While we're at it.....let's get Zeta 7 back on the air to battle WJRR.
Fat chance if any for that happening again, since both stations are CC stations. Only thing I could think of is WJRR staying as is, and 107.7 being retooled as "Zeta 7" as classic rock. Bet that would be the talk of town.

I would love to see a Orlando Arbitron from the mid 70's. My guess is Zeta 7 was only cuming about 20,000 or so a week given the size of the market in those days and the demo. However, it appears to have been a very LOYAL cume to have kept the memory alive --at least on this forum!

NO Flipping way.. You are definately on some kind of drugs.. I'm glad you said "Your guess" because you do not know...

Regardless, Zeta's reach at it's zenith was just a tiny fraction of the cume that WMGF reaches today.

Tx

Do the math. The market was around 280,000 in 1975 verses 1,519,700 today. 20,000 is a respectable cume for that size for a top 5 station. That is - if Zeta really did score in the top five. I would guess in those days, that WLOF, WDBO and WHOO and any other AM for that matter, was way out in front.

Think back. In those days, very few cars had FM and fewer still in the junkers I drove as a teenager. You were more likely to find an add-on 8-track player than a FM convertor in most cars in my high school parking lot. Many, especially the girls, were quite content with what was coming out of their stock AM radio in those days.;D

Tx

;D Thinking back, you may be right as I worked at an AM/FM and I had an 8track/FM add-on in my 65 Barracuda.. About the girls! That ain't all they were happy with back then! How times have changed!!! ;DBIG APE

Thanks for the info. Good to get it from someone credible.

Given that this is apparently true, Orlando is an even weirder market than I thought it was.

LOL :) WPOZ Is VERY well programmed, VERY local. Fantastic Weather and traffic. Always the best in the area when it comes to alerts or closings. They are reliable, and pretty much everyone had WPOZ on their dial when I lived down there. I still stream WPOZ now that I moved up north. It definitely blows away any other Christian Non-comm station in my opinion.

Note: I just realized, If Mix 105 flips to CHR, I suppose this means that Melbourne/Palm Bay Area will now have 3 CHR stations? 95.1 107.1 and 105.1 ... Geez, Now Thats a CHR war.

Live and local always wins. Most of the WPOZ braintrust came from the pre-Clear Channel Magic 107 as in Dean O'Neal, John Frost and Alan Mason. One must wonder if CC now realizes the talent they allowed to escaped from their grasp!

Speaking of live and local, I have to say of late that I have been very impressed with the live jocks on 105.9 and hope that CBS keeps it that way. In New York, CBS recently flipped WXRK "K-Rock" to CHR "92.3 Now" up against Clear Channel's monster Z100 --See: http://fybush.com/nerw.html Could Mix be in for the same rework as the new 105.1 Now?

Stay tuned!

Tx

as lame as xl 1067 sounds bring on amp 105.1!!!!!!
cheap channel has xl sounding tired and booooring........

leaves a nice gaping whole for a hot a\c to come right back in

Supposedly the reason "ampradio1051.com was registered by CBS for Orlando is because Cushman (Mix PD?) says they are considering bringing Amp to Mix's HD2. Cushman, told this to R/R, that he's actually thinking of of making the HD2 channel "All 80's"??? Umm isn't it already 80's?!? Mmmhmm

That AMP 97.1fm ad banner is still there..

Amp Radio is now officially the HD2 channel of Mix 105.1. I'm a bit disappointed as I was hoping to see Amp brought to the main channel, and give XL 106.7 a run for its money.

Wouldn't be at all suprised to see CBS move it over to 101.9...that station is hurting big time-18 in a row does not leave much room for paid advertising.

I think they play like 8 minutes worth of spots after 18-in-a-row. And 18-in-a-row during a mixshow really takes about 36 minutes to get into commercials.

Interesting that WPYO had the huge book and XL 1067 also had impressive numbers. Now how could a flip help WOMX? Might get a little crowded competing for that Top 40/Dance audience.

Just to set the record straight, Orlando in the mid 1970's was one of the Top Rock Radio markets in America. I programmed WORJ from 1972-1975. (Before the idiot, new owners changed its name to Zeta 7).
WORJ was not Zeta 7. As WORJ, we had dominate ratings in many key demos. After reading TX's analysis, I actually went through some old boxes in the basement and found an old ARB market Report for Spring 1973.
(6AM-MIDNITE, Mon-Sun) WORJ was #1 in Men 18-24 (31.4 share), #1 in Men 25-34 (18.8 share), #2 in Men 18+(12.4 share), #2 in Women 18-24(13.7 share) and #4 in all listeners 12+ with a 7.7 share. WORJ was a great Radio station with a large audience in a Great Rock Town. If I can find the ARB's from 1974 and 1975, it will show that the station had built on those 1973 numbers. WORJ only started it's downward move after the new owners bought it and changed a legendary station into something called ZETA 7. WORJ is remembered by all who were there as a pivotal Radio experience in their lives and the actual rating numbers prove those memories to be correct.
I'm sure WJRR or any station in Orlando would love to have a 7.7 share today.
Sorry, didn't mean to rant, but those days at WORJ were magical and I hate when there significance is lost in time. By the way that 7.7 share was the highest ranking by any Progressive Rock Station in America at that time. Something to be proud of Orlando. You were the Greatest Rock Market in America.

Lee Arnold

PS: Found a Ratings breakdown from ABC FM Spot Sales (WORJ's National Rep Firm) for Spring 1975.
WORJ was NUMBER ONE in Men 18-24, 18-34, 18-49 and 18+.
WORJ was NUMBER ONE in Women 18-24, 18-34 and 18-49.
WORJ was NUMBER ONE in Teens.
Orlando knew Great Radio when it heard it.

Judging by how well OLDIES have always done in Daytona...and even now WOCL does a lot better in Daytona than Orlando....with a good "Oldies" Format Black Crow could kick some butt if they flipped WVYB to Classic Hits.

who owns WVYB? great when they first came on, but now just kinda cookie cutter......where is the stick and do they reach into West Volusia or does WLOQ at 103.1 get in the way? This crowded FM dial with all of these lame low power FM's is a real drag. On a good day, at a the right location (somewhere on SR 44), it's probably possible to pick up:

102.9-WXXJ, Jacksonville-New Rock
103.1-WLOQ, Winter Park/Orlando-Smooth Jazz
103.3-WVYB, Daytona Beach-Top 40
103.5-WFUS, Tampa-Country
103.7-WRUF, Gainesville-Active Rock

This is crazy stuff...........

Publish it. I have it on good authority that WLOF was the undisputed king with WDBO, WHOO, WKIS and the rest of the AM's trailing behind.

Hey Tx

I think those are National Rep terms.
As for the book, it's in one of these damn boxes.
When I find it, I will post it.
WORJ was a Killer in it's prime.
