I should clarify this for everyone.
Venture Technologies owns two low-power television stations in the Chicago market:
WCHU
Analog Channel 61 WCHU-LP Rochelle, IL
Digital Channel 44 WCHU-LD Chicago, IL (Displays on 61-1 and 61-2)
WLFM
Analog Channel 6 WLFM-LP Chicago, IL
I think that analog Channel 61 is no longer on the air, even though they are not required to shut it down yet. All stations transmit from John Hancock Center. The two analog channels had a directional signal going southwest. Channel 44 just went on the air a couple of weeks ago. Channel 44 seems to have a better signal than the analogs, which is not directional, however it is alot weaker than the other low-power digital station transmitting from downtown: Channel 39 WWME-LD (Displays on 23-2 through 23-8).
Here is a map of Channel 44's coverage area:
http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=LD1318780.html
The circle on the above map should be smaller. Channel 44 is broadcasting with two sub-channels:
Display 61-1 WCHU - Azteca America (Spanish language network)
Display 61-2 WLFM - 'The L' (simulcast of sister-station Analog Channel 6, pictures of downtown Chicago scenery with Smooth Jazz audio)
For some strange reason, the first generation Zenith converter box (DTT900) is not receiving any audio on display channels 61-1 and 61-2. I blame the TV station for this because audio can be heard on
all other channels. I heard that other brand converter boxes are getting audio with 61-1 and 61-2, so I have no idea why this is happening. I don't know if the Zenith converter box (DTT901), the one that has 'analog pass thru' receives audio on 61-1 and 61-2.
The previous poster was not trying to receive 'The L' on Channel 6. The poster was trying to get audio on 61-2.
The situation in New York is alot different than Chicago, and I think eventually the FCC will them to stop. Channel 6 WNYZ-LP in New York is owned by a different company, Island Broadcasting. They are getting away with broadcasting video in digital, but audio in analog so the station can still be received on most (but not all) radios at 87.75 FM. Strangely, the digital TV channel maps to Channel 1-1, which does not seem legal. Does anyone know if audio can be heard in New York when watching the digital TV station (actual Channel 6 / Display Channel 1-1)?
At some point, Venture Technologies is going to have to move off channel 44 because WLS-DT has requested to the FCC to move it's actual channel from 7 to 44 because of reception complaints. WCHU-LD Channel 44 has an application to move to channel 26. WLFM-LP has an application to flash-cut using the same channel number in digital as their analog. When that happens, that may be the end of 'The L' on radios.
