WLS-AM TO HAVE "REWOUND" DAY ON MEMORIAL DAY!

WLS has done a great job with this, obviously rewound on sister WABC influenced their decision to do this..perhaps they will be influenced to do a Saturday night oldies show like WABC.

Due to time restraints, only caught bits and pieces over the web today. Overall, a nice balanced presentation. Would have liked to hear a little more interaction between the talents, stories, etc, and less "jocking over ramps"...but still fun and a nice reminiscent trip back. Perhaps I missed the juicer parts...would love to hear a condensed highlight version!

27 years ago, while trying to DX WWL, I laid in my bed in Lompoc California and listened to Tom Kent give away a pair of Jordache Jeans on WLS. And now as I sit my car in Panama City Florida and listen to the Mexican skip overlap the Big 89 Tom Kent is once again bringing back
to the reason I got into this crazy business. :)

i have 16 hours of it ;D

LANDECKER

A grrrrreat show from 'RECORDS'! He's STILL GOT IT!
:)

.and even a 'BOOGIE CHECK' - one that hasn't aired LIVE since 1979!

...DID however miss the beginning of Lujack and Winston's shows - (dag nab it!)

If anyone can whip up 2 'scoped' low-bitrate MP3's of the two show's FIRST 20 minutes only
and send them over via e-mail, that would be super:

They are supposed to have the Jeff Davis memorial kick off available on PodCast....the stream died at my PC this morning yet AudioGrabber was up and recording at 4:55 (got a little bit before the stream choked at 5)....Been recording and listening since 7am CT this morning...right now, Doobies are playing "Listen to the Music" GAWD it sounds great...switched to Audacity in 16k mono rate.....(yes it sounds like AM on the stream...but hell, isnt that the whole idea??) ALL the great DJs never sounded better....have been trying to get in when they play the TouchTones....but all I get is "ALL circuits are busy" I bet the Telco choke lines never got this locked up before ;) I can see a new "Rewind" format coming....goodbye Jack, Hello Rewind?????

Well WABC has started the ball rolling in recent years...but you could say WLS took it and ran with it...studio lines were jammed...I say Saturday night show with Tom Kent as host...

REBROADCASTS OVERNIGHT?

Just heard (online) the 2pm hour of Chris Shebel's show starting right after the midnight news switch...

Wonder if they're gonna continue all night with reruns?...

Fantastic job!
This just shows you that radio can be much more than computer-generated playlists and liner notes.

I had planned to listen to the show on my Grundig portable radio but I finally went and grabbed the streaming....I have 2 tracks of part of the last hour of Landecker that includes the Boogiecheck, which was incredibly funny! John was popping zingers at the callers!

I will now wait and see where I can find a complete copy of all the hours. I saw where Smashed CD said he had all of it.

Please send me a private note and tell me where you plan to keep it or if there is a possiblilty of getting a complete copy -- Yes, I'll pay a little if need be.

Thanks!!!! :)

Man, that was fun wasn't it? I liked the way they were playing some of the crappy top 40 tunes I haven't heard in years (Andy Gibb, Hughes Corporation, etc.) Just goes to show how little personality many stations have today. These guys could give time, temp, signal and a joke on a song intro and you knew the DJ's personality. Ah, the memories of my youth.....

Man, what a trip! "Boogie Check, Boogie Check ooooh ahhhh!". John Records Landecker still has it! I can't believe that it's been over 27 years since the last "Boogie Check". I was listening to the WLS Rewind all day long. It was hard to turn it off while having to go to do the errands (damn!). I stayed with it until 1:00 AM (our time here in Boston). For s**ts and giggles, I tried to listen to 890 direct. It actually was able to get through over the local 890 (WAMG/Dedham, MA) for a short amount of time. If the local "Johnny Come Lately" 890 station were not there, I would have had no problem listening to WLS directly. But thankfully, the streaming was there. I hope we'll have another chance to have another WLS Rewind in the future. To all of the crew of today's WLS and the WLS Alumni, I want to say, THANK YOU for a job well done!

All the best,

There are people who recorded it popping up on the net now.

Great day of radio.

WLS was able to pull it off because Kipper worked his ass off to make it happen.

Will it happen again?

Not under Citadel. One of their main managers continually refers to oldies as a "dead format".

Hope everyone enjoyed the reunion because it's probably never going to happen again - at least under Citadel.

PS - Citadel will likely have WZZN under a microscope for the next year until they decide if it's worth keeping.

I heard this from a friend yesterday;
Re; Landecker

In the late-'60's/early '70's, WIBG's John Records Landecker was going head-on with WFIL's George Michael.

Landecker's "Boogie Check" was killing George Michael's 7PM-10PM audience. Jay Cook, WFIL's PD and former music director and mid-day wizard, decided to do something about it.

Jay had his WFIL dj's write letters to WIBG's Landecker, telling John how great they thought his "boogie check" segment was and how much better it might be if it were just a little longer.

Of course, the segment got a little longer. Another round of letters and "boogie check" got longer yet.

The letters continued...

All this stunt had to do was work for what was then a four-week Arbitron rating period, and it did. Landecker was playing phone calls and George Michael was playing the hits. Guess who won the Book?

WFIL, with a vastly inferior signal, won the Top 40 battle

Where are you seeing people on the net with airchecks of Rewind? I Googled WLS Rewind and can't find anything.

BTW, I pulled out my AM stereo Walkman to hear the last couple hours ot the show. Sounded great. They're stil running C-Quam and haven't succumbed to the IBOC virus.

I caught some of Landecker over the air, after WRFD on 880 sigtned off and the ionosphere kicked in. Can't say anything but GREAT...the interaction with newsman Gil Gross and the nice tribute to Yvonne Daniels. Boogie Check was something else!

I think it just might be back..its great promotion for the station one day a year...hardly an "oldies" format.
