WKZV, just when are they on, anyway?

The tired, old, original transmitter may have died. The last time I checked, the tubes were selling for $1,000.00 ea., if you could find them.

There's a letter in the FCC database dated 5/16/2013 requesting cancellation of the license due to
"adverse economic conditions and the health of its principal." See in WKZV's FCC correspondence
folder on CDBS. There does not appear to be any way to link to it directly.

I have been trying for months to talk to them about buying the station but no one ever answered the telephone.

On those rare occasions when they did talk to potential buyers they were not willing to include the real estate at the transmitter site.

The letter to the FCC states that they will maintain the towers until arrangements can be made to take them down. Sounds to me like they sold the land, which is undoubtedly worth far more than the station.

There will soon be a nice write-up in the Observer-Reporter about this. Ironically, one was just done in January by the same writer. I'm assisting him in this effort by tracking down former employees and others closely linked to the station.

I thought I heard WKZV on the air this morning.

Pretty unlikely since the license has been canceled. Depending on how early it was, you probably heard 1110 WBT/Charlotte, or if you were on a non-digital tuner possibly 1100 WTAM/Cleveland.

So for those of you who know the FCC rules, a question...

What happens when a license is cancelled? Can the frequency be applied for by others (granted in this case a whole new transmitter and tower site would have to be found, so it likely wouldn't be worth the investment), but just curious in general terms.

Can it be applied for at any time or does it have to wait for a filing window?

You would have to apply for the facility all over again, as if the original WKZV never existed. Since the FCC will no longer authorize daytime AMs, this allocation is dead.

Or you Could Find a Station In Another Market and Apply to move it to 1110 In washington Pa. Alex Langer has Done this Before. ie He Moved WAMO 660 Moved From 1470 Portage Pa.,
and 1530 from Mcconnelsburg to 1180 King of Prussia.

How they got away with the 1470-to-660 move is an interesting discussion in itself.

You could....but why would you?

See if this helps answer your question - go to deleted or cancelled stations paragraph -
