WOKY Goes Classic Country

What puzzles me is that the format is "classic" Country. That would be the '50s/early '60s audience that left Top 40 in the mid '60s and went to Country. And that audience, for the most part, would be 55+, a demo that radio says it doesn't want.

I don't think classic country really ever works, even on FM, at least not after the first couple of books. Few if any country stations have ever been successful long-term without playing currents.

WRKA/Louisville is a classic country FM with outstanding ratings, although they have only had one book in the format so it might not work longterm.

As for WOKY. My guess is CC figured they can make the most of the frequency by selling it as a combo with WMIL. Or maybe it was a preemptive move to stop an FM country competitor from coming on with the WOLF name. Although I don't think the country share is currently large enough in Milwaukee to support two FM country stations.

Sad day...period. But reflective of today's reality. Another "legacy" station gone.

What reality? That just because it's a legacy means it should continue forever or that because a few dozen people like it, that it should continue?

I won't say WOKY was bad, because it wasnt... but good things can't last forever.

If you think oldies would do good, why don't you lease or buy a station yourself and see how it does?

Whoa, sir! I never said I thought oldies would do good. And "reflective of today's reality" simply means that in most cases the listener and/or advertiser demand for this type of format on terrestial radio no longer exists....which is fine with me.

My point was that its always sad to have to say goodbye to a legend...inevitable or otherwise...especially one that's been a part of the fabric of its community and associated so many "good times" back in its day.

"Good things can't last forever"? Depends on what "good thing" we're talking about. If we're talking about mainstays of pop culture, absolutely there always comes a time to move on.
