Just heard WLEY is picking up the Chulo show from a station in Austin. What type of show is it? More or less like Piolin show? Will it work in Chicago?

The show is firmly in the Renan / Don Cheto / Piolin / Pistolero / Mandril camp. And WLEY is not picking up the show in syndication, it has hired the guy, Juaquin Garza, away from KHHL in Austin.

With Pistolero on WOJO and Piolin on WPPN, a new show of the same kind is going to have a big challenge.

DAVIDE. WHEN LA LEY STARTED IN CHGO THEY PUT A WHOOPING ON HBC.
WHAT HAPPENED THAT THEY CANT SEEM TO CLOSE THE GAP ON THE RATINGS?

At that time, when WLEY debuted, WOJO was horribly programmed, with little attention to the fact that the market had become overwhelmingly Mexican in origin and taste; the turn-around came when the new GM, Jerry Ryan and OM César Canales brought in Rafael Pulico, "El Pistolero," and PD "El Primo Rafa" and went fully regional Mexican.

Very true. WOJO seemed to be all over the map as well, WLEY also was/is one of the few suburbans station with a truly monster signal that really does reach into the inner city as well as any of the stations broadcasting off the sears or hancock towers. When they launched, they were tight, well presented and very focused. They were killing all the other Spanish language stations. WOJO seemed to lose its way afterwards, becoming a station that played more re-currents and songs 5-10 years old. Not to mention they went almost to a pop format, abandoning the "regional Mexican" that they had been known for previously. I remember going into shops on West 26th street hearing WLEY everywhere. I only remember one place playing WOJO, a Bakery outside of "La Villita" It seems that they have found their focus again.

WOJO was always, back to the 80's, a blend of AC, regional, etc., and loose in its playlist. It was never pop or AC, though, just too broad. If anything, it was sort of MOR and had a horrible morning show and played way to many new cuts and not enough hits. It was never a pure regional, either, until just a few years ago. In fact, until it went talk, the regional station was WIND, while WOJO was a blend format always.

THANKS FOR THE 411 DAVID E.
