WKZV TO 1340

Here's a Thought WKZV 1110 to 1340, Fulltime Signal. Could run Sports High School Football ect.

Too close to 1340 Steubenville (which I presume will be back on the air at some point).

How about 1340 to the Mon Valley (Charleroi, Donora, etc.) where it could run in tandem with 1450 WJPA,
giving them coverage in the eastern end of Washington County? (just like WBVP and WMBA do in Beaver Co.)

WKZV is willing to run Monday through Friday generating absolutely no income and make whatever they make on the weekend polka shows. They just play music all week with no spots.

No facility change will have any impact that business model, and they have also shown that they are not willing to put any money whatsoever into the station. They will do this until everyone relevant dies or can't work anymore and then they will turn in the license.

I can see where they would do 1340 if it becomes available (Phil Z does have a point). A much simplified transmitter site no directional gear to fix or maintain and one tower. They could run 6 or 5 AM till 10 or 11 PM easy. Of course coverage would be diminished some due to the higher frequency. I have sold high school football, easy money!

Did you read the post above yours?

As it turns out, 1340 in Washington PA would also be too close to 1340 in Clarksburg, West Virginia.
Even Connellsville was short-spaced. There may be another applicant for this frequency during the
next AM filing window, but it doesn't fit in Washington.

One addition to the list, Forever/Keymarket shut down another AM earlier this year. WBHV-1330 in Somerset is now silent. I believe the license was turned in on this facility as well.

There have been more discussions about WKZV on this message board than they have listeners.

Pretty standard here. The last 10 people who fine tune the AM dial gather to pretend it's all still relevant.

Uh, I think AM still can be relevant. I have more trouble choosing AM pre-sets than FM ones (though I have a little difficulty sometimes with my music-and-entertainment FMs while I have a pretty good mix of more serious FMs).

My current AM list, for what it is worth:

KDKA 1020 CBS
WMBS 590 CBS
WPIT 730 Salem
WJAS 1320 NBC
WMNY 1360 NBC
KQV 1410 ABC

I listened to KQV for a bit in the car yesterday. First time in a long while.
The poor guy I was listening to sounded as if he had had a stroke. I really
felt sorry for him. The anchor sounded as if he were 87 years old and had
left his reading glasses at home. I applaud KQV's loyalty to their employees
but this was very difficult to listen to after awhile.

You are correct.

Relevant to people under 40? No.

OK, I do have 12 FM pre-sets. WSHH, WWSW, WJPA, WKFB, WPKV and WHJB on one row, WORD, WPGB, WESA, West Virginia Public Radio, KDKA and WQED on the other. So I'm not exactly swigging on Geritol when I drive. But what AMs would you pre-set?

WWCS? If you're into national sports, fine. If their signal was any better these days, who knows?
WKHB? A possibility at night if you're in range of its 50 watts, or on FM if you're in the Glassport-Clairton area. During the day? I'm not into quack radio.
WAMO? Sorry, frankly, it is not my cup of tea, either. It is a far better station now than it was when it first signed on, if you are into that sort of music.
WEDO? If you're into Catholic programming, ethnic fare, old time radio or polkas, why not?
WAOB? If I want to pre-set that one, I do it on FM 106.7. But I have three other religious stations now.

WAVL? A good source of national talk during the day. But it would rank behind KDKA, WPGB and WMNY as talk options.
WBGG? While there are some local shows, I'm as much into ESPN as I am Fox Sports Radio as WWCS offers.

And so it goes.

The point is not that there are better choices, but to dispute your claim that these stations are "relevant" to anyone under retirement age. They are, in fact, the best of what's available. And I might listen to a newscast on KD or KQV once in a blue moon as well. I do, however, wish that 540 with Fox Sports (at least with Dan Patrick and Jim Rome) was actually trying.

Here are mine. Of course, I work for two of them.

620 WKHB
770 WKFB
1020 KDKA
1320 WJAS
1410 KQV

Ah, no doubt you have KDKA and KQV because, as one of the announcers there puts it, 770KFB plays more music than KDKA and KQV combined, and you need to keep track of what songs they're playing. Seriously, thank you for your thoughts on this subject. I'm trying hard not to start thinking I'm some sort of Methuselah given some of the response.
