WOGL's Top "1,000" - What A Gyp!

I've been sampling the "Top 1,000" countdown today, and to be fair, I'm actually impressed with some of the selections so far.

But what I don't appreciate is WOGL billing it as the "Top 1,000" but not playing every single song.

Case in point: After playing song No. 930, "One Toke Over The Line", Holliday said song No. 929 was from Tavares, and then went on to song No. 928. He also did the same thing earlier with a T-Rex song.

That's crazy. Back when CBS-FM in New York did the Top 500 every Thanksgiving weekend, they would always start at 1:01 PM on Thursday, and finish up in the 9 PM hour on Friday. Then you know what they would do? They'd turn it around, and play every single song again!

Granted, I know a majority of the songs on CBS' playlist at the time made it a little quicker to get through hours and hours of songs (i.e. many 50's and 60's songs were shorter compared to most 70's songs, which seem to be making up a bulk of WOGL's Top 1,000).

But don't bill something as the "Top 1,000" and skimp on a few selections. It ain't the "Top 1,000". At this rate, more like the "Top 840".

(But as noted, some of the "oh wow" selections on the countdown kinda make up for this. ;D )

Was driving back from CT today, so caught CBS-FM's "A-Z Countdown." I always find that CBS-FM goes a little deeper, a little older, and a little less Motown/black in their countdowns than does OGL. I heard 'Atlantis' by Donovan, followed shortly afterward by the Who's 'Baba O'Reilly". I doubt WOGL even owns those songs!

That said, I did enjoy the last (Mem day week) OGL 1000 song countdown. It's a nice break from their usual repetition!

One thing I like about CBS owned "oldies" stations is the playlist varies from market to market.

Some formats, such as smooth jazz, are consultant driven with the same songs in every market. But CBS varies their oldies to the tastes of each market. Motown is a larger component in Philadelphia, where not only WIBG and WFIL were factors, but so was WDAS-AM. NYC goes for the old sound of WABC and WMCA. WWRL, the WDAS-AM of NYC was not as much of a factor back in the day. As a long-time WABC fan, I go more toward WCBS-FM than WOGL.

You're right about that! KRTH is different from WOGL is different from WCBS-FM. I listened to Wibbage, WFIL, and WABC as a kid, along with all the top 40 clear channels, so my music tastes are all over the place. I currently find CBS-FM more in line with my tastes, but here in Ocean County, it's hard to listen in the car, whereas WOGL is always rock solid signal wise.

That's probably why these are the leading stations in the format nationwide. They play what their audiences tell them.

As to the occasional skipped song in the countdown...Casey Kasem did that all the time.they do it for time considerations. At least they are offering up something unique and different.

I've been trying to keep up w. this countdown, and I assume this is still the first run of it. Anyways, I will bet any amount of money that the number one song is "Hey Jude" .

Okay Goldie,

#1 was Let it Be...

at least you got the artist correct.

I'll take (use your best Dr. Evil voice here..) ONE MILLION DOLLARS.

Got to admit, WOGL's selections of songs to drop from playing ran the spectrum from things that normally are not in their rotation, to songs they play the heck out of. I think they dropped a top-20 Dianna Ross hit.
