WLOS Radio Asheville

Thanks for the info. I worked at Kiss in 1985 (when it was at WISE), but I left before it was sold. I'm still not used to WKSF being licensed to Old Fort.

I worked at WRAQ in 1978 when they switched calls from WKKE and went head-to-head with WISE, with a Top-40 format. Mike Hall and I both left WISE to go to the Q. I remember that the old WLOS calls were still embeded into the floor, in the lobby. I returned to WRAQ briefly in 1981 as the PD/afternoon jock when they were country. I wanted to take it modern country and they didn't, so I left. I didn't intend on staying long anyway, only long enough to find another Top-40 gig. Garrett Alderfer was still GM at that time.

Oops. This is an old thread, and it has all been said except for this:

Regarding Kiss FM's top 40 years, they were leaning rock late in the 80s and then they were adult contemporary right before they switched to country. I remember hearing Crosby, Stills and Nash and even Otis Redding's "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay".

And if I remember correctly, it was during this short-lived AC period that the "WKSF" calls were used in tandem with the "Kiss" slogan. In other words, the calls weren't restricted to a quick once-an-hour mention during the legal ID. Oh, how I wish the heyday of the heritage Kiss-FM could've continued. I was actually thinking yesterday -- as I was able to get some hints of "Star 104.3" driving around Morganton -- what if CC flipped country over to 104.3 and Hot AC to 99.9.

The year I spent at UNCA, 99.9 KissFM and WIMZ were about the only stations anyone listened to, except the retired people who were taking classes. ;)

WOW!!! WKSF That station from September 84 thru about Decemember of 86 was one kick ass Top 40 for it's day... Once it was sold the format went to hell in a handbag... I remember the old TV spots with the two wrestlers or boxers in the ring bashing boom boxes into each other... KISS was one heck of a station putting "FUN" and in your face radio to a new level... They were always poking fun of WCKN down in GSP anytime they could always calling them Chicken and other names. By the time 1987 rolled around all te sizzle had pretty much beentaken away and Kiss would have passed to what today would be Jack or Bob... I never knew that Kiss was experimenting with AC during it's end though... I just know Bill and Todd Z tried to reinvent iss with a fresher Top 40 feel and then ther next thing I remember hearing Brooks & Dunn... I love learning and love Carolina Radio past so glad I could contribute... CC1

CrazeeCarroll1 how well can you hear Star 104.3 in Morganton and east of Asheville? Speaking of Star, this is one of my favorite topics. I have listened to Star since day one. Does anyone know what ever happened to Mark Andrews, the previous morning guy with Tricia Kelley. I believe she is doing a exercise spot on WLOS-TV. I spoke to Mark (before he left) about the changes that they had planned for Star durning the evening hours, to turn it up a notch or too. It seemed to all go down hill after they let him go last year, big mistake. Now it seems to be the same, day and night with Prince every hour. Does anybody have any inside information on Star 104.3?

I no longer live in the Carolinas... Back in the day before WRFX increased power I could listen to Kiss all the way down in Kershaw SC where I lived, but once Fox cranked their power up Kiss was pretty much gone... Never got to listen to 104.3 except when we travel through Asheville on the way to see my parents... I just remember Kiss having that monster signal whenI was going to schoolin Spartanburg... When WKSF first signed on I remember people calling in from SC, NC, TN, KY, GA, and I wanna say VA as well... CC1

When I moved to Asheville in 1984, I remember being suprised how few FM's there were in the region. My memory is that WKSF, WKIT Hendersonville (with that neat "wooo hooo hooo WKIT..." jingle), WSPA by translator, and WXRC Hickory on a good day, were the pickings. AM radio was still ruling pretty well around there then. I had just moved from Fayetteville were FM was dominating that market...
I opted for WXRC in those days... J.P. was the longtime morning man ("lookout! beware the fog!")... I have wondered where he eventually landed...

No, too many people like country.

WKBC reaches Morganton. I remember when WZLS first came on and I was in a car without a digital display. I thought WKBC was a pretty good AC, but at the time I thought it was the new WZLS.

Then I heard death metal on WXRC and thought THAT was WZLS.

I am trying to locate Snuffy Smith -- Worked with him, Little Joe Brown, Bob Manning and danny Dyer at WISE back in '64-'65 -- Anybody with any info on Stan the Man please contact me at [email protected] --- Thanks so much -- John Snook
