WMRQ Uncensored

Hey Marc, was the "W" word in question "Whale"? (I kid!)

But really, what was the song? Was it Green Day's "Basket Case"?

I'm not sure what the W word is even. Is it "whore" or "wigger" or something else that I haven't thought of?

Yes Roger, the word was "whore".

Is that really a word that can get you in trouble with the FCC? Never thought of it as an obscenity, just as a crude, pejorative synonym for prostitute. More like "retard" or "bastard" than the well-known banned f, c, or s words -- and I don't think there's anything preventing anyone from using those words on the air.

I heard a girl with no radio experience loaded in all their music, she also still does their promotions. Listen for more mistakes too.

If it is used as a sexually explicit way, then yes, they can get in trouble with the FCC. If it happened during the safe harbor hours between 5a and 10p.

Retard has been censored before, Black Eyed Peas have two versions of one song, one is the LP version "Let's get retarded" the other is "Let's get it started".

Whore can be used on the radio (it's not in the Carlin list), but I think it's more of a preference thing on behalf of the programmer, Whodini used to have a song called "I'm a Ho" (or was that hoe?) and very few stations that played anything else from them would have not played that.

I was listening to WMRQ on the way home from Stop & Shop and they played a song and the "W" word was heard uncensored. I have heard this song on the radio not sure what station, but the "W" word is usually censored. Keep in mind this isn't a complaint, rather just an observation. Not sure what the song was.

It might have helped if you mentioned the artist and title instead of the supermarket you were at.

Must be the Everlast song they played at 10:56 AM that you're talking about... "What It's Like."

There's a story in one portion of the song about how a girl was abandoned by a guy after she, to put it in language MarcB can understand, got knocked up.

Anyway, at one point, the girl decides not to have the baby, so she enters an abortion clinic, and Everlast sings:

"And then she heads for the clinic and she gets some static walking through the door
They call her a killer and they call her a sinner and they call her a whore"

(Not sure who the "they" is that Everlast is singing about in the above line, by the way.)

But that must be the song you're complaining about, Marc... And a ten-year-old song, at that. Why the wait?

A previous poster referred to the "other" forbidden W-word - "wigger". The only popular song I know that has that word in the lyrics is Eminem's "The Way I Am" - another song well past its prime that I'm sure WMRQ plays semi-regularly. Better hope they don't play it the next time MarcB is driving to Price Chopper!

Dude, if you re-read my original post it says I'm not complaining that the word "whore" is uncensored and that it was just an observation that they were playing in uncensored because I've heard the song before (on other stations) and it has been censored.

Anti-abortion protesters outside the clinic, obviously.

I remember when the word a$$ could be said. But it tends to get edited out of pop and hip hop songs. But you will still hear that word not edited out in a Matchbox 20 song and a couple others.

I still hear "ass" uncensored all the time in songs like "Something in Your Mouth" and "Bad Girlfriend." The only time I've ever heard it censored was when Clear Channel owned 104.1 and ran it as WURH.

There was a song in the 90's that went along the lines of "you saw my blinker, bitch". And FLY out of Albany and BEC out of Pittsfield played the song as normal, but WSPK played the version with the 90's old school sensoring, where they take the word and edit it on top in reverse. So it would sound like "you saw my blinker, zzitchbi"
