wmuu has been teasing a major announcement regarding the future of the station tomorrow afternoon at 5 anybody heard anything
 
All I can think is a sale. That's a valuable signal and one of the last, if not the, of its kind. They aren't the type to hype something that isn't a big deal. I wonder if Clear Channel wants another signal?
 
That's interesting. If Cox wasn't planning to vacate the area, I'd say let 'em buy it and move X98.5 to a stronger signal. Only in my dreams...LOL...I should just be happy that X even exists.

I'll be anxious to see what they're doing. It's still owned by Bob Jones or one of the organizations affiliated with it, isn't it?
 
I am a Christian, however WMUU never has really been my cup of tea - it's too sleepy, too relaxing. But, I do listen every so often because they are so interestingly different - and though I'm not a huge fan, it's refreshing to hear a Christian station doing things a little different. Their slogan "unique" is certainly fitting. That said, I would be sad if they were sold and a secular format was launched. It will interesting to find out about their big announcement tomorrow. Maybe they're going Southern Gospel - I'd be elated.

i agree with carradio i think they are selling. the announcement says the bob jones iii will be in the studio. with cox leaving the market and if it is true that bju is selling their commercial license i wonder if a company like cumulus or beasley would combine those signals into one cluster. 94.5, 98.1, 107.3 and the translator stations. that would be a nice package with a good signal to play with.

i cant think of one university that owns a commercial signal like that or is programmed like that.

Bob Jones III is about as prominent as they have, so it's going to be something big. They'd probably continue online. I agree...I'm not as familiar with Beasley but could see Cumulus swinging a deal like that. This is the only market in SC that Cumulus isn't in, and it is also the biggest.
There is also EMF/K-Love/Air1, who is religious and has been buying stations up lately. Not sure if they'd join this crowded gospel market, though (89.3 and its translators, 91.1, 91.5, 96.7, 106.9). Hope not.

I can't think of a single station on any substantial commercial signal that is programmed like that. I guess they are to be commended for being different, but the station sounds stuck in the 1960s and seems out of touch with the 2012 audience except a niche following. An organization closely tied to BJU owns WMUU, awp69.
 
I finally got to actually hear the announcement after the news. If "....important information on the future of this radio station" spoken in that tone and president of the board of directors being present doesn't mean sale, I don't know what it could mean.

WMUU is an institution in Greenville radio. I've never been a listener, and wouldn't mind if it went away, but it's hard to imagine it not being here.
 
I guess we'll find out later today what's gonna happen with WMUU...
I sure hope for something new, surely anything else is a better use of the airwaves. :)
 
Well, I'm not a fan of BJU but I'm all for variety on the radio dial and by golly, WMUU contributes to that ideal. If it's sold and goes to CC or some other debt-straddled corporation, you can bet your bottom dollar it will be more of the same cookie-cutter radio we have too much of.
 
I wonder if they could be going listener-supported/non-commercial? No advertisers but take donations?

That's the most significant thing I can think of that doesn't involve selling the station.

WMUU is being sold to Salem. Bob Jones, III announced it yesterday on his Facebook page. He stated that Salem plans to do news/talk on the station.

Thanks for the link, Art. It is kind of a shame, though, because Salem syndicated talent is sort of 3rd rate, at best. Their stations tend to be very conservative, which WORD already is - I don't see being successful, but we'll see.

Yeah, was just looking at Salem's syndicated talk show hosts. Not very big names so just as I thought Cox was doomed if it put a talk station 98.5 (with more well known personalities even), I have similiar reservations for this. If they're planning on making money, it's going to be an uphill battle.

RadioInsight says that, assuming Salem puts their talkers on 94.5, they would give WORD and and WLFJ some notice before they will be pulling their programming.

Gallagher is really a tough one. Yeah, they'd lose a strong affiliate in WORD, but they would gain a decent draw to their new station. I would venture to guess that 660 is not long for this world in its current form. I think Glen Beck would do well in late mornings on WORD.

I never knew Salem had such connections with BJU.
 
Salem already owns WORD-FM in Pittsburgh PA on 101.5 FM.
I don't think they'd try it, but I wonder what'd happen if Salem swapped callsigns WMUU-FM with WORD-FM.
Talk Radio 94.5 WORD (legally WORD-FM) while 106.3 is WYRD.... :D
