WMEX

0.3 in the raiting...how do you make money with a 0.3?
Local sales. Especially independent businesses that are in your coverage signal coverage. Auto repair, used cars and "locally owned" new car dealerships. Locally owned HVAC, plumbers, etc

If you only cover half the market then a 0.3 is really 0.6 in your coverage area.

Whoever is their sales person(s) can't just sit in the office and wait for agency orders. The old time term was "beat the streets"..

Is WMEX really giving away $1000's of Dollars in this new promtion suppoedly starting on the 6th? $1000 x 4 times a day chances to win?! WHERE ARE THEY GETTING THE MONEY!?!!

I'm going to guess it might have something to do with the national network that runs the "SuperHits" '60s/'70s oldies/classic hits feed that WMEX is now running weekday mid-days and nights, and their live morning and afternoon drive DJ's are now (mostly) following the playlists of it.

Even many major top-rated commercial FM music stations nowadays run national money giveaway contests, the money is not necessarily from the local station running it. "Listen for your cue to call this (national) number..."

Interesting...But honestly, will it get more people to tune in?

So are all the DJ segments "Drop-in" prerecorded, or only some of them?

Russ on weekday morning drive and Ben on weekday afternoon drive, and Dave on Saturday afternoons, are still live and local. I don’t know whether they may voicetrack some breaks in advance or not, but at least they’re still local.
Jeff Lawrence pre-records his weekend countdown shows but he’s still local.

The weekday midday DJ “Bill Knight”, the evening DJ “Byrd”, and whoever’s on overnights after him are national voicetracked DJ’s on the national “Super Hits” ‘60s/‘70s classic hits/oldies channel aired on WMEX during those times.
Those DJ’s are not in this area, and can be heard on other “Super Hits” affiliates nationwide. Another station in New England running “Super Hits” where those national DJ’s are heard is WDEA Ellsworth, ME.

WMEX announced at 10 AM today that starting at midnight, they're switching to Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel feed. This will mean Scott Shannon will be on in the morning, and Russ and Ben will be on together in the afternoon.
Who the heck takes local away from the mornings - and apparently, Jeff Lawrence weekly countdown show is now airing twice rather than four times - one time on Saturday and once on Sunday. The Syndicated "Greatest Hits USA" is taking Sunday 6-9pm...perhaps the only national feed not from True Oldies....Dave Newfell is still on Satrudays...but I wonder for how long...and frankly, I don't expect Russ and Ben to still be around in 6 months...

It will be interesting if TOC works in Boston.
Define "works." Turns a profit? Does a 2.0-2.5 in 6+? Shows up at all in 25-54?

Shannon used to be carried up here in the Upper Valley on the 96.3/106.7 simulcast before the flip to Hot AC and, frankly, he sounded tired. His delivery had slowed way down and, in baseball terms, he definitely had lost a lot off his fastball. I can't imagine he's sounding much better two years later. Yes, he's a legend, but ...

Works I my definition is sales.

That's why I personally feel it could be interesting*. I don't believe he ever had a lot of exposure in Boston, at least not after Z100. IMHO the music will have to carry it. From what little I have heard it might work in 25 to 54.

Of course this could be payroll reduction, instead of programming improvement.

* If it really helps sales then I know of two stations that are just jukeboxes that really should think about this.

Someone is going to do a "national" network like David has mentioned other countries have. Cumulus, iHeart, and Audacy probably wouldn't carry each others stuff 24 / 7 like a true national would require. KLove is almost there but that's nonprofit.

*Both have good FM signals but are the lowest rated of their cluster. They are owned to keep serious competition out. KLove passed on them.

This is the fourth format in 3 months. In late February WMEX posted they were moving to music from the 70, 80s and 90s because the music of the 50s and 60s attracted a limited audience. Then they added 60s 2-3 times an hour to placate old listeners.

Then suddenly they changed to all 60s and 70s with emphasis from mid 60s on. I really liked the song mix but the voiced tracked DJs were terrible.
Now they have Scott Shannon voice tracked for 9 hours every weekday. Nine hours and they are playing 50s songs again. What happened to expanding the audience? Aren’t they going backwards to a format which has demonstrated to be unprofitable. It makes no sense to me.

Thry paired Ben and Russ together but only Ben is talking and there is absolutely no show prep or banter between the two. Russ doesn't do anything. What was the point? They still advertise they are live and local. Four hours a day is that. If you want to pay local DJs then put Russ in middays so we don’t hear Scott for 9 hours. The music selection is bad and I don’t listen much now.
I did like the 60s/70s format due to the good song selection and mix. No early 60s.
Can anyone explain how this latest format will be profitable? Thanks.
