Well, this topic has gone off the rails, hasn't it?
I'm not a radio guy, I'm a listener. And I have two observations:
First, about rimshots... If my local blowtorch goes to yammering car commercials, I'll rifle through the presets. If nothing but garbage comes from this, I hit seek. If I stop on a station playing a song I like... I will listen. My few friends (who listen to the radio) do that, my parents do that and I bet a lot of average listeners do that as well. If I like what I hear and the signal's not bad, it gets a preset. Heck, that's how my mom discovered Birmingham rimshot WHPH "The Peach", doing oldies from two counties away, way outside their target coverage area. I discovered Tuscaloosa's public radio station that way, as well as "101.1 The Spot", a Cullman station that targeted Birmingham many years ago. Oh and Alabama 810 from Jacksonville, with their homey style and classic country deep cuts
!
It's not DX, it's not a silly hobby and it's not a bunch of nerds I'm talking about. Average folks.
Second... As Mike can attest, we country folk practically depend on "DX" to listen to the radio. If I were relegated to my absolute most locals, the ones who cover my entire town with a 60 dBu contour (no local AM), I'd be stuck with just 5 different formats, including religious and public radio. None of those stations do fully local programming; most are 22/7 satellite or more.
Going by what my radio will pick up decently (not always full quieting, staticy but listenable on AM) that increases to 15 formats. It's kinda irrelevent to HD, but 3x more choices by rimshots sounds pretty good to me. Hey, there's only one country station for my town, but I got five "total" choices according to the ol' seek button. The "stations between the stations" will offer unique formats to start, but they can't replace those "same as but different" rimshots... I.E. real choices...
My 2¢
