WLS-AM TO HAVE "REWOUND" DAY ON MEMORIAL DAY!

what the hell? this aint music. its snipets. its just talk radio. they are just going tru bands and having band members talk.

Do NOT miss the WLS Rewound. Listening here after the stream dumped shortly after the program started, but it came back halfway through the music montage. Lujack and Edwards never sounded better. Great quality and even better memories. AM never ever sounded so good ... even online. Enjoy.

Diggin' it here in Naples over the internet! The mp3 version (mono) connected fine. So far, no dropouts...
Way cool!!!!

Listening live on 890am from Grand Rapids, MI, about 130 miles from Tinley Park, IL (transmitter).

Lujack has never sounded better. The bit about being on WVON 1690 (where he was canned with Lil Tommy last year) was hilarious! Wondering when to switch to hear WABC's Rewind...but this is too good. Nice tribute to Gary Gears and Kris Eric Stevens, too. More to come...how far radio's come since those days. "Act of Random Kindness" and "Animal Stories" today were laugh-out-loud, as were "Tips for You Young Broadcasters" (in Latvia, no less.) Sure miss this kind of radio.

Listening in Dallas and I have to say, there is no reason why Lujack, who is obviously doing it from his home in Arizona, couldn't be on the air every day. Surely someone could find a place for him. IF he wants to.

Don't know what happened to the stream at the start, but I should be trapping the wm stream into adobe audition at home while I'm at work...hoping to get the majority of the day. I do think I missed the Jeff Davis produced montage from 5 - 6 tho. Might need some help getting that from someone here ! lemme know if I can help with any of the audio that youse guys want !

It's great to listen to "The Big 89 Rewound" from Chicago's WLS. I grew up listening to WLS practically every night from September, 1968 until the end of the Musicradio days. Even here in the Boston area, that killer signal from Tinley Park, IL was faithfully available after sunset. It's nice to know that WLS still remembers its' roots. Welcome home to "The Big 89"!

I can't help noticing that, like the cicadas, Ol' Uncle Lar resurfaces every 17 years....

I've been listening to the stream since just before 6am and it has been rock solid....as rock solid as the yucks and the memories. Larry Lujack and Little Tommy sounded a whole lot better than they did when they were on 1690.
Fred Winston's still got it, too. He popped in during Lujack and Edwards' gig...as Les Grobstein was doing his humorless sports geek act....Fred had been in the room for, maybe, 12 seconds, and he slipped in between The Grobber's sports trivia and deadpanned, "how long did it take before he got on your nerves?"

Thanks, Kipper

I'm listening at about 10:00 with Fred Winston on. The show's sounding really good! As many of you, I grew up listening to WLS in (primarily) the 70's.

Kudos to WLS for doing this rewind! :D

I flew into Cincinnati yesterday with my permitted carry-on stuffed with a Tivoli “Kloss” analog-tuned “(wider)-band” table radio; the required Terk AM loop antenna; and a C Crane CCPlus – headed for my southeast Indiana boyhood home [where I enjoyed “The Big 89” religiously the first-time around]. From over 250-miles – WHAT A TREAT – “superhet”, adjacent-channel splatter, and all! Yes, I could have listened via the net; but it wouldn’t have been the same! Like Lujack once said: “For those who like a little snap, crackle, and pop with their rock.” I arose this morning to ‘Ole Uncle Lair fondly recalling his heart attack: “There I was lying ready for them to have-at my chest with a power saw... I think it was a Toro...” HILLARIOUS! Tommy and Lair were in classic form – with little resemblance to their “obligatory” former performance on 1690 – which Lujack panned at his usual sarcastic best: “I shouted as loud as I could into that microphone, trying to be heard over all the static.”

In nearly TWO DECADES, I cannot recall enjoying a “radio event” more (so far). I’m firing up the grill with Fred Winston as a companion – C Crane blaring on the deck... Upstairs, the Tivoli plays in my boyhood bedroom, on the nightstand where that long-departed GE tube-type radio first tuned WLS in the late 60s. What wonderful people, awesome music, and a day of heart-warming memories – all in 5 kHz monophonic sound... Weren’t the “simpler times” just great – especially for “radio”! THANK YOU to “The Enormous 89” for giving us the enjoyment of remembering :)

Big 89? How about HUMONGOUS 89?! The stream was tough in the beginning, but though I never grew up in Chi-town, I have read and heard so much about WLS as a music powerhouse. WABC originated this thing with Rewound--but for the most part it's been recorded. What WLS did was find their legendary DJ's and personalities. It's like a recreation of radio history--even down to the newscasts, using the Contemporary sounder for news mixing it in with the old school sports sounder and the current WLS traffic sounder. Also, during the stream, I didn't hear any ABC News on the hour.

I tuned in and heard the album version of Billy Joel's My Life--NEVER HEARD IF EVER on AM Radio.

I noticed no reverb unlike WABC, where they went out the door with it. Only thing is I am closer to WABC here in CT, yet I have interference. You know, if this were to be a big hit for WLS, and depending on what Citadel does with ABC, this could lead to what WABC does Saturday Nights.

I have to say, WELL DONE WLS AND ABC! And I'll be tuning in again on the stream after 6:00 PM EDT (5:00) when WABC ends their music. And I'll be checking out the Boogie Check with John Records Landecker--and yes RECORDS IS HIS MIDDLE NAME!

Wonder if any young people are checking this out? Maybe some nudging by their parents who GREW UP with WLS are making them listen.

And I hope 890 AM can come in here in CT so I can get the real feel.

Listening online to 'LS play "Come Sail Away" by Styx. Gawd at the memories! Great entertainment as I fire up the grill. Enjoying this today like my other radio brethren. Kinda sad when Fred signed off saying, "hope to see you sometime." Anyone know if he's on air anywhere?

In any case, I'll be heading to the car after sundown to see if I can get the full effect (with static-ha!) Best to all.

I just read on All Access that in Chicago, WLS-AM is having their own "Rewind" (Unlike WABC's "Rewound") show on Memorial Day, and I Quote from the article:

"Following sister WABC-A/NEW YORK's lead, ABC Talk WLS-A/CHICAGO will bring back the music on MEMORIAL DAY for an all-day special, "BIG 89 REWIND," recalling the station's Top 40 glory days, according to the CHICAGO SUN-TIMES' ROBERT FEDER.

[EDIT]

Keep in mind, this isn't Old Airchecks being played, this looks like the real deal! Looks like this whole Rewound thing is begining to catch on.

3 days to go until Citadel takes control of 22 ABC stations.

got home to catch the final 1 1/2 hours of jef davis :) this is so cool! i wish this was daily :( if wls was around now i wouldnt listen to so much sat radio ;D i got the first 6 hours on tape. now i will have form 4:30 to 10:30pm. i can record the final 1 1/2 on a 90 min cassette. but i still need the aircheck from 11 am to 4:30..i was at work and missed it :(

As I listen to the bombastic beginning of the John "Records" Landecker show, I am reminded of how important the night guy was to Top 40 radio, especially the big 50kw muthas. All my career I wanted to be such a jock. While I had a great run, I never got to do that. But, Thank you John "Records" Landecker, and the others like you, for the excitement, the inspiration... and the memories.

Whatr as treat this is!!!
I do miss music AM's.

wow this stream is about 5 minutes behing the am signal!! i finally got my cc radio plus to get a signal. even though its very weak! turned on the stream again because of that fact and it was what i was hearing 5 minutes earlier? why the huge delay? also i am glad i caught all of this on tape. so i can listen again and relive all this again! i never thought this would happen again! but i want listen to talk radio wls. it just doesnt seem right to have talk on 890 AM!

I'm listening to WLS and John records landecker in Ottawa Canada..signal is perfect as always and I'm not using anything special to hear the station...makes me remember that I was lucky growing up with top 40 AM radio. We were lucky in Canada to have it well into the 90's. I did listen to WLS as a teen at the end of the music radio years...the mid to late 80's. This has to be the best idea any station has had in a long time. More stations need to pay homage to their ro0ts

The fact that WLS did "Rewind" with live personalities and not airchecks (like WABC) was impressive, from Lujack and Edwards to a live "Boogie Check" with Landecker. Everything throughout the day was true "Class Action" (and still the best jingle package WLS ever had, IMHO. Ok, "Rock of Chicago" was a close second...)
