WOGL Rebrands at Big 98.1

WOGL started to use jingles mostly only at the TOH about a year after they started the "Nobody Plays More '80s" branding. They started to use them a little more again late last year after Tim Herbster became PD, changed the imaging voice to Earl Mann, and added more late '80s/'90s rhythmic titles (including some pop-rap). But not too long after that, the jingles were dropped completely, along with said rhythmic titles.

I personally was never a big fan of the more modern style Reelworld jingles that Classic Hits stations have used in recent years, so I'm fine with them being dropped. I preferred the retro '80s JAM stuff, but apparently the Audacy Classic Hits execs REALLY dislike those.

I don't think there is a more odd pairing than KIIS 2007 jingles and 80s/90s music, which is what KOSF in San Francisco is doing (has done?). A strong contrast from CHRs in the 80s and 90s using JAM or TM.

Though the jingles for iHeart Premium Choice classic stations don't sound too bad.

Tuned in to hear the new jingles and my reaction was "Oh...okay". BIG 981 is, to me, now more akin to 94.7 The Drive in DC. Actually...it's a lot like The Drive now. Only with better ratings than they have down there.

Pretty much every major classic hits station uses ReelWorld, at least iHeart and Audacy. Same for AC’s it seems.

I streamed WOGL/Big 98.1 and can’t tell much difference. IMO almost all of the Audacy classic hits stations have close to identical playlists.

I personally (yes I’m in the minority) loved these jingles on WOGL - the K-Hits package re-sing.

Do you think Valerie Knight will go back to OGL as a DJ? Seems they’re keeping Coop, but canned the rest. I hope to hear her back on the radio? Even if it’s mid morning jockey or afternoons.

This is the new jingle or more like a sound blitz at the top of the hour.

I can’t see any reason they’d go that direction. Time to keep building a new identity. Not that the shows they dropped were detrimental to that, but it is detrimental to bring back someone more associated with the brand they’re trying to move past.

Somewhat related/somewhat unrelated: I happened to hear a TOH on B101 today. It felt like it went on for over a minute! If I were stuck in an office and had to sit through that nine times per day, I'd throw the radio (computer? table? phone?) out the window.

Studio plug…station +HD…Audacy plug…all that’s missing is the kitchen sink.
No kidding, it shouldn't be that hard to say "This is B101, WBEB-FM and WBEB HD1 Philadelphia (musical effect), an Audacy Station". And now back to more music, with more variety, B101". And, done. That should be about 8 seconds long. So, you don't really need to throw the sink at it the way they did, LOL.

However, @AbrahamJSimpson , I would rather that they go overboard on their ID instead of trying to rush it and hide at at :46 past, that's so frustrating.

Meh, I’ve never been bothered by buried IDs. I guess I’m not bothered by the long ones, more amused than anything. I’m reminded of how little kids first using PowerPoint tend to throw every effect in. It’s like the audio equivalent of that—gotta get the Audacy sounder. Gotta get a station sponsor. Gotta get the tagline. Gotta get the actual letters. Gotta get those fake voices (at least on Big today) of “listeners” saying how they love it.

All they need is an auditory version of Comic Sans font and they’re all set.

They could've just dropped the L and call it OG 98.1. "OG" is urban slang for "incredibly exceptional, authentic, or 'old-school.'"

Wow, dictionary.com. It's Original Generation. They totally whiffed that one. If you see a reference to the "OG Pixel" phone, that's the first release which was just called Pixel, without a number suffix.

Anyway OG 98.1 would have been a great name except it still sounds like Oldies which was the whole point.

Listened for about an hour. I didn’t notice anything different or unusual about the playlist and honestly unless you were listening for the jingles (which ordinary folks do not) I’m not convinced most of the audience is going to notice anything different. As someone else mentioned earlier, there are people who still call it Oldies 98. Last year it was on at work and one of my colleagues actually complained that they call themselves Oldies 98 but they don’t play any oldies. I smirked and nodded. After all, it’s been two decades. What could I say?
