WLOS Channel 13 Moves To Pinnacle Mountain

News Article: WLOS Moves in WNC
WLOS is about to move their transmitter site off Mount Pisgah to Pinnacle mountain, just west of Hendersonville. Perhaps this will improve signal in Upstate SC. This is the same site formerly used by WMYI 102.5. I wonder if WKSF on 99.9 will ever make the moce there as well.

After years on Mt. Pisgah, WLOS is now broadcasting RF13 from Pinnacle Mountain in Henderson County, with a much better signal serving Upstate SC. This tower also hosts PBS-NC Channel 33 and WESC 92.5, and was the former home of WMYI 102.5 and WYCW Channel 62. The Pisgah site still hosts 99.9-WKSF, which was the former WLOS-FM.

Th official ABC affiliate now reaches the Upstate of SC, although WSOC-TV Channel 9 from Charlotte also reaches Spartanburg and was often the only choice for ABC until the WLOS upgrade.

There was likely some signal loss in the far Western NC Mountains (along & near the Tennessee border), due to the slight decrease in transmitter height ...

Pinnacle Mountain is exactly halfway between Greenville & Asheville, which probably makes it one of the best possible locations for broadcasting FM & TV service to both Greenville AND Asheville, without being blocked out by the mountains & surrounding terrain.

I remember WMYI used to have a slightly better signal in Asheville before moving to its current site, although it looks like WMYI still maintains an AUX site on Pinnacle Mounatin as well.

My ATSC TV Boombox had a much better OTA signal from WLOS Channel 13, in the Eastern Upstate, signal is even slightly better than co-owned WMYA on Channel 40, which (not sure why) MyNetworkTV was ever moved to WLOS subchannel 13-2. I guess the move to Pinnacle makes up for that (signal wise)

Are you getting a better signal now from Pinnacle Mountain? My reception from RF13 is much better now in Spartanburg County near Inman. I was not getting a watchable signal from Pisgah, but now I get a reliable signal from Pinnacle. But ironically I was getting ABC on WSOC Channel 9 from Charlotte, both RF12 and RF19.

By the way, a good compact antenna for High VHF reception is the Element antenna from Antennas Direct. It has the long elements for VHF, as well as UHF capability. And a direct input coax connection. It is often on sale for $56 when they offer the 20% off discount around holidays. Normal price $69. And for challenging areas, Stellar Labs has 2 dedicated High VHF antennas, sold at the Newark warehouse in Gaffney.

Most folks complaining about VHF reception are not using the correct antenna. Those flat panels are optimized for UHF, and may not receive VHF. In western NC, High VHF capability is needed to receive WLOS on RF13, WSPA on RF11, WSOC on RF12, and SCETV on RF8. In some cases basic rabbit ears may work, otherwise one of the larger antennas previously mentioned may be necessary.
