I just read on All Access that in Chicago, WLS-AM is having their own "Rewind" (Unlike WABC's "Rewound") show on Memorial Day, and I Quote from the article:

"Following sister WABC-A/NEW YORK's lead, ABC Talk WLS-A/CHICAGO will bring back the music on MEMORIAL DAY for an all-day special, "BIG 89 REWIND," recalling the station's Top 40 glory days, according to the CHICAGO SUN-TIMES' ROBERT FEDER.

Keep in mind, this isn't Old Airchecks being played, this looks like the real deal! Looks like this whole Rewound thing is begining to catch on.

I'm all for this and think it is great, but I can't help but think it is no coincidence that this happens right as their FM, 94.7 (the former WLS-FM at that) enjoys the most success that signal may have ever had (after 30+ years of copycat formats) by picking up where WLS left off muscially and continuing with the oldies format.

Recently, John Landecker has been using portions of the old WLS jingles on his show, such as "Radar Weather Eye...." and others, which is a nice touch. I'll be listening to WLS for this, but I gotta believe there will be some degree of cross-promotion for 94.7.
 
This was in the works long before WZZN flipped. PD Kipper McGee tried to launch this two years ago when he first slipped into the open role, but couldn't get it organized in time. Can't wait to hear it. I'm sure it will be a labor of love from Kipper and Jeff Davis.
 
They did something like this Fourth of July 1999. They ran unscoped airchecks most of the day. Much of the material was from early 1974 but there were moments from the sixties and late seventies.

WLS streams online, so if anything, you can just grab it as it runs...
 
2 reasons I won't listen online:

1) I wish but I can't listen from 5am-Midnight or even record that long.
2) Maybe it's just me but I think the "over the airwaves" sound will be much better.

Yeah, the three WLS streams are all low bitrate. I plan to record the stream, but I do hope someone in the Chicago area will record it off air and post it over on the aircheck collectors board. BTW, are they still running C-Quam stereo? Last time I checked they still were, but that was awhile ago.

And... isn't WLS still in AM STEREO? It was around Christmas last year! If someone can get an AM stereo recording you get extra credit, your name in lights, etc on the website!
 
WLS has dropped C-QUAM during the day and is transmitting IBUG. I note that they have been ( in the last several months) switching back to C-QUAM at night (stereo pilot on) but I have not noted anything that could be stereo (like commercials) being reproduced that way. I think they take any potential stereo product and mono sum it somewhere in the chain. That is kinda sad 'cause even with their local talk shows they could at least 'pan' the mics and have the bumper music in stereo. That would give a little "dimensionality" to them. A little thing, to be sure, but it would enhance...and make for all the better listening to a station with an exceptional history of great 'air product'.

Maybe I am an even bigger idiot than I already think I am but is anyone else having a hard time remembering just when the heck Tom Kent was part of the WLS air staff? I'm sure he was there but I don't remember it. Someone have the dates?

Should be fun to listen to anyhow.
 
Tom Kent is not in my memories of WLS, either. I see his airchecks on reelradio.com but don't remember exactly the dates when he was there.

I was hoping Steve King (WGN) would be there, too.
 
Too cool -- "listen for the touchtones to win". They will be using them to give away stuff!

I'm not sure what you're using as a standard for success, but WZZN-FM (94.7) is currently #19 25-54 in Chicago. The lame presentation of Oldies on WJMK did better than that.
 
During my hour drive to work at 3:00 AM, I occassionaly listen to Steve King and his wife, Johnnie Putnam, on WGN. While I'm not a constant listener to their show, I do enjoy most of their conversations.

I know Steve King was on WLS, currently on WGN, and, in the past, WIND. Any other stations that he has been on in Chicago?

While it won't happen, it would be great if they moved all the talk shows to the 94.7 frequency, and moved the oldies format back to The Big 89.
