WNWV to flip to AAA "soon"

Apparently this is today public information. The staff found out Monday.

I'll miss them. But, the NAC/SJ format will stay on one of their HD channels & streaming on line.

AAA is a tough format to succeed at, especially for a new station. I predict they will fall to last place while WZAK will benefit and surge to #1.

The problem with AAA is that you have to give it time. Maybe they can do it since they're not a large corporate broadcaster needing to make a ton of money right away. I'm not sure they'll fall to last place, but they're probably going to be closer to last than first for several years.

WONE was classic rock/ AAA from 85-87, though they were heavy on the classic. They didn't give it enough time even though they had a cult-like following in Cleveland. The other issue is that the salespeople have to know HOW to sell an AAA format. If they don't know or understand their audience, it's going to fail. All that aside, it'll be great to have such a format in the Clevleland area!

They've had practice already with WLKR-FM in Norwalk over the past year, so it doesn't really surprise me at all. Perhaps it was groomed over there (in one of the unlikeliest areas that could support such as format... hell, Paul Harvey was a holdover from the previous soft AC format for several weeks!) as a means of replacing the smooth jazz format.

Here's the tentative lineup for Boom 107.3 come January 4:
5:30-10am: Mike Kessler
10am-2pm: Ravenna Miceli
2-7pm: Ric "Rocco" Bennett (also station PD)
7pm-12mid: Michelle Chase

The soon-to-be primary stream is already running at http://boom1073.northcoastnow.com/listen-live/. Already it's functional with liners and the TOH ID.

I remember WONE in those years, appreciating it a little but not a lot, most of the time wishing they'd be less classic and more alternative or at least AAA (though the AAA term wasn't really used back then, was it?). Not bad all in all.

I think 107.3 was playing mainstream CHR in those days as WBEA, right? The Wave came along shortly after that time if I recall correctly.

Prior to 1987, WBEA was focused towards Lorain County... first as a "beautiful music" station (ergo the "W-BEA" calls) and then as Top 40 as B-107.

WBEA flipped to an all-satellite hard-rock format as "Z-Rock" WCZR on January 1, 1987... then scooted to smooth jazz (well, then it was "new age" music) that same November at WNWV, "The Wave."

The thing to remember about WONE; during the mid-80's they were the only AOR in Northeast Ohio. 'MMS by then was true CHR. Kind of sad that the "Rock n' Roll" capital didn't have a rock station at the time playing new artists and breaking new music. The WONE from '85-87, under then PD Ward Holmes, did some of that. It was a fresh unique sound to Northeast Ohio which I still miss today. :(

they're still going to use michelle chase piped in from kansas city for evenings???! HAHAHAHA, they're really going the extra mile with that live and local, "not like corporate radio" approach for the airstaff. watch that budget ELBC!

The same case would be said if CBS Radio, Citahell or CC owned the station. (Personally, I'd like it if Bull or Pat the Producer got another go-around in evenings... idk why Michelle's still there.) But the days of a full-time, 24/7 staffing ended a long time ago.

Besides... this is STILL a major risk for them to take. At the worst, it could bomb like Z-Rock.

The online stream is the same as their current HD2 stream. In fact the HD2 stream lags behind the online stream by about 10 seconds. I like the format so far. Thanks for the link.

Same here. It sounds like CIDR/93.9 in Windsor... which is a very good thing. :)

the new format isn't terrible but it's nothing special either. I am hoping they mix in some indie-ish bands/groups or at least some bands that don't get a ton of airtime, similar to WOXY.com's format

So how exactly does one properly sell a AAA format?
I would inform potential advertisers the AAA audience is a dedicated one, they're not 'button pushers' and will keep tuned to the station all day- especially since it's the only game in town.
