WKXW # 1 in Monmouth-Ocean Spring 2010

Conratulations to Eric Johnson and consultant Holland Cooke,
and the entire airstaff.

WKXW is # 1 in Monmouth-Ocean, up 1.2 12+ and up
substantially in every daypart.

Proud to be New Jersey, New Jersey 101.5

YOOOOO!!!!!  The Rat JUMPED MAJORLY!!!

How did The Breeze fall?

Thunder is a roller coaster.  now they are above 3.0

Hit took a slight hit.

MAGIC!!!  Changed from a 2.9 to a 1.2!  Good decision on flipping.  WOBM really piledrived you!

And QXR is not even in the book!  Is anyone listening to classical on that 96.7 stick?

But alas, we can put the rumors on how 101.5 is failing to bed. Millennium is really billing well with 101.5, and they beat WABC.

All the Millennium stations seem to have done really well - kudos to the management & talent at WKXW/WJLK/WOBM (AM&FM) & WCHR-FM. Seems all the changes made over the past year or so have paid off.

Press seems to have screwed the pooch with The Breeze and Hit 106 - the Breeze is all over the place musically, and is trying to be all things to all people...and stumbling. Hit 106? A station in search of an audience...one that seems to be content with either listening to WJLK, WHTZ, or WXRK. Congrats to Thunder 98.5 for pulling decent numbers given the signal. One out of 3 ain't bad.

Greater Media....well, it seems that the Rat is doing great in its target demo of M25-54, and overall as well. WJRZ....well, looks like you CAN'T do "Magic." While one book does not a station make, a 1.2 12+? Their numbers in Women 25-54 were better the last book (as Classic Hits) than this one! And with a format that is supposed to be allot friendlier to a younger demo. Trying to squeeze inbetween WOBM & WJLK wasn't a good idea - maybe the station is billing well, if that's the case, good job selling the station rather than the numbers.

Given WCBS-FM's numbers, even though the signal can't even cover Monmouth county decently, let alone Ocean, someone with a struggling FM signal would be hep to go classic hits.

I really don't know what Greater Media was thinking by blowing up the classic hits format on WJRZ. I'd love to see someone try to put a positive spin on these numbers. The Breeze could have capitalized on this loss by luring in fans of 60's/70's/80's music, but instead they cut back the 60's in favor of more 2000's songs. Seems counter-productive to me, and the ratings are telling. Then again, maybe the tweaks to the Breeze are just in preparation for putting classic hits on 106.3/106.5. It would certainly do better than Hit 106, and at this point I've pretty much accepted that G-Rock isn't coming back.

Wow! What a huge jump for The Rat! To say the least, I am impressed that they pulled that off with their relatively weak signal and unchanging playlist. But it just goes to show you that having a stable on-air lineup goes a long way. The personalities at WRAT have developed a strong rapport with their audience, and there's no question in my mind that this is helping them out quite a bit.

Thunder is definitely having its ups and downs ... they're up big this time. They're definitely getting some help from the active promotion of the station and sponsorship of big concerts (i.e. Tim McGraw). Its success is making a pretty strong case for increasing its signal to the north, to cover more of Monmouth since they really don't have anyone providing Country music to the area on FM.

Which brings me to Hit. Continues to dwell way down there. Yes, it's true that I can't stand the station and would love to have G Rock back in some capacity. My opinion notwithstanding, the ratings for this very strong station are nothing short of abysmal. How this can somehow be sufficient, yet G Rock pulling two or three times the share isn't (as it did most of the time) ... that's completely beyond me. I still think Press will continue to plow on with Hit ... they're doggedly dedicated to Top 40, something I wish they had been with Alternative/Modern Rock.

As expected, Magic = FAILURE. I seriously can't get over how boneheaded a decision it was to flip Classic Hits for more of the same Katy Perry, Pink, John Mayer, Lady Gaga, and countless other acts we can hear on over half the stations on the dial. Oh, well. Their mistake will be WBNJ's gain ... definitely keep an eye out for them in the next book. They might not top the ratings book, but they'll definitely beat Hit & Magic - that's for sure.

Well, don't forget, WBNJ is non-commercial, so they won't show up in the main Arbitron list ... but, non-coms DO get rated, and I, too, am interested what impact they will eventually have ...

How can Press continue with Hit? Simple - they bill more revenue per ratings point. It's still an easier sell. I suspect even with "huh, oh, *there* they are" ratings they're billing better than G-Rock, and that'll keep them right where they are. That's business. Alternative doesn't bill well because business owners would prefer not to have "those people" patronizing their business.

And it'll still be business when they don't bill so well and flip to something, *anything* other than Alternative Rock.

I happen to like their flavor of hit radio, by the way; presentation and imaging are right on the money. Which is probably why they're doing so poorly. Memo to Hit 106: if you can get me to hate the station, objectively speaking, with every fiber of my being, you'll probably have a winner on your hands. I've resigned myself to that.
