WNEW-FM

A Rock station on 102.7 would be excellent, but this is the same company that abandoned it on 92.3. Highly unlikely that we'll get a good Rock or Alternative out of CBS anyway, given their reputation with the format. My prediction is that they'll stick it out and maybe, just maybe, one other station will pick up the format - how about WQCD? They were interesting when they had the "Chill" thing going on, but now they're nearly as boring as Lite-FM. Doesn't Emmis run a very popular Alternative station in Chicago? There's always a chance that WKTU will pick it up as well.

Why doesnt anyone see the abscence of a country station in NYC.At the peak of its run,'YNY got a 2 share, which is better than any CBS station is getting these days. And the following and the passion from the fans is better and more maketable for advertisers then any rock station.102.7 would be a great place for it. I just dont get it.........

Emmis doesn't have the magic bullet either, Q101 in Chicago is a non entity outside of mornings so not very popular.. Now with Mancow gone they cant be long for the format. They should have benefitted from ABC pulling the plug on their active rock station in Chicago for Scott Shannon's true oldies format but Q101 has not made any strides with them gone it's always been very vanilla and boring. Say what you like about Krock it was never completely vanilla althoughthe music may have been in some opinions.

On the contrary, I think that the absence of a country station has been the topic of many more threads on this and other radio message boards far more often than deserved, and the reasons why radio executives, rightly or wrongly, have not jumped on this format hole in NYC, have been rehashed to death. I think a better question is...why don't country fans see that bringing up the same discussion over and over and over again isn't going to bring country any closer to a radio home in NYC, and only serves to rehash redundant and tired arguments.

I have given up ..My Sirius radio provides me with country format that only a terrestrial fan can dream of...with no commercials. After 5 yrs with no country, watching CBS put 102.7 thru format after format with no end in site, then disabling CBS-FM with out warning made me realize that radio executives are just legends in their own minds.I have my country, loud and proud on satellite.

Really? So are these just digruntled country fans who aren't really listening to the progress of the current format at NEW? Unaware of the effects from the disaster just up the dial with a host who's name rhymes with poopie? If that's the case they should wake up and be praying that KTU puts itself out of it's misery quickly and provides a more meaningful spot on the dial. On the country note, there should still be country but perhaps the format needs to evolve into a more adult comtemporary hits country station. New York-tized! Even leave the country part off but still play it because there's a stigma about country in NYC, although I know it still has its fans.

As for KTU and providing a future spot for this new country format... perfect place. There is a black cloud over that station because of the hole they dug with recent changes and it is only a matter of time. Not that NEW is completely out of hot water but if what I hear is true and NEW is finally going to put some money into advertising themselves, then maybe, just maybe, they will be running up that mountain instead of walking. I also think they need to let loose they're very conservative feeling personalities. Sounds a bit restrained and safe. I don't think the listeners were exactly restrained and safe when these songs were first heard on the radio. I't s okay, Radio Execs, to come close to the FCC line: just because they've drawn a line doesn't mean it's really supposed to be there.

KTU could never bill half of what they do now with a country format. Even if they had a moble home a day give away.

Doesnt the end of KZLA in LA tell those begging for country in NY that it wont happen?. LA is an even more suburban market than New York, if they saw country as a losing scenario doesnt that spell it out once and for all for the people on the New York board yelling for country?>

and don't forget, the few people yelling for an fm country station in New York don't live in the 5 boroughs. Granted some may be within the market but the call for a money making country station would be Jersey and "maybe" Long Island but to put a full powered fm atop the ESB would be a financial dddoooooooooooooms day!

I think country is a great choice for the Jersey stations 98.3, 99.1 or 105.5. I don't know why none of them have done it, 99.1 could even go by "New York's Country Station" and get some Nashville dollars too.

How old are these geniuses with the financial advice about country in NY? 19? maybe 22? Country was not dropped from 103.5 because of finacial reasons,as a matter of fact they did extremely well, but the new 'KTU needed a home and that's where it ended up.If anyone knows any one who worked at 'YNY ask them how well it did and how the outcry was as bad as CBS fm or maybe worse. The problem is some kind of mental block with the suits, any country station in nyc would get a 3 share at least, better than any CBS station is getting now.Isnt the numbers whats its all about or is about some suit that thinks that just rednecks listen to country and he is afraid to bend......PITY... the Toby Keith show sold out in NJ.Chesney sold out in NYC,AND Tim and Faith sold out in the Garden. Not bad for a city with no country on the radio, guess they all have Satellite...Better get going time for me to jump start my pickup and powerwash my mobile home.

Didn't WYNY usually hover around a two share? Didn't KTU skyrocket to the top five or so in their first book after launching back in 1996? Isn't KTU, despite their recent decline, still one of the top billers in the country? Didn't previous country efforts in NYC (WHN, WKHK) meet a similar fate to WYNY?

Isn't it fairly easy to sell out a 20,000 seat venue in a metro area of 16 million, no matter what genre? Heck, relatively small ethnic groups have had concerts in the Garden and Continental Airlines Arena in NJ and have come close to filling it, but you don't hear much talk about a 24-7 Greek or Polish or Italian station full-time from the ESB. Just because 20,000 people in a population of 16+ million choose to go to a country music concert, doesn't mean that the audience is there to support a full-power station. Just because NYC is #1 in volume sales of country albums also doesn't mean anything, because the NYC metro is so much larger than even the second and third largest metro areas of LA and Chicago. I'd venture to guess that just about every genre of music has its largest volume album sales in NYC, just because of the sheer size of the population.

Didn't the owners of 103.5 also own Mix 105 back in '96 (correct me if I'm wrong)? Wasn't Mix 105 having its own problems? Why didn't they put KTU on Mix 105? Could it be perhaps because Mix, despite its troubles, was billing better than 'YNY? Even if I'm wrong about the ownership, wasn't Mix 105, as well as WNEW going through, more-or-less, format roulette back then? I think that was also around the time WPAT switched over from easy AC and 105.9 switched from ethnic leased programming to the first of their many spanish-language formats. Why didn't any of those stations grab the country format when WYNY dropped it, if, as you say, it was doing so well?

I am sure that country would get better 12+ numbers than Jack or Free FM, but what about the demographic breakdowns? That's what radio station owners and ad agencies look at, like it or not. I'm not defending it, but it's reality. What about billing? Poor as Free FM or Jack are doing, I'm sure that the billing isn't completely atrocious, especially with O&A now on Free and with low overhead on Jack. I'm not going to defend CBS Radio's management of their FM stations in NYC, because I believe there's a lot they could do that would be a big improvement over what's on the air now, but I doubt country would be an improvement.

Wasn't country even attempted on Long Island on 94.3 a few years back? Wasn't billing poor? Isn't billing better on that frequency with Island 94.3 and Hot AC despite the ratings being lower? I don't even think there's a question that there's some sort of an audience in areas like Long Island and NJ for country, but again, it comes down to billing and demographics. Who is listening? Who is advertising? A lot of AM stations in the suburbs are leasing out their programming because that's what they see as the most profitable business move. Even WLIB in the city chose gospel over country recently (we'll see how that pans out). WHLI has stuck to adult standards and does great in the LI book, but still does quite poorly in the ratings, and that's a format that's probably even more in danger than country. How many format flips have there been in NYC and on LI in the past five years alone? Gotta be more than a dozen...and no one's touched country. Even if CBS Radio is stupid...is everyone else too? CC? ABC Radio? Citadel? Barnstable? Jarad? Cumulus?

*end rant*
