WLTJ flips to Hot AC

Well according to yes.com WLTJ played Pat Benatar in the 7:00 hour and continues its urban a/c programming at night. Sounds like the format wheel should be spinning again. Sorry, but in 2009 a hot a/c should not be playing Pat Benatar or Heart. The only good thing about Q92.9 - be it hot a/c or a/c - is the lack of christmas music on its playlist. It is a decent alternative to WISH or 3WS while they dump their format for the almighty ad $$$.

Umm, I just looked at the last 25 songs played, and I don't see any difference from what they have been playing. I agree w/ Jkf, Abracadabra (or anything by Steve Miller) is hardly what I consider "hot."

I did notice Q92.9 seems to have dropped all of the 70's music it was playing Not that there was much 70's music to begin with.

I hadn't listened for any significant time since they signed this on as Q92.9. I absolutely hated what they were doing then, it seemed like tons of Sara Barelles, Colby Callait and Taylor Swift. (Barelles' "Love Song" is still in one of the "this is Q music" sweepers.)

This is much better than what that was. It's 80's and 90's intensive, mostly rock based, a few interesting things like Clapton's "Change the World" and U2's "One." Hour openers, however, still include Whitney Houston's "Wanna Dance with Somebody", also still playing Soft Cell. Wnhen they played Bryan Adams it was "Summer of '69" and not one of his sappy ballads.

Personally I'd expect a Hot AC to be fairly current, and in 90 minutes only Kings of Leon and Rob Thomas fit that bill. So they have essentially positioned themselves between Star and WSHH.

Apparently they've been slowly evolving this, and they still have the female-specific imaging promos. (On an unrelated note, the promo for the Urban AC show at night was pretty good).

Personally I also think the clock is weird, with a long stopset at :05, but I guess that doesn't matter as much as it used to? We always used to try to sweep from the top of the hour into the second quarter-hour.

So would this pull my 44-year old wife away from Star and Bob-FM? I doubt it.

Sorry pt, but these are not interesting things. These are annoying overplayed things that kind of sucked when they came out and suck more now. :p

So is this going to be a Star clone? Great.

Eye of the beholder, I guess... for a station that played Kenny Nolan's "I Like Dreamin'', Air Supply and Barry Manilow when I worked there, they're interesting. I also happen really like Clapton and U2.

As OLD as the audience is in Pittsburgh a WDUV-clone playing the Barry Manilow, Carpenters, Air Supply, etc. mainstays would probably work. They should have attempted this instead of going up against WISH in the first place. Now, trying to call themselves HOT a/c?!? I just don't get it. 5:00 hour today according to yes.com - Heart's What About Love AGAIN. Fleetwood Mac's Little Lies. This is NOT HOT A/C people! It's almost as if they are trying to blur the difference between them and BOB. But why? Throw in some of the typical BOB researched songs (any overplayed 70s rock) and you have a mirrored playlist to THEIR OWN STATION. Proof that it's just not the Clear Channels and CBS's that have no clue as to what they are doing.

I don't care what you get 12+, if the demos are too old you can't sell it. The big money comes from out-of-town agencies in a lot of cases and they buy 25-54. If the old demos were OK they would never have evolved from what they were in the 90's. Their 12+ has never changed that much but they needed to try and get younger.

Musically the hole in the market is for something more rhythmic.

That's the same question I was about to ask. And at this rate one gets the feeling that Pittsburgh will never see one anytime soon.

Who said they were going to hot AC? I'm listening online right now and according to the playlist, it's still the same as before. This isn't hot AC - it's what's called "bright AC" - the music mix in between hot and soft AC. Everyone's so wrong here.

When I was there in 1985 they were more of a "HOT AC" - WPNT before they got rid of the "HOT" and went to the Lite FM. ???

But they held with that for over 20 years so I guess you can't fault that strategy.

they call that hot ac? i don't notice any difference, but then again, that whole new q thing aint my bag. let's face it, who listens to the radio for music anymore? i never thought i'd ask that question. for the love of god they should ditch those cornball automated back announces!!!!!!

Even with the music tweak, the station just doesn't flow. I've heard the Q format, just like WLTJ in Knoxville, with country and loved it.

why do program directors and consultants insist on playing only the most familiar music and then turn around and play corn pone liners to remind everyone of the music they already know? It's more of a turn off than a service, get the hell rid of it and maybe it would work better....

I really hope this part of the question doesn't require a response; it's sort of like asking why ice cream vendors serve vanilla and
chocolate instead of Crunchy Frog and Lox Vomit.

On the "cornpone" backannounces, I tend to agree, but I would never presume that every member of the audience knows every
song on any given station.
