WLRS-HOT P

Why do you think someone needs to be disgruntled or fired to think the station and staff are substandard? I'm neither. I don't like Big Joe, and I am just one of many who feel that way. He makes it difficult for others around him to succeed. He's unprofessional and is only out for himself. That is just fact. I left RO on my own accord and now gainfully employed in a much more profitable situation at another radio company in town. Simple as that. I am finally making money. I still have friends in that building and there is not a lot of respect for Joe or anyone else involved with wlrs. Apparently, the Louisville community agrees with me. Look at the ratings, they say it all.

Indydood or anyone else...post some proof that you have or have ever had a real radio show and then you can talk - btw college station and anything with a www. in front of it DOES NOT QUALIFY! Grow up kids and let's talk radio!

:D Just because you don't agree with us we must not have ever done REAL radio? That's a laugher.

25 years in the biz...........everything from board-op to on-air personality, programmer and consultant. "Grow up"? YOU grow up, please.

Indydood - I'll take your "everything" job description to mean "not in radio anymore", and it's not that i disagree with your thoughts. I just think it's really easy to hide behind your alias while working your little desk job and send out personal attacks. I am really amazed at the absolute obsession with a radio station (WLRS) that everyone agrees is a (bad signal) (bad ratings performer), but You and hot PATRICK will not let a posting go by without bringing it up...must be something there that is way personal. So I was just saying - if you want to attack - personally the PD - then pony up with the facts of what is really behind your venom! And, I see HOT P hasn't commented - maybe he's polishing his resume for the "volunteer grip" position he hopes to get in L.A. - I know he has no radio experience, just some "grip jobs" in L.A. for a resume! So why is he talking programming on this board? ???

Know-it-all what is your problem dude i will talk about what i want to whether you like it or not.I will talk ratings programming whatever it really is none of your business what i choose to post. You are obviously a very bitter man about something and what you have against me or indydood is beyond me. You obviously have anger issues with your rude posts. Your very arrogant also obviously you did not succeed at radio.

I never started the WLRS conversation. I have little to be *obsessed* about concerning them and, if you check the date stamps, I don't post about them anything close to every day. I am indeed still in radio and have a pretty good feeling I'll still be doing radio long after you've washed out of the biz.

Dude, haven't you heard? They pull in up to $3 million per year on that station. ::)

They must operate a group of local gas stations ;D

Follow along, SLOWLY now............. :D

greg.hahn jokes about WLRS pulling in up to $3m-yr (which is VERY laughable)

indydood then jokes back that (WITH GAS OVER $ A GALLON) they must generate that pumping gas

It's called radio doods havin' a little fun

I think Know-it-all asked a fair question. If you read thru the posts it does seem like a few of you have an outstanding hate for WLRS. I understand not liking a station but you do resort to low down dirty personal attacks like you are running for a public office in politics. And like a typical politition you try to spin it and make Know-it-all the bad guy for asking the question. A question you have yet to answer yourself. You get your info from one or two EX WLRS Staff and think their point of view is the only one. There are two sides to every story folks. I knew Annrea very well and she had some MAJOR issues. I wish her well in Cali but she was not a good PD here in Louisville. So again I ask.... what is the personal hate for WLRS? anyone want to give us facts? Personal stories? Anything?

Clearly, the stories have been told. WLRS was a very hard station to make any money at. The product was bad and the APD or PD or whatever Joe calls himself made it difficult for anyone to succeed. Skinny J should know more than anyone that Joe is not about the success of others, he is all about himself. I saw that someone had written his "story" of wlrs, which I thought was amusing and I shared my experience in the building. Lord of Rock, Skinny J, whatever your name is, you know the truth. And Know it all, or Big Joe, you know what you are all about. Have a good weekend.

I was downtown last weekend and thought I'd punch up 105.1 after seeing the billboard on I-64. Now that they have moved the transmitter and gone directional over the city, it's much harder to hear them downtown. Moving up to Mitchell hill solved the shadowing problem in the south end, however having the null over Louisville is hurting them in the northern part and up into Indiana.

Radio one was looking for budget cutbacks that is the reason annrae and everyone else with talent for the most part got let go. The non talent left on wlrs is only there cause they don't make all that much to speak of okay skinny j is not a bad jock but he is horrible in the mornings and joe well the sooner he and diesel are off the radio airwaves in louisville the better off wlrs will be.No ifs ands or buts!!!

That makes sense that the south end improved, which was no doubt critical for them and made it "worth it". But the cost to them in general signal coverage is worse than most people realize.

You know this, Scott, but most other people don't. When you have a normal antenna, the pattern distortion that the tower causes can be used for the advantage of the station. If you are licensed as 3 KW, and put your antenna on the side of a tower, you automatically may have 4.5 KW on the antenna side of the tower and 1.5 KW in the opposite direction. To the FCC, that all balances out overall and they are fine with it. So if you are south of the city, you put your antenna on the north side of the tower.

But the FCC also lets you "optimize" your antenna. This is a means of adding directional elements near the antenna to balance out the vertical and horizontal radiation characteristics to make them about the same. That helps a lot in the multipath. But it also can create a huge "push" in one direction.

But with a directional antenna, you aren't allowed to exceed the licensed value at all in any direction.

The old LRS had an optimized antenna on a special tower section that is tuned to 105.1 to maximize the radiation toward Louisville. They were licensed as 3KW, but you can bet that they were radiating a full 6KW toward the city.

The new LRS is a 6KW at 100 meters equivalent. But they have a directional null of 0.58 field toward St Matthews. That's about 1600 watts. That's the best case scenario. In real life when they made the antenna, they did a pattern study and tried all kinds of things to make it as good as they could get it. They probably didn't get their 1600 watts toward St Matthews. If they are lucky, they got 1200.

Their null starts at 340 degrees, almost northwest, to 70 degrees, almost east, with the minima at 40 degrees being 0.58. They cannot exceed the licensed value at any point along the 360 degree circle. If real life makes it less than theoretical, well then it's just less. And with directional FMs, real life ALWAYS interferes with theory.

So the bottom line is this: LRS went from a 3KW station to a 6KW station, but in the process lost a legal "cheat" they had on their old antenna. They lost their terrain shading, which is the best thing that happened to them. But they went down to about 1/4 of the power they used to radiate toward Louisville. It's definitely a mixed bag.

The fox 93.1 signal is under an upgrade do not know when that will be done though.

That will probably happen pretty quickly. Almost for sure befor the fall book, and probably a lot sooner.

They are almost doubling their power. They have specified a new antenna height, slightly lower, but it doesn't look like they are changing their antenna. They probably just found an alternate means of computing height above average terrain and leaving the antenna the way it is.

They will need a new transmitter, and maybe some significant electrical work.

The signal was upgraded a couple of weeks ago. I don't know all the details. We have now gone from a pee shooter to a bee bee gun. :) The signal seems to be pretty solid over the metro area. Some holes were filled in a little better. I don't think they're completely finished with their work at the transmitter site or with the audio processing.

Well when are you ever finished with your work at the transmitter site, or with the audio processing? :D

Congrats on the upgrade. Um... they have ten days to notify the FCC that they are operating under the new parameters.
