Wonder when whas will fill the 9 till noon shift???

F u kelly carls may u rot in u know where what a catastrophe how dare you pick someone that does not live in louisville i will never listen to that show again nor will i give her a chance u need to get fired mr carls you baffoon!!!You suck at what you do

Ultimately, phone calls and emails don't determine the success or failure of the decision. It will be what the ratings look like a year or two down the line.

If they're good, it was a brilliant decision. If they're bad, it was an awful one.

Can someone tell me the background on Kelly Carls and how he got control of the most powerful AM station in town? I'm just wondering how he got from point A to point B. Seems like years ago you would from time to time hear him filling in. I know his counterpart in Cincy, Darrell Parks, actually hosts a show on the weekends.

If Mainline and WLRS 105.1 have any brains, they would offer Joe Elliott anything to come and do full time talk on their station. Joe needs to leave WHAS once and for all. WHAS has screwed him enough. In my opinion, WHAS really dropped the ball this time. I'm sick of them!

You are correct, I do remember Carls filling in on days at a time. His "road" would be interesting to know.....

Kelly was PD of Sentry Broadcasting's 1330 WRRR in Rockford, IL in 1982 when they bought the FM I worked for, WYBR-FM 104.9. I worked with Kelly for about a month during that transition. (Now WNTA and WXRX)

He was a PD in Oklahoma City after that at some point, but I don't know which station.

By 1987 he had become the PD of KQFX in Austin, TX, a sister station to WRKA at the time. (It's now KHFI)

He came to Clear Channel Louisville as a program manager of some sort in 1988 or 89. He's been a PD for 28 years that I know of.

Did you guys really think he was going to let you pick his next talk show host?

To make a statement like that shows you don't know anything about Joe Elliott. He has been screwed over once by Kelly Carls. He wanted that show worse than anybody.

Have you spoke personally with Joe about this?

I wonder how many of these people kvetching about Elliot not getting the job listen to now, or would listen to, WHAS if Elliot was hired.

I also thought Kelly was at WLAC in Nashville when I was at TNN in '95-'97.

After being with the company for 20 years, going thru downsizing, yet still being a good soldier, are you telling me that Joe shouldn't have been offered the new position, especially when there's many in the public who want him to have the job?

Joe is a better talk show host than half the people on the air in Louisville. He's knowledgable on the area-- I bet he knows who coaches at Kentucky! Within minutes, he can be in contact with the people in the news.

As for picking the next host... well I am a customer using the service, and at one time that mattered. If you took a survey, I would day most people who listen to WHAS would prefer Joe in that position. To me it just seemed like good common sense, but I guess we will see how this new "controversial" host will be!

Simple answer-- yes-- and I told Carls this when I spoke to him. If you listened to his Sunday morning program you would hear his callers tell him even now that they miss him in the evenings. I will guarantee you Sunday morning there will be callers voicing their displeasure with this decision.

When I was in radio, it all came down to demographics. Do the people who campaigned for Joe Elliott match the demographic the station wants and/or needs to reach?

If they don't, chances are their opinions don't matter much.

We're not talking about turning bolts trucks at the Ford plant. We're talking about being an entertainer.

Jobs in this industry aren't given to "good soldiers" as a reward for lengthy service. By that criteria, Andy Rooney would have replaced Dan Rather.

Mainline is gonna spend as little as possible on 105.1. Its not like it makes much money to speak of but i still think it was a smart move to do something different on that frequency.

I do not think mr elliott would be wise to take a position at 105.1. Reason being i seriously doubt that station will stay talk down the road.It will for quite a while but not forever.

Kelly Carls became WHAS PD around 1997.

Joe Elliott mentioned a reason for cancellation concerned branding. His program was out of sync with the conservative talk show line up. The new host follows the brand of the other non-sports caller intensive program.

Add me to the list who wished Joe Elliott the 9-Noon shift and now disappointed

So what was Carls' position at WHAS/WAMZ prior to 1997? He was definitely there, and he wasn't the water boy. He might not have been PD, but he was somebody important.

The Joe Elliott statement you allude to makes sense. Francene wasn't conservative, and competing stations were attacking WHAS with conservative shows. (Laura Ingraham, Mike Gallagher.)

I'm a Rush fan, but Francene was too much mushy milquetoast for me. If I wanted talk in the morning, it was almost always one of the other two, though I'd always listen to Rush rather than Dennis Miller. I'm betting there are lots of 50 year old guys just like me and it was starting to have an effect.

And here's the thing about Joe: He's pretty much a centrist too. I like Joe, but that wouldn't have switched me off of Laura Ingraham.

I'm betting Mandy was chosen because of her conservative leanings.

Joe knows Kentuckiana. When he had his nighttime show, he regularly covered issues better than any other radio show, and the Courier Journal. Connell has already showed her ignorance about the area with ther Kentucky coach statement. With Elliott in the morning I would have been a regular listener. With Connell, I doubt it. I can't take the controversial political babble everytime I listen to the radio. I want radio that covers this area and deals with issues that matter in my life. Joe didn't tell you how you should think. He offered information and let you do the thinking. Connell seems to be more in line with John Ziegler, so for me, off goes the switch.

Ya Think? ;D

As far as Kelly Carls taking over as PD, I assumed it was around 1997. I believed he replaced Skip Essick, it's been a long time ago.

Actually, I'm surprised WHAS didn't swipe Glenn Beck from 105.1 and placed him 9-Noon. Of course, that might have been considered but Mr. Meiners' might have had a say in that decision.

Honestly, that's what I thought they were gonna do. I would have put money on it. Oh well, that's why I'm in engineering and not programming.

If I only had a dollar for every time I've said that...
