WNOX RATINGS

The fall ratings are out and WNOX has fallen to 2.0 from a 3.3 in summer from 8.3 in the spring.
I know Rush is gone but a 2.0 for such a powerful FM station with a few local shows and many of the top national shows (Savage, Ingraham, Boortz ) is not a good sign.

What are they doing wrong ??

Running it as a low budget operation with no local news staff.

Captain Hindsight is enroute to Knoxville. I'm gonna make a big bowl of popcorn to see how this thread develops. Probably gonna wind up with a shiny new tinfoil hat before it's all said and done.

What Cueburned said. That's it. That and Rush. Well what Cueburned said, Rush, and Hallerin. And that's it. Just what Cueburned said, Rush, and Hallerin. And Phil. But that's it. What Cueburned said, Rush, Hallerin, and Phil. And that's the problem. Oh, yeah, and Hannity. What Cueburned said, Rush, Hallerin, Phil, and Hannity. The whole reason for the ratings slide. Of course, their sports show doesn't have the same access to UT sports that the Sports Animal does. That has to hurt them. So it's what Cueburned said, Rush, Hallerin, Phil, Hannity, and no UT sports. Yeah, that's it, just what Cueburned said, Rush, Hallerin, Phil, Hannity, no UT sports, and...

Where are all the naysayers from August? What a lot of good the "WNOX" call letters did this bunch. Best of luck to ALL parties on both sides of town, but the biggest laughingstocks are the clowns who said the new WNOX would take off and be golden

Yep, to read this board, WNOX would have a 10 rating by now, and WOKI would be dead and gone. Any of us that said otherwise were called "Citadel puppets" or worse.

I'll go ahead and say I told you so.

Keeping long term money on the guy who has the stick and the guy who has four decades of experience building dominant stations. They're up against a building full of good people. But those people are at the mercy of a company that doesn't know they exist and a very small number of smug back stabbing local empty suits.

Dang. I didn't want to take sides. Still like people at both places.

If he had gone country, he'd have at least double the number he has now. At least.

You guys got it all wrong,,, What he should have done was go Top 40 and compete with one station,,,, a format that is extremely hot right now and has a heritage on that frequency,,,, SHould have A<<<Brought back the WOKI calls to home,, and B,,, went with top 40 or oldies.

Country or True Oldies

Like people at both myself. I do think going Country or True Oldies would have been the smarter move for getting ratings. Talk is not a format I would want to build from scratch while getting a station on from a new location out of an LMA.

One thing is the gospel truth when it comes to radio in Knoxville and that one thing is Never..Ever count Johnny Pirkle out. Hide and watch, this thing ain't totally played out yet. The man owns what I would say is the best blowtorch signals in the southeast and it will turn out to be a player in some form whether it be talk or be taken back to a music format. The old saying is, "it's not over until the fat lady sings". Right now , she's planning her sheet music. She'll blow us away when the time comes.

Yep. Should have gone Country. I understand 98.7 has a 4.8. Considering all it's gone through, 4.8 is very respectable and for being relegated to a peanut whistle.

The other side of that coin: How long until a Citadel bean counter notices the 0.7 growth on 98.7 from spring and compares it to the increase in cost-of-overhead from True Oldies? Net loss between the two stations of 7.6. A $60,000 lease payment for seven share points is a bargain. Maintaining high salaries for seven tenths difference isn't.

Cowboy Citadel doesn't care as much as we think because News Talk bills higher than Oldies, with more avails, higher spots, and brokered time on weekends. Has anyone seen a rate sheet for 98-7, dont think the newstalk spot prices have gone down much at all

That's a very good point Cowboy. Lease payment aside, I have also wondered how much it takes to operate 98.7. I wonder where if anywhere they've been able to cut overhead. I was surprised with the number of salespeople they have. I sure would hate to be lower middle of the pack down if I was a salesperson there.

The thing about talk radio is and always has been programming. In music, people would have stayed with the bigger, better signal. But with talk, if you prefer HHH, you're not going to listen to Ed and the other guy on 100.3 because they're on a better signal. If you can't get HHH clearly and you don't like what 100.3 is running, you're going to find something else to listen to. Ditto for the other timeslots. The ratings are showing that people still prefer the programming on 98.7 and those that have stopped listening to it haven't just transferred their rating points over to 100.3.

Is it possible that Pirkle, despite the money, signal and experience, isn't the programming genius that he was 20 years ago? Sure looking that way. A music format on the 100.3 signal, whether it be country, top 40, AC, whatever, would have a better number than talk does now. I can't understand how the "experts" here didn't see this coming.

Personally, I hope they stay talk solely because they run the Westwood One NFL doubleheader on Sundays. If they would pick up their Sunday and Monday night games, I'd listen even more. Outside of that, I really have no use for regular talk radio at all. Their afternoon sports show is acceptable, but not overwhelming. It's no better than what 99.1 runs, and they have a much stronger slate of regular guests than Hooker does.

SalesBabes talk. Advertisers find out that they're paying above market rate and ask for lower prices or they move their money to cheaper stations. 98.7's new numbers are almost half what they were in the spring. The prices will either adjust or you'll start hearing a lot more PSA's. When there's money on the table, rate cards are more a starting point for negotiations. Especially these days.
