WKZV TO 1340

Mine are the same as Clarke's, plus WAMO.

I also love scanning seeing what I can find on the AM band when I'm driving around at night. Call me childish but hearing a station come in from Canada or NYC is just still so neat to me.

Night time scanning is not as fun as it used to be. Many stations running Coast to Coast, Mark Levin,ESPN or RG Stair...from Walterboro South Carolina.

I don't think a childlike wonder at what can be snagged from distant points is the same as being "childish." And I still am amazed, 50 years after snagging my first out-of-town stations, at what can be snagged even with the scanning mechanism of a modern car radio. (Or perhaps because of that mechanism, which stops at just about every frequency at night.) I'm a fan of KYW-1060 in Philadelphia because of my DX habit.

I think the only disappointment these days is the knowledge that one will find few real surprises on most out-of-town stations. One can stand only so many landings on stations that delay Hannity or run Savage.

So I'm not exactly swigging on Geritol when I drive. But what AMs would you pre-set?

And here are mine. Like Mr. Ingram, I work for two of them.

680 WISR (oldies)
1050 WBUT (country)
1480 WCNS (nostalgia)

Phil,

For the extremely small revenue potential that a night signal would provide to any of these small AM's, it is simply not worth the construction costs.

I'm lost in the Great Past of AM Radio where my Hero Myron Jones Took his 1570 Daytime Erie and Turned it into 1400 Fulltime[WJET]. Then Moved his 1570 to Y Town and Turned it into 1330 [WHOT] ,500 watts Day 1Kw Night. He also Tried Twice with 1080 Pgh. The FCC did not like the First Move to Mt. Oliver. And the Land Owners Stopped the Second Fulltime Move. but he Did incress Power to 50k. I Still Listen to AM Keeping up on the Local Stations, And Love Nighttime DXing.

One exception: high school sports. It won't pay all the bills, but it might be the difference between a small
station being profitable or unprofitable.

Also, even if you only have low power at night (as 620 does) it helps to be on the air 24 hours a day for at
least that part of the audience that can hear you.

620 during the overnight hours is just about the best thing on the radio these days.

I only wish the coverage was a wee bit better here in the city (or that they'd upgrade
94.1 already)

The music is good, but in my opinion, 620 could use some window dressing. Of course, there are no live
personalities during the nighttime hours.

Don't worry, the 94.1 upgrade will be upcoming. Only Bob knows the schedule, and it will happen on his
timetable.

C. Why No High School Sports on 620?

That's a good question, since we did it back in the WHJB days. I can't speak to Bob's reasons, but those games
(and setting up to broadcast them remotely) take lots of work, we're minimally staffed these days, and the night
signal isn't what it was when the 620 directional array was in place.

It's surprising that some enterprising sports types haven't come forward looking to buy the air time and sell their own spots. However, the people who would do that nowadays are generally taking their broadcasts straight to the internet where the costs are lower. Get a laptop, wireless data air card, and some mixing equipment and you are in business.

It can be done with very minimal staffing with some creative engineering. I have done high school games with the broadcasts fully automated using a dial-up remote control system, no board op required.

Childish? Not hardly.

Even today, there isn't a serious sports fan who doesn't do what you're trying to do to pick up games when they are driving around.

Mr. Hawk, How about 1340 for 1050 Butler?

I doubt it...with 1320 and 1360 both running at 5kw, Tony Renda would likely have a case in getting it blocked.

It looks like any hopes of WKZV going to 1340 are nill at this point. Keymarket filed an STA extension in September. The commission granted it. So, nothing new to report for another four and a half months.

That's good cause I couldn't sell the wife on the idea of moving to Glassport.

Yinz can add WSTV 1340 to the list of "Stations whose Licenses Have Been
Sent Back by Keymarket"
