WOKV moves to 104.5 FM...now what is next for 106.5 FM & the WFYV calls?

How about 106.5 would be rock and rap (back in the day) when Jacksonville used to have a radio station called Channel X? on 101.5 before Clear Channel pick it up? back in 90's

I loved Channel X. Wow. Any station that would play Collective Soul "Shine", a sweeper, then Warren G/Nate Dogg "Regulate" got a great TSL out of me. I was in the minority, but I dug that dynamic big time.

Channel X was short-lived; but I agree, it was an awesome station.

Why did Channel X go away? I remember it when I was a teen and loved it...then bam, it was gone.

Channel X's demise was due to low ratings and low advertisng revenue.

In an un-PC world, the white advertisers thought the station sounded to black and vice-versa. It's too bad. Outside of sports radio, Channel X was always on in my car, at the house, etc.

I'm not saying Cox WILL or SHOULD put Smiley on, what we believe, will be the new "Hot 106.5". Especially if it was going the Urban route. Smiley is better fit for rhythmic stations. I was just pointing out that he does play music.

I was speaking as far as POWER 106.1, adding Rickey Smiley to mornings. They already air teasers about how old and corny Steve Harvey is on 93.3 The BEAT. Smiley is already on Cox Urban stations in Miami and Birmingham. All music and no radio jocks is great for the launch, but listeners will get tired of it(reminds me of failed Cox's 97.1 JAMZ here in ATL). HOT 106.5 going the Urban AC route won't have an syndicated Urban AC show since CC has both Joyner and Harvey already. Not familiar with Duval market, but are there any well know Urban jocks from the past still in town?

Here's my two cents concerning 106.5 going to Urban AC:

I do not know if Cox Radio will be able to overtake Clear Channel's "V101.5" because the playlist has improved over the past couple of years. Furthermore, they are adding more "New Jack Swing" era R&B and hip hop from the late 1980s and early 1990s in order to attract those listeners from ages 25 to 45, which is the most desirable sales demographic of any radio station. On the other hand, Cox Radio's Urban AC in the Central Florida market "Star 94.5" has become more limited in their playlist in the past couple of years. Like "V101.5", however, the station has also skewed younger by adding more hip hop and R&B from the 1980s and 1990s and less of the music from the 1970s and early 1980s like they had in previous years. In fact, in the early and mid 2000s, I thought 94.5 would beat 101.5 if both stations were competing head to head in the Jacksonville market because 94.5 had a deeper playlist than 101.5, which I thought had a limited, repetitive and predicable playlist in comparison to 94.5 at the time. Today, however, both stations have very similar playlists, which would make it difficult for Cox's new Urban AC station to make any significant reduction into the heritage 101.5's ratings and cume.

Life brings disappointment and setbacks. You can get negative or you can look for the positives about the experience. Perhaps for sanity’s sake, I’ll look at the bright side to all of this.

Over the last 6 months or so, the enthusiasm and the participation on this board for radio in Jax was such a welcome change. It was good to see. Where we probably all agree is radio is constantly changing. We can either agree or disagree with that direction. Remaining silent is not an option. I believe radio is worth fighting for. I’m confident all of you reading this feel the same way.

I enjoyed reading posts on the former Rock 104.5’s FB page. There was disappointment and setback there too but listener loyalty and love for their music ruled. I walked away from all of that convinced that radio is still a very personal medium. Perhaps management doesn’t feel that way but listeners still do.

Something very unique also happened. When The Dove came to Jacksonville, a good number of people who generally don’t participate much came forward. They loved what they were hearing. I was in that camp too. My best guess estimate is at least 6, maybe even 7 out of 10 songs featured were not heard anywhere else on the dial. That was such great news but as we know it was all very short-lived.

I don’t think this ever happened anywhere else where for the past 6 months, this board talked so much about the Soft AC format that it’s almost like we lost a format that never really even existed. That was pretty weird. Still, I loved the stories from a good number of radio professionals. Even some of these folks who considered themselves rockers believed there was a programming hole for an oldies based softer station.

It was also good seeing posts from those who I know are on the young side (under 40) who saw the merits of going into an AC direction as well. One really impressed me. He admitted to loving Classic Rock 94.1 but thought the former Soft AC probably deserved a lifeline to stick around. That was a very unselfish statement to make and I now see him in a very positive light.

OK, enough Pastor John stuff. When one thing changes in radio, often something else changes down the road. We went through lots of hype and speculation over the past several months. But really nothing changed. WOKV was around yesterday. They are certainly deserving to be around today. Urban AC existed yesterday. Now there are two bringing a total of 4 urban stations to Jacksonville. Radio is a funny business. Still, many of us are not laughing today.

I guess the next question might be, what will happen to the 690 frequency? I bet they change formats, as sister station WDBO/Orlando did with its AM 580 signal. WDBO-FM's signal is superior to WOKV-FM's, but any station that moves from muddy AM audio to clear FM is an improvement. I'd like to see AM go away altogether, wherever possible.
