WOKV moves to 104.5 FM...now what is next for 106.5 FM & the WFYV calls?

Never ever simucast a big signal AM with a big signal FM in the same market.
It wastes the AM and is ¢-less.
Transfer the AM to a foundation and get rid of the associated costs.

I don't think they want to move 106.1. It is doing good on the translator. They will probably put an easy/dove type of thing on it.

So when does Planet radio come back?

What would the point be to move Power to 106.5? 106.1 has almost the same coverage pattern at 250 watts and nearly 1,000 feet up in the air as 106.5 does with 6,000 watts and only over 300 feet up in the air. Basically 106.1 is doing well coverage wise as a translator that has a signal effect of a Class A stick....that is not a bad trade off to be honest.

I agree wth jpm3002 that 106.5 will be a Dove/Easy format. Here is a few things to think about. One WOKV will stay in the same studio they are in....the 104.5 studios will become home of whatever goes on next on 106.5....with technology these days a station doesn't have to move to a new studio to use its new frequency.

As far as ESPN on 690....forget about it!!!!! 1010 ain't letting that puppy go unless ESPN breaks the contract. NBC Sports or CBS Sports is still an option but what other formats could be put on AM that would be viable? Classic Country, Oldies (50s/60s)? At this point what do you do with 690? The only reason they leave 690 with WOKV is to get the listeners from Myrtle Beach/Charleston and Daytona or points further south.

All News!

I like it! This actually is more focused than one of my projections: that that AM could become a "B" station for the FM.

But does anyone know why 1600 The Beach aborted its split format (news 6a-4p, Richard Miller 4-6, and True Oldies elsewhere) after just a few weeks?

The AM being the home of the leftovers isn't all that uncommon. Cumulus does it with WAPI-AM/FM in Birmingham (the FM has the local hosts during prime listening times, the AM is all syndicated) and with WCOA-AM/FM in Pensacola. I don't think Cox does it with WSB in Atlanta, though.

All News....now that could work nicely. Great idea indeed! A third sports station would be overkill. Look at Orlando right now...they have four sports stations....that is MAJOR overkill.

TommyR: Not sure why 1600 The Beach abandoned ira split format. Richard Miller is not even on the station now as he took his show over to 1010XL.

Overkill? Atlanta has FIVE sports/talk stations: WQXI/790 The Zone, WCNN/680 The Fan, WFOM/1230 The Fan 2, WIFN/1340 The Fan 3 and WZGC-FM 92.9 The Game.

I like the idea of 690 becoming All News.

106.1 will move to 106.5 if Cox thinks that will produce the most billing.

If they follow their pattern in Orlando expect 690 to flip to ESPN in a few weeks.

I think that 1010 would have something to say about that......

cd

Cox took ESPN away from Genesis in Orlando. ESPN likes doing business with big companies who have multiple markets. ESPN would favor an outlet that clears Mike & Mike and Colin Cowherd. These contracts usually have a 90 or 120 day notice period where the network can dump an affiliate for a better one.

And if not, the new CBS and NBC sports networks are available, and CBS includes Jim Rome.

More like Genesis did not renew with ESPN when the announcement came of NBC Sports Radio launching. Cox had no involment taking ESPN away from them.

Agreed. The notion that OKV (former APE) couldn't monetize their signal in the 60's & 70's...and it's an issue now, is laughable.

WOKV-AM will remain the same for now; however, same as with WDBO-AM Orlando, Cox WILL place a viable format on the 50kw 690 signal to create another revenue source. All News makes perfect business sense since WOKV already has a well established news presence with the News-Talk format. It will be a relatively simple process utilizing Cox existing local news resources to incorporate said news content on AM 690 and expand said news content to 24/7/365 utilizing a combination of local news resources during key dayparts and utilizing national content with local newscasts inserted twice an hour along with local weather and other relevant progamming content during non-key dayparts, i. e., evenings, overnight and weekends.

I'm not sure I quite understand how you came to the conclusion that anything positive regarding AM 690 is laughable considering the success it had in the '60s and '70s as Top 40 WAPE and again in the '90s and today as WOKV. To think that nothing relevant, productive and profitable can be accomplished with that massive low dial position non-directional day signal is laughable.

The three most important considerations for an AM radio station are signal, signal, and signal.
I don't live in or near Jax, but I believe 690 is number one on all three, even at night.

ABSOLUTELY!!! Not only does AM 690 have the best AM signal in Jacksonville, it has the best AM signal in Florida and the Southeast!!!

WOKV-AM 690 coverd the eastside but I can barly hear WOKV here in Tallahassee depend on the weather. Like I said there singal patten most likeky show on the eastside toward the oecan.

You cannot hear WOKV-AM in Tallahassee at night because its night spattern throws everything East directly over Jacksonville proper from its night transmitter / tower site located West of Jacksonville in Baldwin. The reason for that particular pattern is because WOKV is required to protect AM 690 New Orleans.

When I was in Bermuda in 2005, I tried I think very hard to catch WOKV which I thought would be a snap. No sig on 690 in the day, and *if* I heard WOKV at all at night, the signal was "meh". I heard Coast to Coast AM on 690, which had to be WOKV; but it certainly didn't sound like the blowtorch I expected, the night pattern the way it is....Oh well!
