WMGM FIRINGS

anyone notice michael james hasn't been doing afternoons on the shark this week? word around town is they've fired him.

I think that's a reasonable question, Rob. It's a pretty big name at that station that got fired. Plus, they also got rid of the most popular weekend show they had with Breakfast W/The Beatles.

Actually they didn't get rid of the show... they just re-branded it and moved it to Kool98.3... really not a bad move... the Beatles fit on both stations, but probably more on Kool.... I heard the promo about it, 6am Sundays...

back in the area for the last several months and new to this forum, man so much has changed!

The Buzz??? what happened???????

The Shark....NIcky G gone and now, now michael james, one of the highest rated jocks in the market...this move does not make sense???????

In the radio world, ratings matter. When a pd underperforms, changes are made. And the numbers/demos show James was getting beat middays by a voicetracked (?) wzxl.

If they ever wanna work in rock radio again, they need to get better names.
Come on, "Nicky G" and "Michael James" belong on high school dance stations,
or maybe they could be hair dressers. Q: "Oh My God - who did your hair?"
A: "Yes isn't it fabulous, it was Michael James"

Do any of you REALLY know what went on at WMGM?????I have been viewing all of your comments and unless you were there you have NO CLUE.....

It's not important to anyone but the guy who got the axe.
The station has sounded better and better in the last few months,
so why hold it back with dead wood.

Z- that is because now you can hear it.........

Oh please, are we still blaming the transmitter?

it even sounded pretty good on cat country's antenna

when the number one station in town is 99.3 which is
only 3000 watts, you sure can't blame the transmitter
when you are at 20,000 watts.

Zackster, I guess that is a real "rock" name, and what station have you worked for and for how long?
First, to make fun of someones name or even their hair shows me a few things, you are either jealous, imature, uniformed or a combination of all three. Your comment is why I only read these posts in the past and never joined to discuss this area. As a long time local business owner I would read this forum from time to time since I use radio in my advertising, that said, I find your comments as I said uniformed, at the least. Now that is out of the way...

Ratings...Again, as a buisness owner, we watch ratings (as a part of our radio buy process). Only after the well documented fire that WMGM had a couple of years ago at their transmitter site, they have been up and down in power, on and off the air and only then did their the ratings begin to slip. That's when WZXL began to gain better ratings in this market, because they were gaining listeners due to signal problems for WMGM. Did you see the last ratings book??? We did, and WMGM beat WZXL hands down, the station did very well just like they did before the fire and their problems.
There are many reasons why ratings go up and down, but it's hard to keep listening to a station if you can't hear it when you punch it in on your dial. Yes, the stations sound a bit better (signal and music), but that started last November when the new transmitter went on line. Music started to change in the winter, hell before I left town for Florida (and yes, we buy radio down there to) I heard new Bruce, Bon Jovi, some early 90's and it was quite refreshing and looked like the WMGM had begun the process of what the station is now. What the new owners do not realize, is that the area business owners bought those stations for not only on ratings, but personalities, like Dave & Jerry, Nicky G, Michael James, Jackson T Chase. They brought people into our business. They fired Dave & Jerry once there, now brought them back, many people like them, not sure about the music they playing now but as I said in my original post...firing Michael James??? Does not make sense. The guy was well liked, very popular and very nice to our customers. I have heard the replacement and quite frankly now the whole day has no personality. Just speaking for us (actually a few other major businesses) we will not be buying WMGM any longer.

Sorry for the long reply, but in my business, we like to be informed before we sell something Zackster, maybe you should try it.
By the way, it's funny you never commented on the Buzz question I originally posted, but wait don't answer that, I would like someone who knows to answer. Thanks

99.3 used to get 20 and 30 shares in the younger demos with its old hip hop format. You probably could have received the same results with a 100 watt LPFM that only covered Pleasantville and Atlantic City.

Floridarocker: I concur with you on all points, personalities and their well known names are what advertisers look for to help sell their products. You are obviously en touch with reality. I will think twice before I place my advertising budget with this kind of operation.

Z- thanks for that 20,000 watt info. I thought even at 20,0000 watts I would have heard it traveling back up the expressway, I couldn't hear it at passing the AC Race Track.......

"firing Michael James??? Does not make sense. The guy was well liked..."

Liked?!? Your buisness customers maybe, but as far as working relationships go, that is FAR from the truth.

So "I Work In Radio"...I assume by your statement, you worked with him, if not you can not comment. That is what really bugs me I guess, that these forums become head hunts or bash sessions on people they do not know nor work with or for. I realize it's your right to do so but show some professionalism once in a while.

Furthermore, I am sure not everyone that I employ totally like me or each other for that matter. I would think that to be true at every job not just the radio business. Remember, it is a business, and with the economy the way it is and advertising dollars few and far between, again I will say (in my opinion) that this was a bad business decision. That is all I really said to begin all this talk.

What I do know is that the guy got the job done and did for many years at one station, that in itself says a lot about the guy. We used him for many years and will use him again if he works at another radio station in this market or any other market that we have a business.
Listen I did not log on here to defend Mr. James, all I asked is what happened to a few things while I was away from the area.
