WLFM

did they pull the plug on WLFM???? IT'S BEEN OFF THE AIR SINCE 5;30am today. anybody know anything??PEACE BOBBY.

I just went to their web site and it is UNAVAILABLE!!!!!

Lots of possibilities of "not on" for an automated satellite delivered stream like that. My best suggestion is to call them.

FROM THE WEBSITE; Contact WLFM

No worries all...the LA fires cause a hitch in our internet feed from LA to Hancock...we were back on by 2pm. Thanks to everyone who reached out....

Couldn't WLFM flip over automatically to a backup source of music on a computer when the satellite/internet feed goes down?
I would rather have some repetition than several hours of "dead air" I need my Smooth Jazz! (;

There's a "Now Playing on WLFM" section on the website, http://www.wlfm877.com/
That's handy if the Title/Artist might not get mentioned on-air for that song, or you just missed it, and you want to know "Who was that?"
Title/Artist info. is still available on yes.com, just enter WLFM under "Search for Channels" in the upper left corner of the webpage.
I asked WLFM if they could have Title/Artist with the RDS/RBDS signal that now only shows "WLFM" on radios so equipped.

Hello pat,

WLFM-61.2 has no audio for me on my Zenith DTT-900 digital converter box, but I do note that on Samsung and other TV's, it works. AVS Forum posters are also complaining about it. Can you check into this, please? Thanks!

I wasn't aware that WLFM was broadcasting in DTV mode. Aren't they only an analog TV station? The FM sound carrier is incompatible with 8VSB DTV transmission.

If you have one of the older Zenith converters that lacks pass-through (e.g., the DTT-900), you will not be able to receive any analog TV stations unless you rig a bypass switch to bypass the converter. It sounds to my like that is your problem. I have the later generation Zenith box; DTT-901, which does have analog pass-through. When you turn it off, the analog TV signal is passed through the converter to the TV set.

I think the problem is on your end, not at WLFM.

That's what I used to think, but I have it on good authority WRGB in Schenectady was running both. Pretty sure WNYZ ("Pulse 87") is still running that way.

I don't know how well the 8VSB was working though.

I should clarify this for everyone.

Venture Technologies owns two low-power television stations in the Chicago market:

WCHU
Analog Channel 61 WCHU-LP Rochelle, IL
Digital Channel 44 WCHU-LD Chicago, IL (Displays on 61-1 and 61-2)

WLFM
Analog Channel 6 WLFM-LP Chicago, IL

I think that analog Channel 61 is no longer on the air, even though they are not required to shut it down yet. All stations transmit from John Hancock Center. The two analog channels had a directional signal going southwest. Channel 44 just went on the air a couple of weeks ago. Channel 44 seems to have a better signal than the analogs, which is not directional, however it is alot weaker than the other low-power digital station transmitting from downtown: Channel 39 WWME-LD (Displays on 23-2 through 23-8).

Here is a map of Channel 44's coverage area:

http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=LD1318780.html

The circle on the above map should be smaller. Channel 44 is broadcasting with two sub-channels:

Display 61-1 WCHU - Azteca America (Spanish language network)
Display 61-2 WLFM - 'The L' (simulcast of sister-station Analog Channel 6, pictures of downtown Chicago scenery with Smooth Jazz audio)

For some strange reason, the first generation Zenith converter box (DTT900) is not receiving any audio on display channels 61-1 and 61-2. I blame the TV station for this because audio can be heard on all other channels. I heard that other brand converter boxes are getting audio with 61-1 and 61-2, so I have no idea why this is happening. I don't know if the Zenith converter box (DTT901), the one that has 'analog pass thru' receives audio on 61-1 and 61-2.

The previous poster was not trying to receive 'The L' on Channel 6. The poster was trying to get audio on 61-2.

The situation in New York is alot different than Chicago, and I think eventually the FCC will them to stop. Channel 6 WNYZ-LP in New York is owned by a different company, Island Broadcasting. They are getting away with broadcasting video in digital, but audio in analog so the station can still be received on most (but not all) radios at 87.75 FM. Strangely, the digital TV channel maps to Channel 1-1, which does not seem legal. Does anyone know if audio can be heard in New York when watching the digital TV station (actual Channel 6 / Display Channel 1-1)?

At some point, Venture Technologies is going to have to move off channel 44 because WLS-DT has requested to the FCC to move it's actual channel from 7 to 44 because of reception complaints. WCHU-LD Channel 44 has an application to move to channel 26. WLFM-LP has an application to flash-cut using the same channel number in digital as their analog. When that happens, that may be the end of 'The L' on radios.

The August PPM ratings came out and WLFM-LP has a 1.2 share and almost 500K listeners. Not bad for an out-of the way frequency...

I hope that Smooth Jazz 87.7 has some kind of plans to go on another frequency in case the FCC 'sunsets' analog on LPTV stations. But that may be 2 or 3 years.
They seem to be doing alright bringing in the $$$, judging by the number of commercials, though some are really repetitive, like Safelite, and the Sally Field/Boniva spots. There is room in Chicago for Smooth Jazz, even if the corporate big wigs don't think so.

The question still has not been answered if Venture Technologies is subscribing to Arbitron. If they aren't, then the ratings can not be used by their salespeople.

I don't listen to this station much because I'm still mad that they killed the Alternative Country, but most of those ads do not bring in much revenue. Some of the spots are from the network feed, so the network keeps the money from those ads. Other commercials that mention a toll free number to call to buy a product or service, pay a commission to the station after a purchase is made. The rep on the telephone asks the caller for the name of the station that they heard the commercial.

The corporate big wigs at Cheap Channel still think that their is room for a Smooth Jazz station in Chicago, that's why you can hear it at 95.5 WNUA-HD2.

Patrick Kelley can answer that one, Pat?
