WLPA Changes

Northeast Radio Watch reports 1490 WLPA has changed to Fox Sports plus a simulcast of all newscasts from TV channel 8. What brought this change? What sports programming were they running before? Does this have anything to do with the recent changes to WLAN?

WLPA is (was?) running Sporting News radio, and they've always simulcasted some of the WGAL newscasts. I would assume that if the are changing (changed?) they would continue to broadcast the Phillies and Barnstormers games.

WLPA will switch to Fox Sports Radio in July from Sporting News Radio. They will continue to simulcast the 6am, 6pm and 11pm channel 8 news on weekdays as they have done for years. They will also continue to do a full schedule of Phillies games, selected Lancaster Barnstormer games and will add the Baltimore Ravens to their line up of sports coverage.

Surprised people in the market prefer Fox Sports. Sporting News has, by far, a more professional and more thorough lineup.

And I'm surprised that Clear Channel/Premiere permitted 1490 to pick up Fox Sports, in the event that one of their other stations nearby may eventually wanna flip to sports.

And 1490 has always aired Channel 8's newscasts, going back to the days when 1490 was WGAL(AM) and the stations were all owned by the Steinmans.

Gee, if people in the marketplace prefered Fox Sports Radio over SNR, then why would WLAN have dropped it for Timeless Classics (otherwise known as the station only my grandparents are listening to)?

My grandparents have been dead for years and THEY listen to WLAN regularly.<P ID="signature">______________

It's quite simple; the Fox product is far superior, and the brand alone makes it worthwhile. WLAN's problem was that there was already a sports station serving a small segment of the market. Look at the ratings of the top-100 markets and you will see that most sports stations are a 1-share at best. The WRKO, WIP, and WFANs of the world are few and far between. Even markets with major league teams have sports stations that perform rather poorly. This is a great move for them!

Actually, now that i think about it, it will be nice to not have to hear Tim "listen as I drop another name" Brando.

ESPN's sports radio programming is also very good.

The Fox product is horrible. Many of their shows are trainwrecks. About the only shows I can stomach are Rome and Chris Myers in PM drive. JT The Brick has to be one of the most annoying air personalities ever.

That being said, you were right ... WLAN was fighting an uphill battle. WIP rates in the Lancaster book, in addition to WLPA. And WFAN's got a decent signal into parts of Lancaster County. And 1350/1600 cover the county well, too.

I'm just surprised Clear Channel/Premiere would allow the overlap with 1460. The whole idea of the 1460 signal upgrade was ostensibly to give 1460 a better signal in Lancaster and have it rate in the Lancaster book (signal still is shady there, but that's another story for another time). If 1490 is running the game product on a local signal, 1460 won't get any listeners.

WLPA switches from Sporting News Radio to Fox Sports Radio. The effects of that bombshell are felt from Manheim Township all the way to a very small village just outside Manheim Township. It's amazing that this move was made without someone speculating that "Jack" had something to do with it. At any rate, I'm certain that the Tuesday crowd at Root's Country Market will enjoy the mumbling of Van Earl Wright and his evident disdain for co-host Andrew Siciliano. Worst chemistry since Fen-Phen. But FSR's morning show, hosted by Steve Czaban, is underrated. More intelligent radio you'll rarely find. Obviously, the thing to do now is to move Sporting News Radio to 106.7 FM (immediately tripling the current ratings), switch 102.3 to Cool Pop's "format" (which can't possibly hurt as RED's jockless shifts outrate the live ones), and help correct the local oversaturation of country music (which benefits not only the market, but the nation).

And as for the Ravens, WSBA already carries them. Someone needs to pick up the Steelers.

Dumbest decision I have ever seen..

FSR is in shambles right now...their programming sucks....Van earl is a complete disaster....afternoons, a disaster.....etc, etc

SNR will begin to rise shortly once the Tony Bruno show begins syndication to the SNR affiliates..and once they hire Kiley/Booms to replace the worst morning/afternoon programming in the world (even worse than FSR)....this will all take place shortly....they should have been patient....what a joke....

Thankfully the Lancaster listeners get to avoid the Van Earl Wright dreck thanks to WLPA and Bloomberg news.
