm more than sure there are legal issues dealing with the music, but these edits are as corny as editing cuss words in movies shown on WGN.

Don't blame WGN America; the music issue on "WKRP..." was around long before this.

Cold Case must have worked something out with the music rights' owners in order for them to play the original music (even in syndication...let's not even get into the studio versions or remakes which are played; those are obvious).

Before the DVDs were released, I remember reading that licensing the music was a problem...which is why I'll NEVER purchase them, and will tell all that will listen not to.

Anyone know if the VHS tapes have the original music?...

You might get pirate copies with original music on e-bay, or there is a site somewhere in Canada that allegedly sells the originals on DVD, but they never came through with them when I tried to buy them. Maybe out of stock?

Without the original music it can be rather goofy. Last night Dr. Johnny Fever was obviously introducing Bob Seegers "Old Time Rock n Roll",,, I was expecting it,, and then the generic music came on and the entire bit made no sense.

On the other hand,, it was a great show, funny and rather accurate when it comes to radio. After seeing it without the original tunes, I might buy it anyway.

As Steven Wright said, 'You can't have everything,, where would you put it".

They actually left the reference to Bob Seger in there and didn't dub over his name/song title with something similarly sounding? I recall reading on some website that that was an issue, too.

These are all valid gripes. Very lamentable. You'd think they could find an uncomplicated way to clear all this music. Everyone would benefit.

Unfortunately, this is not a new problem. Examples:

In 1977's "Slapshot", starring Paul Newman, the musical soundtrack, which includes the hits "Right Back Where We Started From" by Maxine Nightengale and "A Little Bit South of Saskatoon" by Sonny James has been replaced by music so generic that it defies description. Having seen the original "version" several times, it seems sullied with the replacement soundtrack.

If that wasn't bad enough, consider this: A couple of years ago, Dragnet was released on DVD. Besides Jack Webb, what do you most associate with Dragnet? That musical overture, for lack of a better term, that goes "Dum-da-dum-dum!" It's not on any of the DVDs. Seems they couldn't get the music cleared. How can you have Dragnet without that musical signature? Is anything sacrosanct anymore? :(

Apparently this was limited to the version seen on TV (at least, commercial TV) -- the DVD release has all the original music intact (to my knowledge).

This was the 1960s version, wasn't it. What's especially funny is that just about every public domain DVD of the 1950s series has the famous theme. Dragnet without "Danger Ahead" (the name of the theme) is like McDonald's without the Golden Arches -- it's so enshrined with it that it's impossible not to include it.

You can thank/blame the RIAA for this mess. They have made the rules so tough to license music that the people they are supposedly trying to help (the songwriters) are getting screwed out of tens of millions of dollars in revenue. It's just easier to go grab something generic than deal with this bunch of goons.

It does.

That must be fairly recent, because the first time I saw the movie, it was on commercial TV, and "Right Back..." was in it.

You saw "Slapshot" on commercial TV? With all the edits they would have had to do because of language, violence, and sex, the film must have been cut down to about 33 minutes of running time!

Laaaate night. Had to have been mid- to late-80s, and it probably was still heavily edited. It was also one of the funnier movies I'd ever seen.

TV stations would take chances sometimes. I remember seeing "The Deer Hunter" on commercial TV, I think on WHEC in Rochester NY if I'm not mistaken.

I just saw this thread, and now am curious. What time does WGN run WKRP? I just checked the schedule for their cable channel, and didn't see any sign of the show anywhere.

Were you watching the cable version of WGN? Or was this on the local feed for Chicago?

It was a one-time thing on the superstation, during a week of retro programming. I'll probably pop up again one Sunday, when WGN-A has their Sunday night retro block.

Actually the real blame goes to Congress. Call them and complain and suggest a preservation of media history act that says once music is licensed for use in one medium it is fair use for future uses of that same media. That is the real answer. Even the WWE has done this, ie when Eric Bischoff made his WWE debut his theme was AC/DC's Back In Black, all videos since then have that replaced with the WWE theme he later used.

Congress has way more important things to do.

Don't waste my tax money on this, not even for one second's worth of hearings.

People have to stop expecting the government to fix everything they don't like.

If this is the biggest thing you have to worry about today, count yourself lucky.

As God as my witness...WKRP is back on TV! ;D I am so glad I checked this board..DVR is set!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
