WOMX-ERICA LEE GONE?

I'm guessing that they're dumping the whole show; but strategically let Erica go; have a no compete for 6 months; meanwhile making Scott ride out the rest of his deal to avoid them teaming up somewhere else on the local dial. Shameful.

Who are the teenagers they have on Mix midday and PM drive? I swear they are gonna go top 40!
I think their HD2 is CHR AMP 105.1...they just move it on over to the main channel.

Didn't Rick program 106.7 when it was still WCAT?

Rick Stacey was prorgan director for WHLY-FM 106.7 "Y 106" before it became WCAT, but was there while it was WCAT and left sometime in the late 80s. I believe he started with WHLY in 1979.
Sorry for the delay in this post. I have had serious password problems and only got back onto this forum today.

Rick Stacey was never involved in WCAT. Also, while Stacey had been with Y-106 in 1979, he had left the station and worked a couple of other markets. He was working in Fresno immediately prior to rejoining WHLY. Here's how...

When Peter Starr purchased WHLY in the mid-80's, he brought in Jeff Cohen as programming consultant. Jeff brought me and Jimmy Steal on board as on air talent. It was Jimmy who recommended Rick Stacey.

The original morning show was Rick Stacey and I until Rick became Program Director a few weeks after we signed on. He moved to afternoon drive and the station tried bringing in a number of guys to host the morning show with me as a sidekick. All failed dismally. So I convinced Stacey to let me host the show and brought in Jeff as my partner.

A few years later, a new general manager thought salaries were too high, so slowly began disassembling the air staff. I was first to go and went across the street to BJ-105 (sort of like what may be happening with Scott & Erica). Then Jimmy quit in disgust. Jeff was fired and then Stacey was fired. This all happened in less than a year's time (actually about six months, if I remember correctly).

After that air staff was let go, the ratings for Y-106 plummeted. Rather than blame the personnel changes, they decided to blame the call letters. So WHLY briefly became WCAT.

Peter Starr, whose health was never very good, had been absent from the daily running of the station for some time. When he got wind of the change, he made them change it back to WHLY. Eventually, BJ-105 morphed into MIX and Doc & Johnny arrived at Y-106 and that began their long dominance as Orlando's #1 top 40 station.

bill

after you guys bolted, did WHLY/WCAT bring in Uglee Jerry and Ms. Uglee in the mornings? i didn't listen to the station but worked in media and knew about them and every sunday during football season i ran into the uglees - i thinks his the couples real last name was 'Losteau' - at a certain sports bar on lee Rd. They were huge saints fans and fun to hang with.

Did jim steal go on to work nights at Wdiz????

First, Jimmy came to Y-106 from DIZ. He did not return there. He left the market after he quit.

I'm not sure if Uglee Jerry & Mrs. Uglee were the first or second morning show that was brought in to go against us at BJ. I think they were the second.

I never really hung with them at all. They were kind of mad at us. They also thought they could "psyche" us out by calling us up during our air shift to brag about how they were going to beat us in the ratings.

Of course, that never happened and actually, Allen, Darrell and I used to laugh about their calls (this was before Carren joined us). I think we even put one of their calls on the air IIRC.

Ah, remember when there was actual compeition in radio? *sigh*

That was a very 'Uglee' time for that radio station. ;D
I do wish Erica the best.

While my area, Eastern Pasco County (NE of Tampa) is hardly where they target, Scott and Erica came across to me as a very veteran sounding, listenable duo that had chemistry. I would only catch segments or two here or there, but as a button-puncher, I found myself landing on their show more than any other.

Its not easy to find a male/female duo that pulls off a good show like they did, especially staying together over many years and I feel badly for both of them, and their many listeners.

I wish them both well.

I noticed MIX has a TV commercial now for Scott Mackenzie in the mornings, with the Best Mix ... mentioning a few artists. Sounds like they're pushing a more music oriented show possibly.

The Central Florida Radio site has more and there is an article in the Orlando Business Journal.

Orlando Business Journal article:

Two Points are innacurate in the Orlando Business Journal Report....THEY SAY...The AQH share is surveyed twice a year.WRONG! Orlando is measured Continuously Spring,Summer,Fall & Winter.

Point Two.....THEY SAY...WOMX was the only local CBS Radio-owned station to have a drop in listening shares for that period. CBS Radio also owns WOCL-FM Sunny 105.9 in DeLand and WJHM-FM 102 JAMZ in Orlando, where shares went up.WRONG AGAIN!!!!

FACT- All of the CBS ORLANDO Properties are in a free fall! WOMX fell 3.8 in Summer to 3.3 in Fall,WOCL fell from 3.4 in Summer to 2.7 in Fall and WJHM fell from 4.9 in the Summer to 4.4 in the Fall.

I wonder if Orl Bus Journal got their Info from a CBS Radio Press Release.

Double wow! Erica Lee gone and Rick Stacy coming back to Orlando after how many years?

Actually, the WCAT calls happened under Dennis Reese. Never understood what that was supposed to be all about. They changed 'em back before going AC and taking on the XXL calls. When Clear Channel bought 'em they flipped 'em back to CHR.

Would be interesting to see how a move to 100.3 would affect things for XL. Somebody mentioned that idea recently but can't remember who. Hell, if they reqally wanna have some fun, unpark the DIZ calls and call it Z100.

Did I miss something?

I was competing directly against 106.7 after I left that station and went across the street to BJ-105.

From the time they dropped the CAT identifier through the time they became XL, I could swear they were a Top 40 station. The really old Y-106 (from 1977 until Stacey took it CHR in the early 80's) was kind of an AC station, but 106.7 was CHR from the time Jeff & I did the morning show straight through Doc & Johnny on XL (Doc even let the old Breakfast Bunch sit in on XL one April Fool's Day and do the show like it was on BJ-105).

It was BJ that went AC when they switched to become MIX.

Hey Bill. Worked with you briefly at BJ-105 after a short stint at Y-106, both part time in between gigs.

Yes, in fact, when Y became XL, it was for a short time Hot AC, which was the main reason behind the moniker change to distance itself from the teen imaged Y-106. It morphed back into a CHR not long after, I believe when Clear Channel bought 'em.

Was always perplexed by this logic. Y-106 was AC for years and they kept the name and calls when if flipped to CHR in the early 80s. No one seemed to care then. Kinda dumb to flush all that heritage but I guess it all worked out in the end.

Well, we are far afield from Erica Lee at this point, but...

When Jeff Cohen brought all of us (Rick, Jimmy & me) into WHLY, we were really gung-ho to change the call letters to distance ourselves from the years of Bertie Higgins/Music Box Dancer crap that Y-106 had been spewing.

However, then GM Alan Rock fought us on it tooth and nail, claiming the station had built up tons of "good will" with advertisers (it hadn't). We were just happy someone was giving us a radio station to play with (the "smart" money thought we would fail miserably as we were one part timer from DIZ, two guys who were not active in radio, and Stacy was a guy who just came from the "huge" market of Fresno -also with no programming experience whatsoever).

So we dropped the battle to change the calls, kept it Y-106 (although we added the "Hot Rockin'" phrase), and still took the station from 13th place to #1 in a little over a year. It shows that it can be done - despite what consultants may have you believe.

Man, and the original AC Y-106 was a DOG of an AC, wasn't it?

Before Kaplow programmed it, the PD chair was occuipied by a dude by the name of TC Dooley. Remember "Y-106 Radio"? the "Radio" part of the moniker was conceived as a way to make the station sound "institutional".

Major credit to Rick for not being afraid to simply do the obvious. Programming CHR, especially in that era, was almost too easy. However, it did take some smarts to see just how huge the hole was for what Y-106 ended up doing. BJ105 was a major force in that town and had no direct competition for many moons. They got too conservative and frankly, lazy, and failed to respond to Y-106 proprly and protect their turf. It wasn't until Brian Thomas came to the rescue that BJ finally reclaimed its roots as orlando's CHR. Brian is another superb programmer and has guided CBS-FM New York to some impressive ratings. THAT station is hands down the best sounding, regardless of format, anywhere.

With regard to the rag-tag airstaff, some of the best radio ever heard arose from just that scenario. Every now and then you get lucky and end up with what looks like a diverse bunch who then morph into a cohesive unit. THAT was Y-106 in a nutshell. The right station at the right time and the right guy in charge with the balls to do it, and by a shear stroke of luck, the right airstaff.

Over the years, Rick has blossomed into a masterful programmer. I've had the pleasure and priviledge of working with him twice more after Y-106, and would eagerly do so again if asked.

Rick? you out there buddy? :)

WOMX-ERICA LEE 1 YEAR

If I am not mistaken, today is the one year mark of Erica's departure.

Has she/will she resurface anywhere soon? I live out of the market and can't keep up-to-date.

???
