WNOW FM

The South Carolina board has spent a few days talking about the future of WNOW in Gaffney which also has a city grade signal over Charlotte. The station is currently owned by the family estate and is currently under a monthly LMA and formatted Hispanic. Lots of speculation as to who will cut the deal to purchase the station. Any thoughts on who might step up to the plate and who could or would benefit?

Word on the street is Radio-One will make an announcement in the very near future.

Didn't Radio One announce last August that they were selling their Charlotte stations to Davis?

they did. can't understand why Radio One would come back, everything they did on 92.7 was lackluster at best, the Praise station seemed to do well though.

I don't think 92.7 could compete with V-101.9 or Power 98 due to its limited signal in part. WPZS has no competition, really.

I keep hearing WNOW called a Gaffney station, but it was moved in to the Charlotte market a long time ago. Why is that?

Gaffney Broadcasting owned and operated WAGI 105.3 until the owner & wife of the station died in 2005 & 2006 respectively.
Their will stated that 105.3 was to remain and serve the city of Gaffney. But DMG took over 105.3 in 2007
which left WAGI's programming on WEAC 1500 AM (now WZZQ) until 2009 when the 104.3 translator came online in the city of Gaffney.

If you ever come to Gaffney, 104.3 FM (W282AX) sounds virtually identical to the old 105.3 WAGI,
mostly country music with other local programming.

105.3 WNOW is still licensed to Gaffney according to all FCC records,
and Gaffney Broadcasting still owns 105.3, but it is under LMA to Davidson Media.

Yeah, that's what I've heard before. It makes sense, but I kept thinking the COL was moved in to Bessemer City for some reason. I remember the old WAGI used to play country and big band mixed together.

If they were to honor the wish to continue to serve Gaffney, then I doubt any large corporation is going to want it.

And this is how the heirs "circumvented" the wishes of the deceased owners. Lots of "Gaffney" on legal documentation - but only an hourly "on air" mention.

I remember when the COL was supposed to change to Bessemer City.
I believe it was only for purposes of the CP to move their transmitter to Dallas NC.
Once they moved they were able to keep the COL as Gaffney, since the new transmitter was still in Gaffney's city-grade contour.

BTW the old WAGI (now WZZQ) studio on Providence Rd in Gaffney still has "100,000 watt 105.3 WAGI-FM" on their building :D

The proposal to change COL was opposed by someone outside of radio who doesn't like FCC policy which allowed small town stations to move to larger markets. When the FCC once again allowed Longley Rice, alternative methods to demonstrate signal strength, WAGI was able to move to the Dallas NC Tower farm without a city of license (COL) change.
