WLXN 1440 To Oldies - With 99.9 Simulcast

14 watts with a CP for 250. Are they operating under the CP?

Either way with summer around the corner unless you can see the tower you won't be hearing their morning show. East of High Point can enjoy sports talk while the west can enjoy country.

I think under the CP, but you are correct with the observation with summer coming!

I hear nothing in High Point as of 5 pm. Near the intersection of Penny Road and Eastchester. Will check my car radio on the way home

10 watts. 15 watts. 25 watts. Does it matter? It's still a very limited signal with no chance in hell of getting any listeners or advertisers.

It's like comparing high school football to the NFL!

Wavetraper I beg to differ. The signal may be small but I honestly believe they will pick up some small numbers and certainly some advertising. There is no oldies in the market, there is no station that focuses on Lexington / High Point / Thomasville, and certainly no station that is talking in the mornings and playing some great oldies! There is a fairly low expense factor here and it will improve the night time coverage for WLXN which has been a probelm for most AM stations for years. Think we need to salute Gig Hilton for having the gonans to give it a shot!

Small numbers means a small return. If advertisers can't actually hear the station they certainly won't buy it! You can't focus on small areas like Lexington/High Point/Thomasville and expect anyone to listen. The minute they travel out of these areas they're gone....you've got to have a decent signal to get decent numbers.

Gig Hilton had a goldmine when he first flipped it from that horrible "Hits" format and went oldies. He screwed it up by allowing Tom Collins to get more involved with the programming and music. Ask anyone that worked there.

Oh, I have no issues with the effort. More power to him (no pun intended). My point was that the a signal with less power than many ham radio stations is going to be too puny to reach the major population centers of our area. I can hear it in Lexington where I live and that's cool. 15 miles away, not so much.

And, the truly amazing thing is . . . he's back working for Gig! :D

WHAT??!! Are you freakin' serious??

Serious. Not sure what he's doing at WLXN, obviously not programming. Guess he had to go somewhere after being canned at WBRF.

This has FAIL written all over it then.
It's just a matter of the timing.
Maybe 16 months?

edit: I guess they have been more stable with the AM, though.
Maybe 24 months before a new format needs to be done?

That's very generous of you Quadraphonic! 16 months is a gift! A BIG gift! 10 months max.

I had an opportunity to try this station, though WBRF is so good I wasn't going to get many opportunities.

The first song was "Cats in the cradle". Not my taste, but I can deal with it. The next song was "Boys of Summer". Say what?

Okay, I know the song is about 30 years old. I just remember how good Majic was if I didn't have anything else.

I just wonder how much demand there is for this statio? Even my station runs commercials for Lexington businesses. Okay, it's a different type of oldies entirely ...

I heard a female that sounded like a kid on there this afternoon doing a local break? Maybe Gig's daughter!

I don't spend a lot of time with all of them, but I know them well enough to know all their names. ;D

If we're talking about Gig's daughter, he may have made a conscious effort to forget her name. :D

There are some local and live d.j.`s on WLXN and various times. This Sunday Afternoon there was an older man doing live spots (and giving the time and weather). He was playing all 1960`s music and giving the time and weather and talking some about a UNC Basketball game that was going to air.... It might have been Steve Finninigan??? I don`t know.... But, I have heard the younger girl live in weekday afternoons. One day she was talking about the Beatles. Is that really Gig`s daughter????
