Anyone remember when wmgi was a dance chr in 95-97,, that was may favorite mix fm era.

They were best playing hard rock as WVTS in the 70's. Think they were even in quad for awhile...now those were the days. I never liked anything they ever did after that.

If I remember right, they had a Pamela Steele or Alison Steele DJ that had a killer voice...don't know if that was a network thing or local.

I remember when WVTS had the moniker, "The Hot One" I'm gonna date myself but as a kid I remember when they played ellivator music and when they made the change after wthi did my old man got thought I changed his radio station. It took me several minutes to convince him I didn't touch his radio!

is the tower still in west terre haute, the site of the old VTS?

Yes, WMGI has been at that site since it was first on the air.

I worked at WVTS from March 1977 until May 1980 and the station's format was soft rock. Bob Rouse was the GM. A board of 12 Christian business and professional men had purchased & taken over the station in December, 1976.

I had been in Southern Illinois & 3 friends I'd known at SIU who lived in Illinois but near TH, each called me separately and told me about this 50 KW FM station in Terre Haute that had just been bought by Christian businessmen & whose format WAS GOING TO BE A BLEND OF CLEAN SECULAR MUSIC WITH A MIX OF CONTEMPORARY CHRISTIAN MUSIC. There would also be 60 second drop-ins, thought-starter type of spots about Jesus, not fire-n-brimstone. This type of approach to contemporary Christian radio was being tried around the country in the late '70s and early '80s. THIS WAS THE ONE & ONLY REASON WHY I APPLIED FOR A POSITION AT WVTS, TERRE HAUTE.

As Program Directors came & went I discovered that they weren't being told about the original intention for the station, hence the reason why the station was still playing songs with garbage lyrics and not playing any CCM. Finally in early 1980 I was made the WVTS Music Director & I immediately began weeding out songs with filthy lyrics and mixing in contemporary Christian music.

By late April/early May 1980 a couple of major advertisers were complaining about the "religious" music we were playing & I was told to pull it. I said that that was the only reason I was there & turned in my notice. In LESS than 2 weeks 3 people in Indy called me to tell me about "the station in Plainfield" that was being bought by WBRI & would become a CCM station. On May 26, 1980, I started as the new Program Director for WBRI and the soon-to-come Love 98 WXIR. Praise the Lord! That's my history with WVTS.

That mirrors my perception of the music during that period very well and caused me to listen elsewhere, even going to 92.7 in Brazil in desparation at times. :)

Did you know Herold Wesley?
yes i did, he was the PT WVTS engineer, his FT job was at WTWO, nice guy. my 1st radio job was 40 years ago May 5th. i worked my way through college working there on weekends. this was less than a year after the kulinski's lost their son jerry the stations founder in a plane crash. so much for the music they played back then, BUT it was RADIO and i was glad for the opportunity & Bill & Selma Kulinski were wonderful people who i will never forget. by the way they often spoke of their late son, i never checked this out but, they told me that Jerry had made the 1st automation system for radio and WVTS was a pioneer in Stereo FM Broadcasting.

by the way the call letters WVTS have gone to an AM News Talker in Charleston WV.

I knew Harold. He was the contract engineer for the station. He worked full-time for Channel 2. Great guy. I remember we once got knocked off the air during a thunderstorm & I called Harold. He told me to walk down to the TX building and told me how to turn on the transmitter again. Understand that the thunderstorm was still underway, complete with lightning. I unlocked the TX bldg door only to see that water had leaked under the doorway. I immediately decided that there was no way I was going to enter that building to turn on a 50 thousand watt transmitter that had a 500 foot tower sticking up in the air during a lightning storm! I called Harold back & told him I'd wait until the storm was over. (I was working the hoot owl shift at the time.)
