My guess is that the ancient transmitter blew another gasket. That seems to be a frequent problem
for them.

With all of the 1 KW and lower power AM stations biting the dust nationally, They should be able to round up a transmitter (or two) for almost the price of shipping. If there is an issue with the directional system then that is another problem that could cost serious $$. Just a quick frequency search and the chances of a translator are slim. Keymarket has 1130 deleted in Brownsville PA. They might want to check into 1130 nondirectional.

They need a new solid-state rig. It takes about 800 watts just to light the tube filaments. The tubes now cost about 1K$ each...if you can find them. When we switched to solid state transmitters we saved quite a bit on power. Our tubes took about 8,000 watts for the filaments. Our oldest transmitter required over 24,000 KW just for the heaters.

A new xmtr. will cost around 9 thou.

I know where there is a "retired" MW1 but I would not ship a 30+ year old transmitter with questionable support from Harris from GA. to PA.

sorry to say this cause I have a history with this station, but if they havn;'t done so already, It just might be past the time for them to just pull the plug on this old girl. who even listens to this station when it IS on the air?

I do. I like the Saturday morning/midday classic-country show.

BTW, 1110 is back on the air this morning.

I too listen to this hold out. The air tallent is for the most part professional, live and local which you don't find much of anymore. They are truly a trustee in the public interest. By my calculations they should be able to get about 2200 watts daytime with 1k critical hours but still no pre, post or night.

They may have a staffing problem. If Darrell or Bob couldn't make it to the station for some reason, I'm not sure that they have any backups. Who knows?

The last time I repaired the xmtr. she told me that the property was worth about a quarter million. Of course, the station license if worth $35.00 and a box of Payday candy bars.

Won't sell? Gas and Oil rights on tower site a reason?

Jim, I'm not sure how things are going natural gas-wise in PA, but folks down here that have any acreage aren't selling if they can possibly can avoid doing so, looking for the big strike. My dad has been gently persuading an elderly lady to sell for many years before anyone here heard of 'fracking,' but with the natural gas chase currently underway, people are holding on if they can.

That said, anyone with a dilapidated AM plant and sufficient land can turn to any number of companies that believe natural gas is in the area.
