WLS - The Big 89 ( Rumors )

I think this all started on the Cincy board when WLW-based talk host Bill Cunningham, who took over Matt Drudge's Sunday night national show made a comment about WLS dropping his show, and apparently said something about that making WLS go dark. Cunningham regularly got "suspended" by the fictional "Helen Mays" every time he went on vacation, to the point people were calling CC in San Antonio demanding to speak with this person who didn't exist. Nothing to see here.

That explains alot of things

Time to bring back MusicRadio 89...Landecker, Lujack, Winston, etc. Less talk and more rock!

Funny I just had lunch with Gehron and we were talking about the same thing. It'll never happen, but what it would do is something we can all dream about

Yup, dreaming is all we'll ever do about this idea.

Parent company filing Chapter XI... possible.
Sale to Bonneville (or other unnamed suitor)... possible.
Staff cutbacks or more syndicated programming... possible.
These rumors coming from across the street or down the dial (I'd look somewhere between 710 and 730)... possible.
Going dark.... HIGHLY IMPROBABLE.

The big 89 is going to stay on the air,,, dont know if the owners are gonna change, or the format, but I cant see the calls changing,,, ever........ And it wont go dark,,, someone will buy it, or it will be auctioned off. Oh,, and it will remain at least some sort or talk-news format,,, no one listens to am for music anymore, and every market has local top 40 stations, and rock and classic hits stations, there is no need for a power house am to play music for the whole world these days, especially, with the internet streaming stations and sat radio and all that. Would be cool to have music on the freq again, but it will never happen, I dont even think Radio Disney would occupy that freq..

I listen to music on AM. I think it would be great to take the station to classical and jazz, with perhaps some intelligent talk (a la Milt Rosenberg) sprinkled in.

A great city deserves great art... and great music as well.

classical and jazz both need superior sound quality and processing,, Am cant deliver that....... chicago is a great city,, the radio stations here arent that bad,, alot of cities have alot worse....

How about Energy 890..........hahahahahahahahahahaha

What kind of music would WLS Am play now days if it was still music radio. Would it be oldies like WLS Fm,, would it be current top 40 like b-96 and Kiss,, would it be like 70s and 80s. It would be hard to say what WLS would be if it was still music, but in reality we all know music will never be heard on 89 again except for the intros to talk shows. It is sad, but at least you have true oldies on Fm with the WLS calls... Sure you cant hear it in Texas, but stations dont care about out of market listeners and dxers anymore. its the sad reality of radio in this age. maybe an internet only tribute site with the music of the 60s through the 80s with the old jingles could be all we can hope for,, the big 89 rewind 24/7,,,, one of you guys should do that.

Here is a crazy idea - Radio Disney. They are playing much more top-40 than they used to, and it is quite listenable as a format if you don't mind Disney artists thrown in.

you think Randy Michaels at Journal started this non sense rumor? give it up, it is all ridiculous.

WLS as a talk station is doing better thatn some of the other talk stations that Cidadel has. Don't know why this rumor was even started. Don't look for a format chang either anytime soon.. The won't beat WGN, but they are not going away either.

Radio Disney on 890 would be OK with me if they would shut off the IBOC and broadcast with decent audio bandwidth (preferably in CQUAM). But I don't think that will ever happen; Citadel isn't likely to air Disney are they?

Radio Disney is currently on a miserable frequency for most of the north and western suburbs. You can hardly hear the station for the co-channel interference at night, and it's none too strong in the daytime because they have to protect Grand Rapids, also on 1300. I used to listen before they turned on IBOC but now it sounds so bad with that tin-can audio. I just can't stand it. It beats me why any kid would even want to listen to such poor quality sound.

I Say just make it a simulcast of the FM if they do decide to kill the talk. Wouldn't cost them much more. and it would cut back on the electric bill slightly.

then we could hear true oldies In Dallas : )

Sounds like WFMT-AM. Not a bad idea, actually. Bring out all the old Studs Terkel tapes.

WLS CQuam was awesome in the late 80's - I lived 200 miles away in Jackson, MI, and it sounded almost local, perfect stereo in my car and at home.

Our local Radio Disney in Houston is also on an awful frequency, not receivable at night. We have to listen to the Denver or Dallas outlet at night.
