WLIR: It's going to hell, isn't it?

It's official. As of Monday, I heard ESPN radio on 107.1

There's no point for it. ESPN 1450 out of Atlantic City is the strongest AM station in the day in eastern Long Island, and 1050 comes in well at night.

But that is the point. It's one of the strongest AM stations *in the day*. Most Knicks and Rangers games are in the evening. In addition, 1450 does not air Knicks and Rangers games, but instead, the Sixers and Flyers. As for 1050, it does not come in well at all. I was never able to get even a halfway decent signal on 1050 in most of Suffolk county in the evenings, and seeing that this has been discussed before at length on this and other boards, it seems that I'm hardly the only one.

With WEPN not making it past central Suffolk county, this is a good move for 107.1. The only problem that remains is that WLIR's signal towards the west gets destroyed by 107.1 The Peak, and along the south shore, by 107.1 The Breeze. So that still leaves a large and populated area where neither WLIR or WEPN have good signals.

reddg108 called it right on target. This is a good move by TMO Radio. It seems like TMO Radio has been making some smart moves lately. Are they getting ready to sell again, did they have a management change or did they once again strike pure luck. Kudos TMO on making some great moves. Now they just need to work on their integrity and respectability and they might have a chance of coming full circle

With having John C at the helm they are never going to have the integrity... He has one of the biggest ego i have ever seen and that is why no one wants to work for him nor help the station.. The station would be doing much better if he was not there.. Since that is not going to happen they are not going to get where they are supposed to be

I must add that as great of a person as Vic Latino is the ego thing must be contagious cause I heard from a friend who ran into Vic just the other day and MAN!!! does power go to people head quick!!!

hmmm, will 2 egos make a--- ah never mind.

I used to care and was interested about anything TMO but as of late, I'm fnally done with waiting and hoping for something good to come out of their collection of stations. After decades of being a huge fan of LIR, I can now say that I don't care at all who's there and what they're doing. There's nothing there for me to listen to.

John C's and the TMO ego has always been an issue. Thats why their turnover of staff has always been so high. If they would learn to recognize talent and take some people skills courses, they might actually be able to build a great organization. I love the line that RadioDaze used in one of the threads about being the Largest Independent. In a land of 1 legged men, the 2 legged man is king. So RadioDaze, you are either at the helm of TMO and trying to get the organization some credibility or you were brainwashed before you were committed to the asylum. Again, I will say that TMO has made some great moves, but that will never overcome managements shortcomings.

If only WLIR was resurrected and moved back to 92.7 Why the hell do we need another non-american (spanish) station anyway? Is this the USA or Mexico for christ sake. Can't help to feel that way whenever a good station like WLIR and others around the country get destroyed by someone wanting to put up non-english/ethnic music in it's place.

There are about 60 million reasons why 92.7 is the format that it is now.

When will radio geeks (people who love radio, not meant in a bad way) understand that format is just a vehicle to bring in revenue. A station that you love to listen to and have loved listening to for years, would change their format in a heartbeat if they thought the new format would bring in more revenue. Look at WCBS-FM, 101.9 and a few others.

And Party is also steering toward that direction, Vic Latino is pushing some of the 98.5 music on the AM show. Our country is being taken over and TMO is helping them. Thats why Andre was let go.

I gotta say something here because this thread will go to hell if I don't.....

For those of you that might have remembered posts I've made back in 2001 or so, I had wanted Party 105 to simulcast their signal on 92.7 in order to get to NYC with their rhythmic format since 'KTU, and for that matter Mix 102.7, stayed old. So, the signal was sold to Univision and you have a Latin format...first the simulcast with "La Kalle" and now the Mexican format.

Regardless of how you may feel about Latinos from other countries coming into the country (I am Puerto Rican so I'm a citizen by default), they have the right to hear their music just as much as we have the right to hear our music. While not the best example, when 103.5 changed from country to 'KTU...I'm sure the country music fans were pissed that a station that they felt catered to "gays" was taking over their music (and this I DID hear firsthand while going to a country music club around the time of the flip in 1996).

Basically, it stinks when radio flips format....look how the CBS people felt. But it is NOT fair to blame a culture or a society for this when clearly a radio station is only about wanting to make much money and will do whatever it takes to get those revenues.

Thank you

Tony:

While I know radio is a business, at the same time it feels like they cater to illegals and others who don't want to learn english. If any of us go to other countries, we would be expected to know their language. Even if there were people at businesses you encountered that spoke english, that doesn't mean they prefer to speak it over their native tongue. The same applies here in the US..only here they get catered to in the media in all ways possible. Then there's the job postings that require you to be bilingual and you're not even dealing with people overseas. It's gotten out of hand. WLIR was a legendary alternative rock station that got sold out. Now we're left with more non-english stuff in their wake with more companies that desire to turn english stations into spanish and other non-english stations.

Sir, while you are entitled to your opinion, as many people do decry the increasing amount of non-English speakers in the United States, your politically-tinged comments here are inappropriate and uninformed. TMO sold the 92.7 frequency to a group that wanted to pay, overpay even, for it. There is no question to the fact that they would have sold 92.7 to the BBC, Al Jazeera or the Grand Ole Opry had any of them offered more than Univision, and this is common knowledge to anyone who has experience in the field.

You are right about "catering" though, as EVERY radio station caters to an audience...that's how it works my friend. If there is a strong-enough audience, a radio station will cater to it. If there were a few million Eskimos living in the area, you better believe there would be an Inuit station in the works (or at least demanded on radio-boards). ;D

Also, people are entitled to speak any language they please. Just because you don't speak Spanish doesn't mean other people have a problem with it. And as for tourists being expected to speak the native language, that's simply not true. With the exception of France, Americans enjoy speaking English with fair success across the world, wherever they visit.

Perhaps you should stop at the Roswell kiosk at the mall and pick up some Spanish lessons. I know plenty of natural-born Americans who learn Español, and if I'm not mistaken it's still taught in high school.

You could even check out Dora the Explorer. ;) Welcome to 2008. Things are what they are, they're going where they're going, and they don't and won't change simply because you don't like them. Live in the now or end up obsolete.

Adiós!

This board is not the place for political rants.

"I know I'm old fashioned": OK, nothing wrong with that. You're also right in stating English is the official language. But claiming that citizens of this country are a blanket, all English-speaking group is incorrect, even if you insist on it.

You're right in saying the airwaves belong to the "people", but minus the quotes. They belong to people, meaning all people. There are millions of American citizens who enjoy non-speaking broadcasts, with English-speaking citizens still receiving the vast majority of content.

Blaming illegal immigrants for non-English broadcasting is wildly off-base and completely uninformed. Take a drive around Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, The Bronx, Long Island, among many, many communities in the area, and see the thousands of signs written in several languages. One of the reasons that New York City is the greatest in the world is its international attitude. It makes us a true metropolis, and it was, and continues to be, built on the backs of people from all corners of the world.

Our government will never force people to speak English. It shouldn't and hopefully it wouldn't. I do not think that my post is going to change your mind, but I sincerely hope you don't use someone's spoken language as a barometer of their humanity.

If English is to stay the official language of the USA forever, you should be more interested in bringing people INTO the fold, not excluding them for whatever bias you hold. Treating an ever-growing populace like outsiders isn't going to make them want to learn a new language, and with the Internet, several TV and radio stations, as well as their neighbors and bosses offering inclusion, you'll find that mean-spirited demands will only insure that people stay in their comfort zone, and if that means speaking something besides English, don't be surprised.

I'm sure someone will feel the need to reply to this post, extolling the virtues of the "let them go back to where they come from-ism", so go ahead, but I'm moving on, and looking forward to posting on RADIO issues.

Two points:

1. The United States of America does not have an "official" language.

2. TMO/Jared received 64 MILLION DOLLARS for the license & stick of a Class A FM. As we have discussed here before - that is stupid money. No one (even NOT in their right mind) would not have tossed them the keys and ran as soon as the check cleared!
