WLIR is Back

I was listening to WLIR on the web and I wanted to ask if TMO is going to bring back the staff they laid off before the flip?

I was wondering if TMO will buy back the 92.7 signal from Univision.

The 92.7 signal that is a simulcast for the WCAA is not doing to good because of the rapid format change to keep the ratings up

Well, let's take this one at a time, shall we?

"(Is) TMO...going to bring back the staff they laid off before the flip?"

I would hope that the former air staff of WLIR would have found some employment in those three months. I realize that many people posting on message boards think that air talent and PDs are chess pieces to be moved at a whim, but in fact they are real people with families in need of making the rent, car payments and maybe even purchasing food. If they didn't find employment in the broadcasting field, they are doing something to make a dollar (I hope). Some folks might find being a greeter at Wal-Mart a better paying job.

Now, BJ, how eager would YOU be to go back to the former employer who fired you? Remember as you think about it that TMO doesn't have a great track record on long-term formats.

"I was wondering if TMO will buy back the 92.7 signal from Univision."

Why and for how much? Let's see: Univision paid SIXTY FOUR MILLION DOLLARS for the little class A from Garden City. Stupid money. What was the figure - 64X billing?? Now TMO should GIVE IT BACK? Ain't gonna happen, dude. Could it? Yeah, if Univision walked away from the station, threw the keys and the license into the transmitter shack and left the door unlocked...then I could see John C. going back.

"The 92.7 signal that is a simulcast for the WCAA is not doing to good because of the rapid format change to keep the ratings up"

Attempts to parse that statement made my head hurt, but I think you were trying to say that the WCAA/WZAA simulcast is not doing well in the ratings, right?

Hope this helps.

Bottom line: Ain't gonna happen.

I believe you are right Don Revert.

Check out www.radioandrecords.com/rrratings and click Nassau/Suffolk market and tell me if I am wrong (WCAA/WZAA Ratings). Long Island has seen a big jump in the spanish speaking population and both station should have been at the top of the market.

TMO shouldnt have sold the 92.7 signal to Univision. <That was a bad deal.

People in NYC, Jersey and Nassau County who have listened to WLIR 92.7 have missed some of the great programming WLIR had to offer.

I hope this helps you

Why not? Who else would offer them $64 million for that Class A stick? TMO has made plenty of boneheaded moves, but I can't blame them for taking that much money and running. I doubt their three East End sticks are worth much more than 10% of that combined.

What TMO shouldn't have done is flip-flopped its formats every other week. First you had "The Box" then a few months later, they brought LIR back from the dead for a few more months, sometimes the online stream worked and sometimes it didn't, then they jettisonned that for "NeoBreeze" and three months later, swallowed their pride and brought back LIR again. Not to mention not many people can hear 107.1 other than out in the sticks. Maybe they could have invested some of that $64 million in buying another station that covers Nassau/Western Suffolk but that clearly hasn't happened.

You're right about WCAA/WZAA though...if I remember correctly, in the first full ratings book after the switch, the station actually plummeted in the LI book and hasn't gone up too much since then. It doesn't seem to have paid off too much for Univision Radio, and in fact, I doubt they're even paying much attention anymore. Anyone tune to 92.7 lately? The audio sounds horrible, like it's coming in from a dial-up internet connection or something. Been like that for days, no one seems to have done anything about it. They certainly don't seem to be heavily promoting the second frequency.
